Jakarta, May 5 = The Indonesia PGA Championship will showcase the leading players from OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO) when it returns to the award-winning Damai Indah Golf – Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) this year.
The tournament, which was inaugurated with great success in 2011, will be jointly sanctioned by OneAsia and the JGTO for the third successive year and form part of an exciting swing on both circuits.
Damai Indah Golf – BSD Course, which boasts the first Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Indonesia, will host the tournament from July 30 to August 2.
Japan’s Michio Matsumura birdied the last three holes to win the Indonesia PGA Championship March last year. The 31-year-old posted rounds of 65, 67, 67 and 68 to finish 21-under-par and claim the US$180,000 first prize.
“This will be the fourth staging of the Indonesia PGA Championship under the OneAsia banner and we have seen it grow in stature during that time,” said Johannes Dermawan, Chairman of the PGA Tour of Indonesia.
“We witnessed a thrilling finish last year involving players from Japan, Australia, the Philippines and China reflecting the cosmopolitan makeup of the field. The Indonesia PGA Championship also affords several local players the opportunity to test themselves against Australasia’s finest and gives fans the chance to see top-quality golf.”
OneAsia Commissioner and Chairman Sung Y. Chun said that the partnership with the JGTO had borne fruit at the Indonesia PGA Championship.
“The presence of leading players from the JGTO at the Indonesia PGA Championship has taken the tournament to a new level and bred a healthy rivalry with our members,” he said.
“I am confident that the Indonesia PGA Championship will once again play an important role in the OneAsia season.”
Damai Indah Golf, the brainchild of well-known Indonesian real estate developer and business baron, Ir. Ciputra, consists of two international championship courses in completely different and challenging surroundings: BSD Course, located in the West Java satellite city of BSD; and PIK Course, located along the Java Sea in North Jakarta.
Among Jakarta golfers the BSD Course is commonly referred to as BSD. It is situated alongside the impressive Cisadane River that is back-dropped by the up-market housing estates of Bumi Serpong Damai.
Korean Choi Ho-sung drained an eight-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a two-stroke victory in the Indonesian PGA Championship at Emeralda Golf Club in 2013.
And in 2011, Australian Andre Stolz beat Indonesian number one Rory Hie by one shot at Imperial Klub Golf.

OneAsia Set For Lucrative Seventh Season
January 17 - The OneAsia schedule in 2015 will feature at least 10 events boasting overall prize money of nearly US$12 million and a strong line up of tournaments across the Asia-Pacific region.
The multi-million dollar circuit, which is now in its seventh year of excellence, sees two Final Stage Qualifying Schools take place in January and February in the United States and Malaysia respectively, before the first event of the year, the Volvo China Open tees off from April 23 to 26.
China’s national Open is the perfect curtain raiser for the season as it offers prize money of RMB20,000,000 (approx US$3.23 million) and is jointly sanctioned with the European Tour.
Korea’s top three golf tournaments the GS Caltex Maekyung Open (May 14 - 17), the Kolon Korea Open (September 10 - 13), and the SK Telecom Open (date tbc) will once again help form a strong back bone to the schedule.
Mid-way through the year OneAsia will also take a popular swing through Southeast Asia for the Thailand Open (June 11 – 14) and the Indonesia PGA Championship (July 30 – August 2). Both events will be jointly-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).
The Nanshan China Masters (September 24 -27), which since its launch in 2011 is quickly becoming one of the most prestigious events on the mainland, returns to the calendar as does the Fiji International (October 15 - 18), which was inaugurated with great success last year.
As per last year the season will culminate Down Under with the Emirates Australian Open (November 26 - 29) and the Australian PGA Championship, the dates for which will be confirmed later.
The Dongfeng Nissan Cup, a Ryder Cup-style match between China and Asia Pacific, will also help bring the year to an exciting conclusion.
“OneAsia will once again offer a multi-million dollar circuit featuring many of the most prestigious events in our region,” said OneAsia Commissioner and Chairman Sang Y. Chun.
We are also working hard to add more events to OneAsia for this season and the years ahead. We currently boast a solid schedule that has huge potential to accomplish our mission of creating a Tour that will allow players from Asia-Pacific to go on to become world beaters.”
This year players will attempt to match Kim Seung-hyuk’s majestic 2014 when he claimed the OneAsia Order of Merit title with earnings of US$501,990.
He marched to victory in two events on home soil, the SK Telecom Open in May and the Kolon Korea Open in October.
OneAsia was founded in 2009 by the China Golf Association, the Korea Golf Tour, the Korea Golf Association and the PGA of Australia and is the first ever circuit in the region that covers the whole of the Asia-Pacific rim.

