Wiesberger Pips Els By One At CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters

Jakarta, May 5 - Bernd Wiesberger of Austria sealed a dramatic win at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters with a five-under-par 67 to defeat a persistent Ernie Els of South Africa by one-shot on Sunday.

Wiesberger won his second title in Asia courtesy of some exquisite ball striking as he totaled 15-under-par 273 at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event which was staged at the majestic Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Roy Suryo – Minister of Youth and Sport (Right) during the Prize Giving Ceremony at Royale Jakarta Golf Club. Photo by Colin Dunjohn/IMPL

Els, the reigning Open Championship winner, settled for second place after carding 68 while overnight leader Daisuke Kataoka of Japan claimed third place with a round of 70 to finish on 275. Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand was a further three shots back in fourth after registering 69.

The towering Wiesberger, whose coach Philippe De Busschere is based at Cengkareng Golf Club in Indonesia, credited his acute iron play for his victory and dedicated the win to his grandfather who passed away a year ago.

“I was struggling in the beginning after my birdie on one. But at the turn I got a bit of momentum going because I was confident with my ball striking,” said Wiesberger, who finished seventh last year and went on to win in Korea.

He made the turn in 34 but tightened his grip on the third edition of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters with an eagle three on the 12th hole.

“It was good to hole the eagle and it was nice that Ernie (who also eagled the same hole) stayed in touch. He wouldn’t let go and that’s why he is such a great champion. It was a good time to do that and it got my round going,” he smiled.

Els, ranked 24th in the world, was one-over after five holes but put on a battling display with birdies on six and nine followed by an eagle three on 12 which he putted from 30 feet from the fringe. He birdied the last to finish sole second.

“I played and fought hard. I wasn’t quite at my best but had a good time. I didn’t hit my iron shots close enough especially at the start. I was one over through five holes and had to battle back all the time,” said Els.

“A win would have been unbelievable but second is not all that bad. This has given me something and it shows my game is going in the right direction. I’m starting to feel really good about my game.”

The South African tipped his hat to Wiesberger, who he played with in the opening two days and on the final round. “I think Bernd played better than all of us. I played with him for three rounds and I think he deserves to win.”

Kataoka, who has never led in a tournament before, felt nervous on the first tee but managed to pull-off his best performance since turning professional in 2007. His third place result matched his career’s best on the Asian Tour at the 2011 Taiwan Masters.

“I’m not disappointed with how I played this week. I played very well and hit a lot of good shots. When we teed off, I felt very nervous but I told myself not to be nervous and to try and concentrate on my game. I didn’t sleep very well last night!” he smiled.

He hopes the experience of playing with multiple Major champion Els will provide him with the impetus to lead him to a first victory on the region’s premier Tour which is celebrating its 10th season this year.

“I had a good experience this week. I led for the first time in a tournament and it was fantastic to play with Bernd Wiesberger and Ernie Els. If I can continue to keep up with this consistency then I think my first win will come very soon,” said the 24-year-old.

Andik Mauludin, Indonesia's lone representative in the final rounds, saw his game completely fall apart after making the cut. After a disappointing 80 yesterday, he carded an 81 in the final round, finishing 7 behind the rest of the field.

Pak Arwin Rasyid, President Director of CIMB Niaga was delighted with the third staging of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters as it has grown into Indonesia’s most prestigious golfing event.

"When CIMB Niaga became the title sponsor to the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters in 2012, we wanted to be part of an event that is the nation’s most prestigious. I stand here today proudly to say, we have achieved our goal. Thanks to the support of the other event partners and of course, you, the golfing fans, we see the end of yet another fantastic edition of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters. We have certainly seen golf at it’s finest over the past four days and Congratulations to Wiesberger for his spectacular win today. It was an exciting finish and you certainly earned yourself the title of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Master 2013!"

Jakarta Will Host Campus On The Green 2013

Campus On The Green, Asia's only knowledge conference for golf course superintendents by superintendents is on the cards for a terrific landmark event this year.

Campus On The Green 2013 will be hosted by the Indonesian Golf Course Superintendents Association (ASPGI) on November 3 – 5 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

"We are proud to host Campus On The Green in Indonesia and we are confident that this event will do a lot of good for all practicing superintendents throughout the region," said Rukadi, President of ASPGI.

In announcing the event, Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, the owner and producer of the conference said, "We are naturally elated with the news that the ASPGI has come on board as the host for this important ground-breaking conference. It is solid proof that there is a genuine need for quality education and training programmes for practicing superintendents in the region".

Campus On The Green will precede the 2013 Asia Pacific Golf Summit which will also be staged in Jakarta on November 5 – 7.

