R&A Helps Refine Development Program In Indonesia

Indonesian golf has gained support from world golf governing body The R&A for its development program in the hopes of bearing more strong golfers in the future.

The Indonesian Golf Association (PGI), under the chairmanship of Murdaya Widyawimarta, known as Po, has brought in professionals from The R&A to assist in refining and developing the country’s golf from an early stage.

“The initiative came from Pak Po. He asked and then we said, ‘How can we help?’” The R&A’s director for Asia-Pacific, Dominic Wall, told reporters over the weekend at the association’s office in the Pondok Indah Golf Course-Golf Gallery Building, Jakarta.

The R&A, which takes its name from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, is the ruling authority of golf throughout the world except in the US and Mexico, where this responsibility rests with the United States Golf Association (USGA). It works in collaboration with national amateur and professional golf organizations in more than 110 countries.

The R&A cooperates with the USGA in producing and regularly revising the “Rules of Golf”, and the two bodies have issued the rules jointly since 1952. The rules are revised on a four-year cycle and with the latest edition, which became effective on Jan. 1, 2012, for the first time a single common set of rules applied throughout the world.

Dading Soetarso, a PGI official in charge of development affairs for young golfers, said that the program had been launched due to concerns about low growth rates of junior golfers in the country.

“Out of around 250 million people in Indonesia, we only have 250 junior golfers. Therefore, we need to do something to grow the sport — one among many things is by attracting children to reach golf,” he told The Jakarta Post.

Wall said he had learned that Indonesia had an enormous potential in golf.

“Indonesia is like a sleeping giant of golf around the region. You got so many things in place here. It’s just a matter of refining the system and providing maybe some more expertise to help people here to understand how to develop the sport,” said the Australian.

Wall, who took up his current position in 2009 and has since been based in Hong Kong, further said that Indonesia’s success in collecting one bronze and two silver medals in the golf competition at the recent Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June, which came about after a six-to-nine-month elite program, testified to his conviction about the country’s potential for thriving golf.

At the biennial multisport event featuring athletes from the 11 countries in the region, Indonesian golfers were ranked in the top three after Thailand (four gold, one bronze) and Singapore (two silver, two bronze) in golf.

“I think the potential is there if you have the right system in place. You’ve got wonderful golf courses across the country, you’ve got practice facilities, and I think now you’ve got a supportive PGI through Pak Po […] to build a healthy situation [for the development of Indonesian golf]. The future of Indonesian golf is exciting,” said Wall, who is tournament director for the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation.

Wall has more than 20 years of experience in national- and international-level sports management, which includes 16 years in a number of roles for the Australian Golf Union (AGU) and Golf Australia (GA). He also spent five years as development manager for the Australian Coaching Council based at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

As an initial step of the development program, the PGI has begun introducing the sport to young students at several schools in Greater Jakarta.

Wall said that he saw positive responses from children following the PGI team’s visits to schools to introduce the sport. “The program is dedicated after school-hour sessions. If the kids are really enjoying it, I think it’s going to be great to have the program on a weekly basis.”

In providing ongoing support to children with potential golf skills, Wall suggested the program could also work hand in hand with local golf clubs. “I think it’s great for the school kids to experience playing on a golf course — not necessarily at cost, but maybe something that a golf club can provide on times that the course isn’t busy.”

In return, he said, golf courses could enjoy benefits as those children might become their members in the future. Clubs are encouraged to grow the sport — starting from the junior players — in order to grow the business.

The R&A and the PGI are currently working closely to refine and develop the program, which is expected to be done by the end of this year. If things go well, the program is set to run within six to 12 months next year, which could then provide the development team with key indicators of performance in order to grow the program across the country.

“We’re very much now focusing on the internal view of The R&A on performance targets, measures and accountability. I think the environment is quite right to do [so],” said Wall.

Dading said that the program was packaged in a fun and exciting activity in order to create excitement among children.

The program has so far reached children at the Global Jaya and Binus private schools in Greater Jakarta. Dading said the PGI may host a school-level competition when more than 10 schools were involved in the program.