New Indonesian Golf Tour For Pros And Amateurs Launched
Jakarta, April 1st 2014 - Today the third leg of a brand new golf tour will get underway at Emeralda Golf Club, just south of Jakarta.
For the first time Indonesia has its own professional golf tour, the Indonesian Golf Tour. It is an ambitious new professional golf circuit aimed at speeding the development of Indonesia’s up and coming golfers.
The playing field will comprise of 80 Indonesian Golf Professionals, 30 Male Amateurs, 20 Female Amateurs and 14 special invites marking the first time Indonesia has seen such a tour that allows for a playing field offering opportunities to both Amateurs and Golf Professionals at the same time.
A total of thirteen 3-day events will be hosted at selected courses in the greater Jakarta area with each boasting IDR 200,000,000 prize purses. All 13 events will earn ranking points for the participating golf professionals, which will set the stage for the Road to the Indonesian Golf Championship to be hosted at Jakarta Golf Club (Rawamangun) from December 10th – 13th this year.
The top 30 golf professionals and top 10 amateurs will play for the grand prize purse of IDR 500,000,000 with all golf professionals guaranteed winnings in the 4-day tournament as well as the three top professional securing themselves a country exemption spot on the Asian Development Tour for the 2015 season.
As a result of this new initiative for professional and amateur golf in Indonesia, close to 10 amateurs have converted their status to professional status in order to allow them to play for money on the Indonesian Golf Tour.
The Indonesia Golf Tour was officially launched on March 21st during a Press Conference in Jakarta, but two events, the PGP Classic at Senayan National Golf Club and the Indonesia Golf Challenge at Palm Hill Golf Club, were already held prior to this launch.
"The long term future for golf in Indonesia is not paying large sums to bring the world's superstars to play here but creating our own stars," Johannes Dermawan, the chairman of Professional Golf Tour Indonesia (PGTI) said at the launch event.
"We need to create more stars that we ourselves can be proud of, stars that the Indonesian people will flock to see and stars that will eventually play among the world's top golfers in the world's top tournaments. But we can only achieve this by giving our best and most promising golfers the opportunity to develop their competitive skills, by giving them the chance to compete regularly." added Dermawan.
Indonesian Golf Star, Rory Hie added, “The Road to the Indonesian Golf Championship will create a buzz factor on the Indonesian Golf Tour as players compete throughout the season to make it into the field for the final event. We thank the tournament organizers for supporting this positive development.”
During the Press Conference, Professional golfers from across the country were presented with the vision and objectives of The Indonesian Golf Tour and were encouraged to use its platform as a unique opportunity to improve their fortunes.
The launch was blessed with the presence of representatives from Persatuan Golf Indonesia (Indonesian Golf Association) and Badan Professional Olahraga Indonesia (Professional Sports Association of Indonesia) as well as many of Indonesia’s leading golf professionals, all of whom echoed the sentiments expressed above.
The Indonesian Golf Tour series brings the total number of Professional Golf events being hosted in Indonesia to 20 events, including 2 Asian Tour events (CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters and Indonesia Open), 1 OneAsia event (Indonesian PGA Championship), 2 Asian Development Tour events (Linc Group Jakarta Classic and Linc Group Jakarta Invitational) and the Camry Invitational.
This is the first time Indonesia has seen so many professional golf events being hosted in a single year.

Thrilling Showdown On Final Day Of The Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, March 30 - Japan’s Michio Matsumura birdied the last three holes to snatch victory by a shot on Sunday in a rain-interrupted final round of U.S. $1 million Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
The 31-year-old had rounds of 65, 67, 67 and 68 to finish 21 under par around Damai Indah Golf’s 6,545-metre (7,160-yard) Bumi Serpong Damai course to claim the $180,000 first prize at a tournament co-sanctioned by OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour.
Australian Rhein Gibson (62) and Filipino Juvic Pagunsan (69) shared second place, while China’s Wu Ashun (69) was alone in fourth.
Matsumura trailed overnight leader Park Sang-hyun by a shot going into the final round and looked to have blown his chance after starting with a bogey and then doubling the sixth. But six birdies on a blistering back nine -- none better than on the 17th when he drained a 24-footer -- saw him home.
A three-time winner previously on the Japan Tour, Matsumura said he was delighted to win abroad for the first time.
“It has been my dream since I became a professional to win a tournament outside Japan,” he said. “It is a great honor to win this title at such a beautiful course.”
Gibson had set the pace much earlier in day with a scorching 62 that equaled the course record set by Gaganjeet Bhullar in 2007.
The 28-year-old, a graduate of OneAsia Q-School in 2013, is the official world record holder of the lowest ever score by a professional -- a 17-under-par 55 he managed at River Oaks Golf Club in his adopted home of Oklahoma -- but Sunday’s round was a career best in a sanctioned tournament.
Gibson, who finished fourth at OneAsia’s Emirates Australian Open last year to earn one of three slots available to Britain’s 2014 Open Championship, had an eagle, ten birdies and two bogeys in an astonishing round that was interrupted when he was on the 17th for nearly three hours by a sudden thunderstorm.
“I had some good yardages and just hit it to within a couple of feet,” he said. “I had some really cheap birdies and that’s what really got me going.”
Bogeys on 10 and 14 saw Pagunsan, a winner here in 2007, slip out of contention, but he birdied three of the last four holes to bounce back into contention.
“It just wasn’t going to be the day today,” he said.
The leading Korean finisher was fifth-placed Maeng Dong-seop (65) who closed at 17 under par, while leading local player George Gandranata (71) had a share of 37th at nine under.
OneAsia’s next event is the 20 million Yuan (around $3.2 million) Volvo China Open at Genzon Golf Club from April 24 - 27.

George Gandranta And Andik Mauludin Only Local Players Making The Cut At Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship
AKARTA, March 28 - Korean Park Sang-hyun, Filipino Juvic Pagunsan and Japan’s Ryuko Tokimatsu shot matching eight-under-par 64s on Friday to share the lead after two rounds of the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
After opening with 67s, the trio are now 13-under around Damai Indah Golf’s 6,545-metre (7,160-yard) Bumi Serpong Damai course in pursuit of their first OneAsia or Japan Tour title as the U.S. $1 million tournament is co-sanctioned by both.
Japan’s Michio Matsumura (67) is a shot behind, while Ouyang Zheng eagled the last to grab sole fifth place at 11 under with a 67. Aussie Rhein Gibson (75) -- holder of the world record low score by a professional -- was at 10 under with Chinese teenager Li Haotong.
Park, who celebrated his son’s first birthday on Friday, was delighted with his effort despite feeling his driving was not up to scratch.
“My boy is one year old today so this is for him,” said 30-year-old, whose only blemish was a bogey on the fifth. “My target today was to make a birdie on every par five and I managed to do that. My putting was also very good, so I am happy.”
Pagunsan, a winner at this course in 2007, also credited a hot putter for his blistering round.
“The greens are very different from when I won here -- they go up and down a lot more -- but I managed to put it close and that was important today,” he said.
The runner-up at this event last year, Pagunsan said he has spent more time on his physical fitness this year in a bid to go one better.
“I am in much better shape this year,” the 35-year-old said. “I hope I can get the results to show for the work.”
Playing in the afternoon, Tokimatsu set up his great round with some devastating tee shots -- he has only missed one fairway in two days -- and thinks he can go even lower.
“I’m very pleased, but for the weekend I want to do better,” he said.
The round of the day belonged to Aussie rookie Jack Wilson who fired nine birdies in his career-best 63, to offset an opening-round 73.
“I hit it good yesterday but couldn't buy a putt,” he said. ”Today was one of those rounds that is out of the box. I hit it really good again, and my local caddie came up with some great reads -- which certainly helped in making the majority of my birdies.”
With the cut at minus three, headline act Y.E. Yang, Asia’s only Major winner, just squeezed in after a second-round 67 left him at four under.
Defending champion Choi Ho-sung, however, took an early flight home after his Friday 67 saw him finish two under for the tournament, while nothing went local hero Rory Hie’s way and he closed at plus four after rounds of 75 and 73.
The best of the local players was George Gandranata (67) who is at four under under, while overnight leader Gareth Paddison (74) of New Zealand was at minus six. Andik Mauludin is the only other local player who made the cut, squeezing into the weekend after a round of 74.