Commenting on the developments, James G. Prusa, Director, Golf Courses and Laboratory at Seoul's Sky72 Golf and Programme Director for Campus On The Green said, "This is validation indeed for all the good work that has been done over the past five years. I am really proud that the ASPGI has recognized the value of this event and is fully supporting this milestone event to the fullest."

A long-time veteran of Indonesian golf course agronomy, Brad Burgess, managing director of Sports Turf Solution was quick to chip in by declaring, "ASPGI is a very serious and dedicated organization committed to providing proper training and education for its members and its decision to work hand in hand with the Campus On the Green is indeed a very positive development and will go a long way towards further enhancing the development of superintendents in general throughout the region."

James Prusa has formed a special programme committee to draw up a content-rich conference that will be very specific in its communications objectives and it will be complemented by sessions that will be conducted on the field. "Cengkareng Golf Club is proud to be associated with Campus On the Green and we will be making special arrangements for delegates to attend hands-on field demonstrations on our golf course which will serve as a living laboratory for the superintendents," said Kurt Michelsen, general manager of the club.

GWI Portfolio Extends To Yogyakarta And Surabaya

Surabaya, 23 Oct. 2012 - Five golf courses and three hotels have joined the Golf Wonderful Indonesia cooperative, signaling the momentum and appeal of this new destination-marketing initiative and delivering on the promise of organizers to offer international golf holiday-makers premium stay-and-play options across the Archipelago.

Golf Wonderful Indonesia, a consortium of premium courses, hotels and lifestyle outlets, has gathered these tourism partners in order to assemble series of custom golf travel packages that leverage the country's unique standing as a golf destination. Those packages are available via the branded web portal, www.golfwonderfulindonesia.com, which also serves as a clearinghouse of information centered on golf and tourism activities in country.

In August, Golf Wonderful Indonesia launched the site and an initial set of packages, with Jakarta as a hub and starting point. Today it adds courses and hotels in and around the ancient city of Yogyakarta and the country's second city, Surabaya.

New golf course partners include:

* Taman Dayu Golf Club & Resort, in Surabaya, a stunning Jack Nicklaus design laid out at the foot of Mt. Welirang.

* Finna Golf, in Surabaya, designed by Australian legend Peter Thompson amid the lush, tropical highlands of East Java.

* Bukit Darmo Golf, another sterling Nicklaus effort, located just 10 minutes from Surabaya's city center.

* Merapi Golf & Mountain Resort, in Yogyakarta, designed by Thompson some 800 meters above sea level and ringed by volcanic peaks.

* Borobudur International Golf & Country Club, in Yogyakarta, laid out by Douglas Duncanson next door to the famed 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument for which the club is named.

New Golf Wonderful hotel partners include:

* The Majapahit Hotel Surabaya, an historic 5-star property founded in 1910 by the Sarkies family, whose collection of grand hotels included Raffles in Singapore, The Strand in Rangoon, and The Eastern & Oriental in Penang.

* The Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta, an elegant 5-star property set amid 24 hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens on the outskirts of the city, the cultural heart of Java.

* The JW Marriott Surabaya, a gleamingly modern, 5-star high-rise whose 25 floors look out upon the city's most fashionable shopping district.

Golf tour packages to Surabaya and Yogyakarta, incorporating the new Golf Wonderful properties above, will be released by the end of October and posted at www.golfwonderfulindonesia.com, according to Harmony Le Riche, president director of PT Panorama Wisata Nusantara, the tour operator managing all in-bound traffic for Golf Wonderful Indonesia.

"Our efforts here differ from those of typical destination marketing and golf tour-packaging efforts in that the golf courses are already here -- some 170 of them -- and golf aficionados acknowledge the cream of the crop to be among the best resort tracks in Asia-Pacific," said Le Riche.

"Golf Wonderful is determined to bring in the pick of that litter as course partners, and this new group of courses in Yogyakarta and Surabaya certainly meet that high standard. Interest from top courses and hotels -- in the 4- and 5-star categories -- has been exceptionally high. We expect to announce partnerships by the start of 2013 that enable golfers to choose and customize itineraries from combinations of courses and hotels in Jakarta, Bogor, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Bali."

Le Riche noted the Golf Wonderful Indonesia (GWI) brand clearly displays the strong support and partnership it enjoys from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, whose overarching slogan is "Wonderful Indonesia". National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is another GWI partner - the airline is now flying golf clubs free of charge.

That said, privately owned entities form the remainder of consortium membership, which also includes restaurants (for example, Negev, Jakarta's hottest new bistro) and golf teaching facilities (the Leadbetter Golf Academy at Cengkareng Golf Club).