Pondok Indah To Host Indonesia Open 2015

Jakarta, June 11 - Organizers of the 2015 Indonesia Open today announced that this year’s edition will be played at Pondok Indah Golf Course, located in the heart of the country’s capital city, Jakarta.

The tournament, which offers a US$750,000 prize purse, is Indonesia’s oldest professional golf tournament and will take place from November 12-15.

Mr. Murdaya Widyawimarta Po, President of Persatuan Golf Indonesia, the national golf association of Indonesia and organizers of the Indonesia Open, commented, “As this is our national Open we feel that the tournament should move around and be ‘shared’ amongst the top courses in Jakarta. Entry to this year’s event will be free to all spectators which is our way of giving back to the game and further contribute to the overall development of the sport in our country.

Everyone is very excited about the new venue for this year’s tournament. Pondok Indah Golf Course is a magnificent course and I have no doubt they will put on a great show for players and spectators.”

The Pondok Indah Golf Course was established on August 17, 1976, and designed by the renowned course architect, Robert Trent Jones. The course has hosted several professional events, including the 1983 World Cup of Golf.

Kyi Hla Han, Chairman of the Asian Tour, said, “The Indonesia Open is highly regarded as one of the popular national Opens in Asia. With the Indonesia Open celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, we look forward to witnessing more defining moments from the tournament again. The tournament has been growing in stature each year and we are excited to welcome the return of the best players from the Asian Tour to the 2015 Indonesia Open”.

Pak Budi Kosasih, General Manager of Pondok Indah Golf Course, was understandably thrilled with the news. He said, “Everyone at the golf club is honored that we have been chosen to host Indonesia’s most prestigious golf tournament, our national open. We have a wonderful golf course; it is a real test of skill and judgement, and we are all looking forward to welcoming the professionals to our club.”

The 2014 Indonesia Open was won by three-time Major winner, Padraig Harrington. He defeated Thai rookie Thanyakon Khrongpha on the final hole of the tournament, to win by two strokes.

CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Cultivates Stars Of The Future

Jakarta, 15 January 2015 - The prestigious CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters will once more be a stop on the Asian Tour end of this April. As the top tier golf event in Indonesia, the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has consistently supported the development of young Indonesian golfers.

In keeping with this principle, the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has incorporated a Youth Development program, which seeks to support budding Indonesian golfers in further sharpening their skills. The program offers the opportunity for talented junior golfers to learn a variety of golfing techniques within a special coaching curriculum.

The coaching workshop will be divided into three sessions and will draw junior golfers from the Indonesian Golf Association (PGI) and the CIMB Foundation. Approximately 20 junior golfers will participate in each of the sessions, which will be held on January 25, February 15, and March 15. 5 outstanding participants from each session will be selected to receive exclusive access to the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2015. They will be afforded the opportunity to attend various tournament functions and meet with the stars of the event.

PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk (CIMB Niaga) as the title sponsor of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters fully supports the Youth Development program.

“One of our goals in being the lead sponsor of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters is to encourage the growth of youth golf in Indonesia. Through the Youth Development program, junior golfers are able to enjoy the feeling of a championship atmosphere that comes through an association with world class golfers. We are confident in reaching this goal and we are delighted to be a part of this growth process,” said CIMB Niaga President Director Arwin Rasyid.

Since its inception, the Youth Development program has worked closely with the PGI and CIMB Foundation which has proved integral in achieving the long-term goals of the program.

This Youth Development component has clear synergies with CIMB Foundation having one of the most extensive junior golf programs in the ASEAN region.

The collaboration of CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters and the CIMB Foundation has already succeeded in creating a junior golf framework that is similar in standards to the world of professional golf. A good example is Jordan Surya Irawan, a 19 year-old golfer who, with the support of the CIMB Foundation, was fortunate enough to join a number of other ASEAN golfers in training at the US PGA Tour Academy in Sawgrass, Florida five years ago.

After completing his training, Jordan was successful in winning a number of titles, including the champion of Enjoy Jakarta Junior World Golf Open 2011 and the ASEAN Schoolboys Golf Championship 2012. Jordan also won public attention as the youngest participant in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2012 at the age of 17.