Kiwi Leads After FIrst Round Of The Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, March 27 - New Zealander Gareth Paddison bagged two eagles on his way to a brilliant eight-under-par 64 on Thursday to grab the clubhouse lead midway through the opening round of the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
The left-hander could have gone even lower if not for a bogey on his last hole -- the ninth -- but holds a one-stroke lead over Japan’s Kunihiro Kamii and Australian David McKenzie, with three others a shot further back.
The U.S. $1 million tournament at at Damai Indah Golf’s stunning Jack Nicklaus-designed Bumi Serpong Damai course is the season opener for both OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour, with the winner grabbing a $180,000 slice of the purse.
Paddison has already shown some form this year having won on the PGA Tour of Australasia, but he was nevertheless surprised with his first-round effort.
“It was a bit out of left field, actually. I didn’t expect that of myself,” the 33-year-old said. ”I putted exceptionally well -- played really steady really -- and and all of a sudden you’re standing on the last hole at nine under. It was a pity about that last one.”
Paddison eagled the par five fifth and 18th in similar fashion, hitting driver and four iron to the green before draining putts of 20 and 35 feet respectively.
The Kiwi has been a professional for 12 years but has never won a tournament of this stature and is keen to take his game to the next level.
“I think I have made really big improvements recently thanks to a lot of work with my coach Dennis McDade,” he said. “I really want to step it up this year. I want big things to happen.”
McKenzie was also pleased with his effort on his first serious outing of the year after a bout of tendinitis.
“I played in the pro-am and didn’t think these sorts of scores were out there, but while the greens are very tricky, if you get it in the right place you can leave yourself with some make-able putts,” he said.
Kamii is also looking for his first win on a top-tier tour and could have had a share of the lead if not for a costly bogey on the relatively easy par-five 18th after putting his tee shot in the water.
“I am a bit angry about that,” said the 32-year-old from Osaka, “but I am still happy with my round.”
Several OneAsia champions kept themselves well in the hunt with excellent first rounds including Michael Hendry (67), four-time winner Liang Wenchong (67), and 2012 Order of Merit winner Kim Bi-o (68) -- who triple-bogeyed the eighth.
China’s Ouyang Zheng (66) and Li Haotong (67) also put in a great effort, while Prom Meesawat was top of the Thai contingent with a 69.
Two local players, Asep Saefulloh and Andik Mauludin, put in good rounds, with both carding a round of 67 which puts them in a share of 8th place. Jordan Irawan is 2 shots further back in a tie for 34th, with Danny A. Wdjajaya, Bramantio Adi and George Gandranata the only other local players under par after round 1.
The collaboration between OneAsia and the Japan Tour means the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by the Indonesia Port Corporation, had drawn one of the strongest fields ever assembled in the world’s fourth most populous nation -- headlined by Major winner Y.E. Yang, who was in the afternoon session.

Hometown Hero Rory Hie Eyes Jakarta Victory
JAKARTA, March 25 - Home favorite Rory Hie has set his sights on a first OneAsia win in 2014, and where better to do it than at this week’s season-opening Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
The gifted 25-year-old came close to claiming the title when finishing second to Andre Stolz by a stroke at the 2011 edition of the tournament — he also finished joint runner-up at the Indonesia Open that year — and has shown he thrives in front of a home crowd.
“I always love playing in Indonesia,” said Hie, who won two out of three legs of the Road to the Panasonic Open series in Jakarta last year and also had a top-10 finish in the capital just last month on the Asian Development Tour.
With all the creature comforts of home and doting parents Tommy and Rita, Hie will be able to devote his full attention to the U.S. $1 million tournament taking place at Damai Indah Golf’s Bumi Serpong Damai course, which promises a set-up to test the mettle of one of the classiest fields ever assembled in the world’s fourth most-populous country.
Fully co-sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour and OneAsia, the best players from both circuits will be be in attendance as well as Y.E. Yang, Asia’s only Major champion.
The winners of every Order of Merit since OneAsia’s founding in 2009 have confirmed their entries, as have multiple Japan Tour winners such as Shingo Katayama, Hiroyuki Fujita, Yuta Ikeda and Yoshinori Fujimoto.
Hie’s phenomenal showing in his rookie season in 2011 has yet to transform into a OneAsia win, but the former world top-10 amateur is determined to make the step-up.
“I want to win on OneAsia this year — as in any other year really,” he said, with just a few days to go until the March 27 - 30 tournament.
After a relatively quiet start to 2013, Hie showed his class at the Nanshan China Masters in October with a joint fourth-place finish behind Major winners Charl Schwartzel, Darren Clarke and defending champion Liang Wenchong.
A bit of his inconsistency could be attributed to flitting between contact lenses and spectacles in a bid to sharpen his focus, but Hie intends playing this season entirely in glasses while he mulls whether to undergo Lasik surgery to correct acute short-sightedness.
“I’m sticking with glasses for now,” he said. “Using transition lenses has helped me protect my eyesight so far (but) I’ll wait for the Lasik technology to upgrade so they can perform surgery on a thin cornea.”
Hie is constantly fine-tuning his game in pursuit of improvement and is confident with the feel of the new driver in his bag — as well as another surprising addition.
“I’m using the Taylormade SLDR driver now and a new Taylormade five wood,” he said. “I’ve never used a five wood before, but I feel like am getting too old to hit a two iron.
“I tinker all the time — sometimes not for the better, but golf is best learned from trial and error.
“I know what I am capable of and I would like to get better. You wont get there by staying the same.”
And his opinion of “BSD”, as locals fondly refer to Damai Indah Golf’s Jack Nicklaus-designed Bumi Serpong Damai course?
“It’s definitely a ball strikers golf course. The greens are tricky too, but I’m really looking forward it.”
Playing at home means Hie also get the chance to indulge more in his hobbies off the course.
“I’m an avid music fan — and not just one genre. My favorite band has always been Green Day, but when I am in the mood I listen to some metal from A7X (Avenged Sevenfold) and as well as rap. Eminem is my favorite rapper.
“I also love fast cars and video games.”