Tour operator PT Panorama Wisata Nusantara has secured from all of its partners special rates enabling remarkably affordable and flexible packages available only through Golf Wonderful Indonesia.

"It's important that golfers and our fellow tour operators and travel agents understand how this works," said Le Riche. "We have secured exclusive rates with our partner courses and hotels, enabling extremely affordable packages that we intend to sell directly to golfers through golfwonderfulindonesia.com. That said, we fully expect and welcome international tour operators and travel agents to partner with us in the selling of these packages, as well, because PT Panorama Wisata Nusantara will handle all logistics on the ground here in Jakarta and across Indonesia.

"We can guarantee the quality of the Golf Wonderful Indonesia experience, the reliability of our transport, our logistics and local knowledge. But flexibility is also paramount. That's why we've provided a range of hotel partners to suit the budgets of various traveling golfers. We also recognize there is life outside golf -- we're eager to customize packages to enable golfing tourists the chance to experience all that Indonesia has to offer, from Jakarta to East Java, from Yogyakarta to Bali."

The website, www.golfwonderfulindonesia.com, is not merely the definitive source of information on golf in Indonesia. It is complemented by interactive media components including the Golf Wonderful Blog (recent items include a court victory ensuring that taxes burdens on Indonesian golf courses -- and resulting green fees -- will remain low), the GWI Facebook page (www.facebook.com/golfwonderfulindonesia) and Twitter account (follow GWI @golfwonderful).

Golf Wonderful Indonesia Launches New Web Portal

Jakarta, 28 July 2012 - Golf Wonderful Indonesia, a consortium of premium courses, hotels and lifestyle outlets, has today thrown open the doors to discerning golfers across Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America with a series of golf travel packages that leverage the country’s unique standing as a golf destination.

The branded web portal, www.golfwonderfulindonesia.com, also launches today with a wealth of information, and packages, centered on golf and holiday-making across the Indonesian archipelago, with Jakarta as a hub and starting point.

“Golf Wonderful Indonesia is indeed unique because, contrary to the way many golf destinations are formed and administered, we happily have it backwards,” said Harmony Le Riche, President Director of PT Panorama Wisata Nusantara, the tour operator managing all in-bound traffic for Golf Wonderful Indonesia.

“Most regions claim the ‘golf destination’ mantle before there are truly enough quality courses, enough worthy hotels and off-course entertainment options to make that claim ring true. Indonesia, on the other hand, already boasts dozens of the finest golf courses in Asia-Pacific, most of them clustered together in established hubs like Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Bogor and Bali. Indonesia has never really focused on golf-specific promotion and packaging; it has been a well kept secret.

“But now the secret is out, with the launch of Golf Wonderful Indonesia. We are ready to share with the world how travel here is affordable, practical and integral to everything else the country has to offer on the tourism front.”

Le Riche noted the Golf Wonderful Indonesia brand clearly displays the strong support and partnership it enjoys from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, whose overarching slogan is “Wonderful Indonesia”. National flag carrier and airline Garuda Indonesia is another partner, but privately owned entities form the remainder of consortium membership which, for now, centers on Jakarta, home to a surfeit of top-shelf courses and accommodations. According to Le Riche, additional courses, hotels and corresponding packages will be added across the country in the coming months.

Golf Wonderful Indonesia today includes the following golf course partners:
  • Cengkareng Golf Club, a Walter Raleigh Stewart-designed 18 that has played host to multiple Indonesian Opens, co-sanctioned by the European PGA Tour
  • Royale Jakarta Golf Club, the 27-hole JMP Design and site of the Asian Tour’s CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters, presented by PNTS, through 2013
  • Emeralda Golf Club, whose 27 holes -- designed by none other than Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus -- have hosted the Dunhill Asian Masters and the Volvo Masters Asia.
  • Jababeka Golf & Country Club, a sterling 18 from the hand of 6-time major champion Nick Faldo that has earned the undying loyalty of Jakarta’s golf-savvy set.

The Golf Wonderful Indonesia consortium also includes four hotel partners, three in the 5-star realm -- The Hotel Mulia Senayan, The Park Lane Jakarta and Four Seasons Jakarta -- and another in the 4-star category: The Aston Rasuna.

Tour operator PT Panorama Wisata Nusantara has secured from all of its partners special rates enabling remarkably affordable and flexible packages available only through Golf Wonderful Indonesia.