Another product of the CIMB Foundation programme is Joshua Andrew Wirawan, who also had the opportunity to train in Florida. Like his predecessor, Andrew went on to become the champion of the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship 2012 and secured the runner-up position in a series of six Indonesian Golf Tour events.

“The PGI, along with other stakeholders, is very eager to further develop golf in Indonesia. We must increase programs aimed at the junior golfers in order to assure that there is a solid foundation for the regeneration of youth golf in Indonesia. The Youth Development program at CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters is very much aligned with our programs. This is what we need to continue to work on and increase the appeal of golf to parents and children alike”, Head of Junior Division of the PGI, Budi Kosasih was quoted as saying.

CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters hopes that young golfers experience the benefits of the Youth Development program and that this generation of budding young golfers has a better future in store.

George Gandranata Aims For Glory At Bank BRI Indonesia Open

Jakarta, November 14 - Indonesia’s rising star George Gandranata hopes to shine at the BANK BRI Indonesia Open against the Asian Tour’s best in December.

As the highest ranked player in Indonesia, finishing strongly at this year’s BANK BRI Indonesia Open, scheduled for December 4 to 7 at Jakarta’s Damai Indah Golf, Pantai Indah Kapuk Course, will be a great way to wrap up a successful season.

After sharpening his game on the Asian Tour and the Asian Development Tour (ADT), the 28-year-old, who won four titles on the local circuit, is relishing the opportunity to tee it up in his National Open.

“I am ready to take on our national championship which is the biggest event for local players,” said Gandranata. “As Indonesian golfers, we all hope to give our best performance on home soil. There is been only one Indonesian champion, Benny Kasiadi in 1989. It would be a huge honor to win, adding my name to the list as the second Indonesian to claim victory.”

The talented Indonesian takes a humble view of his recent wins but credits his huge improvement after contesting regularly against Asia’s best and talented golfers on the Asian Tour and ADT.

“The experience I have gained from getting into contention in both ADT events and Asian Tour tournaments has been invaluable”, Gandranata added. “I have learned something different from every player I played with making me to a better player.”

Gandranata has been working with his coach Philippe De Busschere of the LeadBetter Golf Academy in Indonesia since October last year. De Busschere encouraged Gandranata to make adjustments in his body movement and weight transfer, delivering instant improvement in his game.

“It’s still a work in progress, but I have seen improvements in hitting the ball more solidly and driving further in distance,” Gandranata commented.

In addition, Gandranata also experimented with changing tactics from his usual aggressive approach to more conservative play. This paid immediate dividends as he emerged as the sole Indonesian to make the cut at the Indonesian Masters in April, the first time he played during the weekend in three attempts.

When asked his view on the Damai Indah Golf, Pantai Indah Kapuk Course, host venue of the BANK BRI Indonesia Open, Gandranata responded with confidence: “It’s a challenging course, especially when it’s windy which can be often. But I like it because it plays tough for everyone. I will also have a caddy who knows the course well giving me a fresh pair of eyes for the green.”

Mr. Murdaya Widyawimarta (Po), President of Persatuan Golf Indonesia, the national golf association of Indonesia and organizer of the BANK BRI Indonesia Open, welcomed the confirmation of Gandranata, “George is not only a rising star on the golf course, he is also fast becoming a role model for Indonesian golfers of all ages. We are very proud of him and wish him the best of luck in competing in a whole new level as he has grown in experience and skill in the past year.”

Jakarta, 20 March 2014 - Sponsors and partners of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014 have pledged to build more homes for the less fortunate as part of its Habitat for Humanity Indonesia drive.

While the Asian Tour event has attracted a host of world class players, it has also placed much emphasis on the development of golf in Indonesia.

The Youth Development initiatives of the tournament include three golf clinics conducted at Royale Jakarta Golf Club for 20 Juniors selected by the Indonesian Golf Association (Persatuan Golf Indonesia) and CIMB Foundation (CIMB Group's Junior Development Program for Golf).