First Test For Q-School Winners At Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, March 12 - Q-School winners Sam Yi and Kevin Jun-seok Lee will get the chance to test their mettle against some of the best players in the Asia-Pacific when the 2014 OneAsia season tees off in the Indonesian capital later this month.
The pair play their first tournament as fully exempt OneAsia members at the U.S. $1 million Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation, at Damai Indah Golf’s Bumi Serpon Damai course from March 27 - 30, but will also take on the leading players from the Land of the Rising Sun as the event is fully co-sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour Organization.
“I feel great,” said 22-year-old American Yi, who survived a tense final round at Q-School in California last month to win by a stroke and book his place in all OneAsia’s minimum one million dollar events for 2014.
“I’m excited and nervous at the same time, but I just want to take it all in, learn as much as I can and just be in the moment.”
“This is what we play for,” said newly minted Australian Lee, 25, after dominating Q-School in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia at the weekend.
“I desperately wanted to play in Indonesia, so I am absolutely happy that I managed to do it.”
The Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation, boasts one of the classiest fields ever assembled in the world’s fourth most populous nation, with Major winners Y. E. Yang and John Daly the headline acts.
The winner of every OneAsia Order of Merit since the tour launched in 2009 will be present, as well as an equally strong contingent from Japan that includes such luminaries as Hiroyuki Fujita, Yuta Ikeda and Yoshinori Fujimoto.
“I haven’t played in anything this big before as I only turned pro about a year ago,” said Yi, who was born in California to parents who emigrated from Korea.
“My biggest professional events (so far) would be the the California State Open and Nevada Open — neither of which I played well in.”
Korean-born Lee, in contrast, has played several big events before but has been confined to Australia for the past year while qualifying for citizenship, which came through just last month.
Both came to golf after first trying their hand at other sports — Yi played basketball while the stocky Lee was a skater.
“I knew I couldn’t play basketball (professionally) … I was too short,” said Yi, “but I reckoned with golf, if you had a bit of talent and worked hard enough, I could, you know, make some noise.”
“I worked hard at skating,” said Lee, “but it wasn’t enough. There were better skaters in my age group, so I thought it better to try something else.”
With the encouragement of their parents, their golf careers took off at opposite ends of the earth — Yi in California and Lee in Australia — but they’ll come together in Jakarta and see where the future takes them.
“This season my goal is obviously to keep my card, but also to see what it takes to be a touring professional and to learn the ropes in events as big as those on OneAsia,” said Yi, who boasts a stud earring and punk hairstyle.
For Lee, a professional for a lot longer, he wants to shine particularly in the top co-sanctioned events such as Indonesia, the Thailand Open and next month’s Volvo China Open, which also has the European Tour’s imprimatur.
“I actually didn’t realise that winning here would get me into China until a mate texted me saying he wanted to caddie for me,” he said after his weekend Q-School win.
“My wife was nearly in tears.”
Both will try to avoid the fate of last year’s Q-School winners who struggled after dominating qualification.
American-Filipino Eric Mina, who triumphed in California, and Japan’s Akinori Tani, the Malaysia winner, made just three cuts each to finish 62nd and 77th on the money list respectively, limiting their status for 2014.
OneAsia was founded in 2009 by the China Golf Association, the Korea Golf Tour, the Korea Golf Association and the PGA of Australia.
It has since doubled in size, and the tour's elite suite of tournaments now includes the national Opens of Australia, China, Korea and Thailand -- as well as numerous other prestigious events.
The Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation promises to be fantastic start to another great season on both tours and will be broadcast around the world — and streamed live outside Asia — to hundreds of millions of homes, clubs and other venues.
Enjoy Jakarta is the capital province’s tourism portal, while the Indonesia Port Corporation is a parastatal responsible for the country’s vast harbor and ship-berthing facilities scattered across the archipelago of around 18,000 islands and serving the world’s fourth most populous nation.
The tournament will be promoted by World Sport Group (WSG) for a third time, with the company drawing on their vast experience in sponsorship, media and event management to ensure an outstanding event is staged.

Pagunsan Aiming To Repeat Winning Form At BSD In Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, March 10 - Filipino Juvic Pagunsan will have an ace up his sleeve when he parades his silky skills at this month’s Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
The U.S. $1 million tournament from March 27 - 30 is being played at Damai Indah Golf’s Bumi Serpong Damai course, where Pagunsan claimed his first professional victory in 2007.
He won the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational on the highly-rated Jack Nicklaus-designed course after blasting a final round seven-under 65 for a winning total of 19-under-par 269.
The Filipino romped home in style with a birdie on the 17th and an eagle at the par-five 18th to finish a shot ahead of India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar.
Pagunsan — joint runner up at last year’s tournament — is one of host of big name players to confirm for this month’s event, which will be jointly sanctioned by OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO) and is the season-opener for both circuits.
Major winners John Daly from the United States and Y.E. Yang from Korea are also taking part in the tournament, won last year by Korean Choi Ho-sung.
Pagunsan wrote a slice of history in 2011 when he became the first Filipino to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
While he didn’t win a tournament that year, four top-10 finishes — including runner-up at the cash-rich Barclays Singapore Open — saw him rise to the top. He had a putt to win in a play-off against Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, but just missed.
A year earlier he lifted the ASEAN PGA Tour Order of Merit trophy, helped by a memorable seven-shot victory at the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand.
Pagunsan enjoyed a brilliant amateur career that saw him clean up in 2005, winning the SEA Games in Manila in both the individual and team events, as well as the national amateur Opens of the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia.
With such credentials, the 35-year-old from Canlubang Golf Club outside Manila will be one of the favorites at the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
Situated alongside the impressive Cisadane River west of Jakarta, Bumi Serpong Damai — popularly known by locals as BSD — is framed by the upmarket housing estates of Serpong.
Enjoy Jakarta is the capital province’s tourism portal, while the Indonesia Port Corporation is a parastatal responsible for the country’s vast harbor and ship-berthing facilities scattered across the archipelago of around 18,000 islands and serving the world’s fourth most populous nation.
The tournament is promoted by World Sport Group (WSG) for a third time, with the company drawing on its vast experience in sponsorship, media and event management to ensure an outstanding event is staged.
The U.S. $1 million tournament from March 27 - 30 is being played at Damai Indah Golf’s Bumi Serpong Damai course, where Pagunsan claimed his first professional victory in 2007.