“It’s important that golfers and our fellow tour operators and travel agents understand how this works,” said Le Riche. “We have secured exclusive rates with our partner courses and hotels, enabling extremely affordable packages that we intend to sell directly to golfers through golfwonderfulindonesia.com. That said, we fully expect international tour operators and travel agents to partner with us in the selling of these packages, as well, because PT Panorama Wisata Nusantara will handle all logistics on the ground here in Jakarta and across Indonesia.

That’s why we’ve provided a range of hotel partners to suit the budgets of various traveling golfers. We also recognize there is life outside golf -- we’re eager to customize packages to enable golfing tourists the chance to experience all that Indonesia has to offer, from Jakarta to Jawa Timur, from Yogyakarta to Bali.”

The new website, www.golfwonderfulindonesia.com, is not merely the definitive source of information on golf in Indonesia. It is complemented by interactive media components including the Golf Wonderful Blog (wherein Arjuna Wayang has just been introduced as GWI’s official mascot and enlightened warrior king); the GWI Facebook page (www.facebook.com/golfwonderfulindonesia); and Twitter account (follow GWI @golfwonderful).

Constitutional Court Rules Golf A Sport

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday approved a judicial review by the Indonesian Golf Association and several golf companies, stating that entertainment tax levied against the golf industry is unconstitutional.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday approved a judicial review by the Indonesian Golf Association and several golf companies, stating that entertainment tax levied against the golf industry is unconstitutional.

Golf in Indonesia will now be legally classified as a sport, and subject to a different (and likely lower) realm of taxation.

“The word ‘golf’ in the Law on Regional and Retribution Tax is against the 1945 Constitution, and therefore no longer legally binding,” presiding judge Ahmad Sodiki said, as quoted by Antara.

Under the old law, golf was categorized as entertainment, and subject to similar taxes as karaoke, nightclubs, billiards, bowling, massage parlors and art performances.

The golf association and several companies complained that categorizing golf as entertainment resulted in an unfairly high taxation rate of up to 35 percent, with different regions given the discretion to set the rate at or below that number.

“Tax charges should consider all aspects, including the type of the business or event that could be subject to tax, as well as the justice . . . for tax payers,” judge Akil Mochtar said. He said that the classifying golf as a sport seemed more suitable, given that there were numerous national and international tournaments, and because people played golf for health and recreation purposes.

“Therefore, golf could not be categorized only as entertainment, and cannot be an object of entertainment taxes,” Akil said.

But one of the nine Constitutional Court judges dissented — justice Achmad Sodiki said that golf is indeed entertainment that happens to contain elements of a sport.

“Golf can not be seen as black and white,” Achmad said. “Many people like golf as entertainment for weekend recreation. [Golf] also makes efforts to lift up it’s image and enter certain respected social economic segments. It is also a communication media for friendship and business among elite people.”

Interested companies in the judicial review included Pondok Indah Padang Golf, Sentul Highlands Golf Club, Cengkareng Golf Club, Palm Hill Golf Course, New Kuta Golf and Ocean View, Merapi Golf, Karawang International Golf Course and Damai Indah Golf.

The Golf Club Experience... Has It Gone AWOL?

Club management and the delivery of the club experience will come under scrutiny at the 2012 Asia Pacific Golf Summit to be held in the oil-rich Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam on December 11-13.

This is an issue that has been widely talked about, discussed and hotly debated by patrons of golf clubs and club owners and operational personnel. If one is to look back over the years, the so-called "glory days" of golf in Asia, quality of service was of paramount importance. The delivery of service was also a matter that many golf clubs took great pride in. However, based on feedback, these once hallowed standards of service seem to have been in a state of decline. It must be pointed out though that there are still many golf clubs in Asia who strive for very high standards, although there are many who don't share these same ideals.

In an environment where efforts are on-going to grow the game of golf, how important is service and its role in delivering the club experience?

This matter will be cross-examined by a high-powered panel of experts led by Kurt Michelsen, General Manager of Cengkareng Golf Club and the former Asia Pacific Vice President for Troon Golf.

The panel will be made up of:
RISHI NARAIN – Managing Director, Rishi Narain Golf Management (India)
PETER DOWNIE – General Manager, Sentosa Golf Club (Singapore)
NEIL COULSON – Director of Operations, IMG Golf Course Services (China)
CLIVE CARPENTER – Managing Director, Golf Today Network (London)

"We are asking some very pointed questions of the industry. By and large, the club spirit, experience and camaraderie that golf was once known to uphold seems to be in a state of decline especially in clubs in Asia," explained Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, owner and product of the Summit.

If you are a golf club owner, operator, general manager or a business executive involved in growing the club experience, make sure that you block out the dates now! December 11 - 13, 2012.

The Sultanate of Brunei will roll out the red carpet to welcome you to a truly peaceful abode!