Major Winner Y.E. Yang To Enjoy Jakarta At Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, March 3 - Korea’s Y. E. Yang, a PGA Championship specialist, has confirmed his participation in this month’s Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship presented by Indonesia Port Corporation.
The man who became the first Asian to win a Major when he claimed the 2009 U.S. PGA Championship will compete in the U.S.$1 million OneAsia event in Jakarta at Damai Indah Golf’s Bumi Serpong Damai course from March 27 to 30.
He will join two-time Major winner John Daly in the tournament which will again be jointly sanctioned by OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO), and is the opening tournament of the 2014 season for both.
Yang is a two-time winner on OneAsia having claimed both the Kolon Korea Open and Volvo China Open in 2010.
He has also won five times on the JGTO, but his big breakthrough win came in the 2006 HSBC Champions in China, a World Golf Championships event. He defeated American Tiger Woods by two shots on that occasion.
In March 2009 he lifted his first title on the U.S. PGA Tour at the Honda Classic, becoming only the second Korean after K.J. Choi to win in the United States.
That victory proved to be a teaser for what was to come as in August he marched to victory and stardom in the 91st PGA Championship. He overcame a two-shot deficit going into the final round to finish three strokes ahead of Woods, his playing partner.
For the Indonesia PGA ,a stellar line up of players from both Tours is expected to enter. The event was won last year by Korean Choi Ho-sung. In the inaugural edition of the event in 2011 Australian Andre Stolz beat Indonesian number one Rory Hie by one shot.
Enjoy Jakarta, the capital territory’s tourism portal, is an enthusiastic and generous supporter of golf in Indonesia and delighted to be continuing backing the country’s richest tournament.
“With comprehensive regional television coverage, a world class field and an outstanding venue, Enjoy Jakarta’s partnership with the Indonesia PGA Championship reaps huge reward,” said Joko Widodo, the Governor of Jakarta.
The event marks the first time the Indonesia Port Corporation, the state body responsible for the governance, regulation, maintenance of maritime berths and harbours across the country, has sponsored a golf tournament.
“This tournament provides us with a great opportunity to promote our services throughout Asia,” said R.J. Lino, CEO of the IPC.
The tournament, promoted by World Sport Group, will be broadcast live for all four days on a regional platform including FOX Sports.

More Stars To Shine At Indonesian Masters 2014
Jakarta, 25 February 2014 - Reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand and 2010 British Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa have confirmed their participation at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters which tees off at Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 24-27 2014.
Oosthuizen and Kiradech are the latest in a strong line-up of big hitters that includes defending champion Bernd Wiesberger of Austria, and Asian golfing legend Thongchai Jaidee, who will battle it out at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.
“We are very pleased to hear that Louis Oosthuizen and Kiradech Aphibarnrat have signed up to play in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014. It is indeed fantastic to have such high caliber of professional golfers from both the European Tour and Asian Tour choosing our event to be part of their schedule. I am sure the golfing fans of Indonesia will be very excited with this news and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Royale Jakarta in April,” said Wan Razly Abdullah, Strategy & Finance Director of PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk (CIMB Niaga).
LTR: Irfan Hamid (Asian Tour), Helena Abidin (BMW Indonesia), Wan Razly Abdullah (CIMB Niaga), Ali Mundakir (Pertamina) and George Chandra (Royale Jakarta Golf Club) with the Indonesian Master trophy center stage.
Asian Tour Chairman Kyi Hla Han said: “We are delighted that our 2013 Order of Merit winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Major Winner, Louis Oosthuizen have confirmed their participation for the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has featured prominently on our Asian Tour Schedule since 2011 where it has attracted many leading stars including Lee Westwood and Ernie Els. The event has grown into one of the most popular and exciting events on our Schedule and this is possible only through the unwavering support of CIMB Niaga.”
“CIMB Niaga’s sponsorship goes a long way in promoting international sports tournament to be hosted in Indonesia and this event will also benefit the Indonesian golfers as it gives them the opportunity to play against the best players from the Asian Tour and also the world. We want to bring the international class sports event to Indonesia while at the same time promoting Indonesia to the world. As this event is televised to 650 million viewers household,” added Han.
Asian Tour number one, Kiradech, is one of the most exciting young players to emerge from Thailand. He won the Malaysian Open in March last year to seal his second Asian Tour victory and showcased his immense talent when he eclipsed some of the PGA Tour biggest stars at the CIMB Classic by finishing third.
Oosthuizen secured his place in the history books with a magnificent victory in the 139th Open Championship at St Andrews. His seven stroke win placed him alongside South African legends Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Ernie Els as Open Champions.
Louis nearly added another Major trophy in 2012 but lost to Bubba Watson in a play-off for the Masters Tournament, having produced a magical albatross in the final round at Augusta National - the first on the 575-yard par five second hole - with a 253-yard four iron.
The venue for the event is in top shape, according to George Chandra, COO of Royal Jakarta Golf Club, adding that the torrential rains flooding Jakarta in the last couple of weeks didn't render the course unavailable for a single day. The added drainage over the last few years made sure that the course is playable within 15-30 minutes after the rain stops, ensuring minimum delays in case the weather is unfavorable during the event.
The announcement comes as long term sponsors Pertamina, Official Automobile Partner, BMW Indonesia and national airline Garuda Indonesia continue their commitment to the event, while Oakley signs on as a new partner, signifying the growing strength of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.
Other tournament sponsors include Telkomsel, Noble Group, OB Golf & Lifestyle Magazine, Salonpas, Linc Group, Rolex, JS Luwansa, SvinGolf and San Miguel.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has cemented its place as the nation’s most prestigious event and continues to grow since its inauguration in 2011 with long-term event partners.
The Youth Development initiatives of the tournament include three golf clinics conducted at Royale Jakarta Golf Club for 20 Juniors selected by the Indonesian Golf Association (Persatuan Golf Indonesia) and CIMB Foundation (CIMB Niaga's Junior Development Program for Golf). Each program is conducted monthly beginning in January 2014 and includes a one and a half hour clinic followed by a nine-hole playing lesson. The top five most attentive juniors from each session will win a chance to have an exclusive behind the scenes access to the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014 as well as an opportunity to meet the Star Players of the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Amateur League qualifies one Indonesian amateur for the tournament proper. Indonesian amateurs can participate in this league by entering the newly established Indonesia PGA Champions Tour, which sees 14 tournaments conducted this year.
30 amateurs have the opportunity to play together with Indonesian golf professionals in three-day tournaments conducted across Jakarta and other selected cities in Indonesia. The highest ranked amateur following their participation in the series between January and April 2014 (five events total) wins the opportunity to play against the best of the Asian Tour and PGA Indonesia in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014.
More information about the youth development program and amateur league is available on www.indonesianmasters.co.id
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters also focuses on giving back to the community through its charity initiatives together with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia. To date, the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has managed to build 31 homes for families in need and together with National Energy Company, Pertamina, built a clean water solution for over 10,000 people in the Cilamaya area.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters will have widespread exposure via a strong local media platform and the Asian Tour’s global television platform, which reaches out to over 200 countries and 650 million households on the Live, Highlights, Asian Tour Golf Show and Golfing World.

Two Time Major Winner John Daly To Play 2014 Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, Feb 19 - Two-time Major winner John Daly will be one of the star attractions at next month’s Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, which has also been boosted by the participation of the Indonesia Port Corporation as a presenting sponsor for the first time.
Adding to the spectacle is the fact that the U.S. $1 million tournament — to be played from March 27 to 30 at Damai Indah Golf, Bumi Serpong Damai — will again be jointly sanctioned by OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation, and is the opening tournament of the 2014 season for both.
A stellar field is expected for the now officially titled "Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship, presented by Indonesia Port Corporation", with defending champion Choi Ho-sung from Korea leading the charge.
Australian Andre Stolz beat Indonesian number one Rory Hie by a shot to win the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2011.
American Daly, nicknamed “Wild Thing”, is sure to be a huge draw on his debut and likely to thrill the crowds with his trademark big hitting.
The 47-year-old’s two greatest accomplishments are his “zero to hero” victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, and his playoff victory over Italian Costantino Rocca in the 1995 Open Championship.
According to official performance statistics kept since 1980, Daly in 1997 became the first U.S. PGA Tour player to average more than 300 yards (270 metres) per drive over a full season — a feat he repeated every year between 1999 and 2008. It was only matched by a second player in 2003.
“Through this tournament we are able to showcase to the region the wonderful appeal that our nation’s capital boasts and its tremendous value as a golfing destination.”
The event marks the first time the Indonesia Port Corporation, the state body responsible for the governance, regulation, maintenance of maritime berths and harbours across the country, has sponsored a golf tournament.

“One of our key corporate values is integrity, and this is certainly evident by our decision to sponsor the Indonesia PGA Championship -- an outstanding sporting event that our country can be proud of.”
Damai Indah Golf, the brainchild of Indonesian real estate developer and business baron Ciputra, consists of two international championship courses in completely different and challenging surroundings. Bumi Serpong Damai, affectionately known by locals as “BSD”, is situated alongside the impressive Cisadane River with the up-market housing estates of Serpong providing an impressive backdrop.

“We are firmly established as one of Indonesia’s premier golf courses, well known for staging world class tournaments. Our Jack Nicklaus championship course will provide an outstanding layout for some of the world’s finest players.”
The brainchild of well-known Indonesian real estate developer and business baron Ir. Ciputra, Damai Indah Golf consists of two international championship courses in completely different and challenging surroundings. Bumi Serpong Damai — known to local golfers as "BSD" — is located in the West Java satellite city of the same name, while Pantai Indah Kapuk is along the Java Sea in North Jakarta.
BSD is situated alongside the impressive Cisadane River that is framed by the upmarket housing estates of Serpong.
“The Indonesia PGA Championship together with our friends at the Japan Golf Tour Organisation and the world class Damai Indah Golf course will combine to help launch another great year on OneAsia,” said OneAsia Commissioner and Chairman Sang Y. Chun.
Next year is the sixth season of OneAsia and marks the third staging of the Indonesia PGA Championship.
“This year the Japan Golf Tour Organisation enjoyed an excellent start to the season by joint-sanctioning the Indonesia PGA Championship and Thailand Open with OneAsia and we look forward to a repeat of this in 2014,” said Katsuji Ebisawa, Chairman, JGTO.
In March, Korean Choi Ho-sung survived a dramatic three-hour storm delay on the final hole and drained an eight-foot birdie putt for a two-stroke victory in the Indonesian PGA Championship at Emeralda Golf Club.
At the inaugural event in 2011, Australian Andre Stolz beat Indonesian number one Rory Hie by a shot at Imperial Klub Golf.
The picturesque venue, the first Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Indonesia, will host the U.S. $1 million tournament from March 27 - 30, and for the second successive year will be joint sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO).
The tournament tees off a week after the Thailand Open, also a OneAsia and JGTO event, which will be played from March 13 to 16.

Global Stars Sign Up For Indonesia Open
Jakarta, September 19 - Two-time Major champion Retief Goosen and three-time Tour winner Pablo Larrazabal will headline this year’s Indonesia Open where they will be joined by Asian Tour hero Thongchai Jaidee and local talent Rory Hie at the Pantai Indah Kapuk course at Damai Indah Golf from November 28 to December 1.
South African Goosen has enjoyed a solid year after returning in January from a five-month layoff due a back surgery. A two-time winner at the US Open in 2001 and 2004, he has amassed over 40 professional titles since turning professional in 1990 and was in the top-10 in the Official World Golf Ranking for over 250 weeks between 2001 and 2007. Affectionately known as "The Iceman" due to his extremely calm demeanor, Goosen is no stranger to winning on the Asian Tour with four titles in the continent to his name.
“I have played in many tournaments in Asia over the years and always enjoyed my time in the region and playing in front of Asian fans who have always provided me with generous support. I haven’t played too much this year due to an injury but I am back on the course now and believe my game is in a good place, so I hope I will be amongst the leaders on the Sunday and perhaps have a chance of winning the title,” said Goosen.
The 43-year-old Thongchai, who won this prestigious tournament in 2009, is the highest ranked golfer from Southeast Asia on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and number two in Asia behind Japanese sensation, Hideki Matsuyama.
One of the most consistent Asian players on tour, Thongchai, the only man to win three Asian Tour Order of Merit crowns, made the cut in his last two Majors at the Open Championship and PGA Championship and recorded a top 10 finish recently in Switzerland at the Omega European Masters. He is looking forward to playing in Asia again, where he won the Indonesia Open four years ago.
“I am very much looking forward to playing in Indonesia, back in Asia, as the season comes to a close. It has been a long year, a pretty consistent one for me, but I haven’t quite managed to finish in the winner’s circle and would very much like to do it in Indonesia. I have won there before, the weather conditions suit me and I have been playing well, so I feel I definitely have a genuine chance,” said the Thai.
Spanish star Larrazabal is looking to finish his year on a high after impressive seasons in 2011 and 2012, when he recorded two European Tour wins and two runner-up finishes respectively. Turning professional in 2004, the Barcelonian's three tour victories have all come on European soil, in Germany, France and Spain.
The local challenge will be spearheaded by Hie, who was ranked number one by the Indonesia PGA and was named Player of the Year for 2011 and 2012. Before turning professional in 2008, the Balikpapan-born player reached number six in the World Amateur Rankings and was the number one junior in the United States. He has posted impressive results this year, winning the 2013 Road to Panasonic Open Series and was runner up in the Asian Development Tour’s PGM-Terengganu Masters.
Indonesia’s national championship, the Persatuan Golf Indonesia (PGI), Asian Tour and IMPL signed a three-year agreement last December to hold the tournament from 2013 onwards with the main objectives to elevate the stature of the Indonesia Open, assist in the development of junior golf and promote Indonesia golf in view of the sport making a return to the Olympics in 2016.
Arifin Panigoro, Chairman of PGI said: “We are delighted to welcome world class players such as Retief Goosen, Thongchai Jaidee and Pablo Larrazabal to the 2013 Indonesia Open. Not only are they tremendous professional golfers who thrill the crowds with their skills on the fairway, they are true ambassadors of the sport, and I hope our young local talents will take this opportunity and learn from these three great individuals, on and off the course.”
The Indonesia Open, with a total prize fund of US$750,000 this year, was established in 1974 and boasts of a roll of honor that includes prominent names such as the late American Payne Stewart, Frank Nobilo of New Zealand, Filipino legend Frankie Minoza, Australia’s Craig Parry, Chinese Taipei’s Lu Chien-soon, Myanmar’s Mya Aye and Thai duo Thongchai Jaidee and Thaworn Wiratchant, who are both Asian Tour Order of Merit champions.

Jakarta Classic Set For Debut On Asian Development Tour
Jakarta, July 1 - The Asian Development Tour (ADT) will provide another new playing opportunity for emerging stars with the launch of the inaugural Jakarta Classic later this month, which raises the season’s schedule to 12 tournaments.
The US$60,000 event will be played at the Imperial Klub Golf from July 17 to 20 where leading players from Indonesia will compete against an international field from the ADT, which is the feeder circuit to the premier Asian Tour.
With the addition of a new tournament, the region’s rising stars will enjoy another occasion to improve their world rankings as all ADT events receive Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points starting this year, which is a huge boost for players.
The OWGR will be used to determine the top 60-man field at the World Cup of Golf in Australia this November and the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro in 2016.
OB Golf Events, the event promoter, hailed the launch of the Jakarta Classic, saying it would provide an impetus for Indonesia’s budding golfers to raise their standard of play while competing against players from the ADT.
“We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Jakarta Classic, which we believe will offer a strong platform for Indonesia’s golfers to further excel in the game. I believe this new tournament can greatly impact our players’ careers as they seek to establish themselves on the ADT, which provides a pathway onto the Asian Tour,” said OB Golf Events.
“It is fantastic that all ADT events receive Official World Golf Ranking points and this will be important for Indonesian players as they will have the opportunity to improve their rankings.”
A total of 144 players will compete in the Jakarta Classic, with the field being split equally between the ADT and Indonesian PGA.
Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han said Indonesia was a growing and important market for the Asian Tour and ADT.
Apart from the Jakarta Classic, there are two other events staged in Indonesia on the Asian Tour schedule, namely the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters which was held in May and the Indonesia Open which is scheduled from November 28 to December 1.
“There are a lot of young and talented golfers from Indonesia who are keen to gain more playing experience and sharpen their skills. While they may not be competing regularly on the Asian Tour, the opportunity to compete in the Jakarta Classic on the ADT will be a good first stepping stone,” said Han.
“I believe Indonesian players will benefit from the ADT platform and I would like to express our fullest appreciation to OB Golf Events for taking this initiative to launch the Jakarta Classic,” he added.
The Jakarta Classic will be the seventh leg of the 2013 ADT season. So far, a total of 12 tournaments have been confirmed this season, with several others to be announced in due course.
The ADT was launched in 2010 with five tournaments before growing to eight in 2011 and 13 last year. It has proven to be a successful platform for upcoming players to gain entry into the region’s premier Tour, which is celebrating its milestone 10th season in 2013.
Created along the lines of the European Challenge Tour and Web.com Tour in the United States, the ADT will reward the top-three players on the final Order of Merit with Asian Tour cards for the following year.

Amateur Kevin C. Akbar, who had the worst score by any local player at the first day with 83, took revenge today with a stellar performance, scoring 5 birdies and 2 bogeys in the process. His second round 70 was the best round of any Indonesian player during the first two days, indicating that we may hear a lot more from this player in the future.
High expectations for a weekend performance for George Gandranata did not materialize, as his second round sore of 82 had him finish in a tie for just 140th place.

Star-Studded Field Getting Ready For CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters
Jakarta, 4 April 2013 - Multiple Major winner Ernie Els of South Africa expressed his excitement to compete against a star studded field at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters on the Asian Tour next month.During a live video call from Florida, where he is at the moment in preparation for the Masters, Els was interviewed by the Indonesian press gathered for a press conference at the Sari Pan Pacific hotel.
During the same press conference it was also confirmed that golfing star Bernd Wiesberger of Austria, who finished tied seventh in last year’s CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters and went on to win the Ballantines Championship in Korea the week after, will be playing the event. Wiesberger has risen through the world rankings quickly since coming onto the European Tour scene and is starting to make a name for himself throughout the globe.
His presence in the tournament adds more attraction to the US$750,000 Asian Tour event played at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club from May 2nd–5th. Tournament organizers also took the opportunity to welcome some new sponsors and partners to the event including Garuda Indonesia, Loewe Home Entertainment, Ricoh and Concha Y Toro.
“I am very pleased with how the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters is developing. Since coming on as title sponsor in 2012, CIMB Niaga has been very clear about its vision to bridge the gap in golf in Indonesia. Our dream is to see everyone’s potential maximized from Juniors through to Professional golf and if we can provide a solid platform to assist this, we are achieving our goal to develop golf in the nation.” said Gatot Subagio, Head of Corporate Communications of PT. Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk.
Besides all the positive news there was also some disappointing news for the fans of Indonesia's best player Rory Hie, who now has confirmed that he will not be playing at the Indonesian Masters. Like last year he will be playing at the Volvo China Open scheduled the same week.
Indonesia PGA Chairman Syafei Asnap stressed however that despite the absence of Rory there still is a strong Indonesian representation in the Indonesia Masters, and he doesn't rule out an Indonesian winner.
With less than 30 days to go till the US$750,000 prize purse event kicks off, sponsors and partners are preparing themselves for a great event. Jakarta can look forward to witnessing a “Clash of the Titans” event on the fairways and greens of Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

L-R: Adrian Wahyudi (Royale Jakarta), Gatot Subagio (CIMB Niaga) and Syafei Asnap (Indonesia PGA) indicate that all is ready for the Indonesia Masters to kick off next month.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has cemented its place as the nations most prestigious event and continues to grow since its inauguration in 2011. Great things are planned for this event, which has a strong family of sponsors all sharing the same vision of making the event into one of the biggest in the ASEAN region one day.
The event also focuses on giving back to the community through its charity initiatives together with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia. To date, the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has managed to build 25 homes for families in need and together with National Energy Company, Pertamina, built a clean water solution for over 10,000 people in the Cilamaya area.
The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters will have widespread exposure via a strong local media platform and the Asian Tour’s global television platform, which reaches out to over 200 countries and 650 million households on the Live, Highlights, Asian Tour Golf Show and Golfing World. Indonesia’s premier news channel, Metro TV, will also be broadcasting the event locally for 10 hours live and will be airing additional shows and features related to the event and the positive impact to the golf industry and overall economy of Indonesia.
Partners include Title Sponsor CIMB Niaga, Salonpas by Hisamitsu (Main Partner), BMW (Official Car), Navigat Energy (Main Partner), Telkomsel (Official Communications Partner), Garuda Indonesia (Official Airline), Sari Pan Pacific Hotel Jakarta (Official Hotel), Rolex (Official Time Keeper), SvingGolf (Official Apparel), Loewe (Official TV), Concha Y Toro (Official Wine), Ricoh (Official Office Supplier), Srixon (Official Ball) and San Miguel (Official Beer).

Choi Wins Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship
JAKARTA, March 31 - Korean Choi Ho-sung survived a dramatic three-hour storm delay on the final hole and drained an eight-foot birdie putt for a fourth-round 67 and a two-stroke victory in the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship on Sunday.
Choi finished the U.S. $1 million tournament at tournament at 19 under, holding off a late challenge by Filipino Juvic Pagunsan (66), overnight leader Kaname Yokoo (70) of Japan and Korean youngster Song Young-han (68).
"I can't believe it," a beaming Choi said after sinking his final putt and as lightning jagged through the gloom around the Arnold Palmer-designed Emeralda Golf Club course.
"I thought we would might not be able to finish. I really didn't want to have to do it all over again tomorrow."
This tournament, and the season-opening Thailand Open a fortnight ago, were co-sanctioned by both OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation, bringing together one of the most powerful Asia-Pacific fields ever assembled. Earnings count towards both money lists, and a win at either gives the champion status on both tours.
Choi pulled out of the Thailand event after the first round, unable to cope with the stifling heat and drenching humidity, but he coped much better under similar circumstances in Jakarta.
"I was better prepared," he said. "This time I had enough towels and ice, and I used an umbrella around the course."
A shot behind the lead overnight and playing in the final group, Choi made his intentions clear from the start with a slick eagle on the first that took him to the top of the leaderboard.
But an hour ahead Pagunsan was making his charge for the title, turning at four under and then finishing birdie-birdie to give the 40-year-old Choi something to think about.
"I didn't expect to be making such a strong challenge, but as I finished I saw Choi had dropped a shot on 15 and suddenly I was in the lead," said Pagunsan.
A poor read by Choi led to that bogey, but he steadied the ship with a clutch par putt on 16, and then a birdie on 17 before the storm broke.
When play finally resumed, Choi split the fairway with his final drive and then stiffed his approach for what became a routine birdie and the winning $180,000 cheque.