Each program is conducted monthly beginning in January 2014 and includes a one and a half hour clinic followed by a nine-hole playing lesson.

The top five most attentive juniors from each session will stand a chance to win an exclusive behind the scenes access to the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014 as well as an opportunity to meet the Star Players of the event.

The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Amateur League qualifies one Indonesian amateur for the tournament proper.

Indonesian amateurs can participate in this league by entering the newly established Indonesia Golf Tour, which sees 14 tournaments conducted this year.

More Stars To Shine At Indonesian Masters 2014

Jakarta, 25 February 2014 - Reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand and 2010 British Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa have confirmed their participation at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters which tees off at Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 24-27 2014.

Oosthuizen and Kiradech are the latest in a strong line-up of big hitters that includes defending champion Bernd Wiesberger of Austria, and Asian golfing legend Thongchai Jaidee, who will battle it out at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.

“We are very pleased to hear that Louis Oosthuizen and Kiradech Aphibarnrat have signed up to play in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters 2014. It is indeed fantastic to have such high caliber of professional golfers from both the European Tour and Asian Tour choosing our event to be part of their schedule. I am sure the golfing fans of Indonesia will be very excited with this news and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Royale Jakarta in April,” said Wan Razly Abdullah, Strategy & Finance Director of PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk (CIMB Niaga).
LTR: Irfan Hamid (Asian Tour), Helena Abidin (BMW Indonesia), Wan Razly Abdullah (CIMB Niaga), Ali Mundakir (Pertamina) and George Chandra (Royale Jakarta Golf Club) with the Indonesian Master trophy center stage.

Asian Tour Chairman Kyi Hla Han said: “We are delighted that our 2013 Order of Merit winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Major Winner, Louis Oosthuizen have confirmed their participation for the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.

The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters has featured prominently on our Asian Tour Schedule since 2011 where it has attracted many leading stars including Lee Westwood and Ernie Els. We want to bring the international class sports event to Indonesia while at the same time promoting Indonesia to the world. As this event is televised to 650 million viewers household,” added Han.

Asian Tour number one, Kiradech, is one of the most exciting young players to emerge from Thailand. He won the Malaysian Open in March last year to seal his second Asian Tour victory and showcased his immense talent when he eclipsed some of the PGA Tour biggest stars at the CIMB Classic by finishing third.

Oosthuizen secured his place in the history books with a magnificent victory in the 139th Open Championship at St Andrews. His seven stroke win placed him alongside South African legends Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Ernie Els as Open Champions.

Louis nearly added another Major trophy in 2012 but lost to Bubba Watson in a play-off for the Masters Tournament, having produced a magical albatross in the final round at Augusta National - the first on the 575-yard par five second hole - with a 253-yard four iron.

The venue for the event is in top shape, according to George Chandra, COO of Royal Jakarta Golf Club, adding that the torrential rains flooding Jakarta in the last couple of weeks didn't render the course unavailable for a single day. The added drainage over the last few years made sure that the course is playable within 15-30 minutes after the rain stops, ensuring minimum delays in case the weather is unfavorable during the event.

The announcement comes as long term sponsors Pertamina, Official Automobile Partner, BMW Indonesia and national airline Garuda Indonesia continue their commitment to the event, while Oakley signs on as a new partner, signifying the growing strength of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters.

Other tournament sponsors include Telkomsel, Noble Group, OB Golf & Lifestyle Magazine, Salonpas, Linc Group, Rolex, JS Luwansa, SvinGolf and San Miguel.

Pantai Indah Kapuk To Host $750,000 Indonesia Open On Asian Tour

Jakarta, June 27 - The Indonesia Open will offer a prize fund of US$750,000 when the Asian Tour event is staged at the Pantai Indah Kapuk course from November 28 to December 1, officials announced today.

Indonesia’s national championship, which is returning onto the Asian Tour’s Schedule after a lapse of three years, is poised to play a major role in determining the winner of the prestigious Asian Tour Order of Merit as the Open will be held towards the tail-end of the 2013 season.

The challenging Pantai Indah Kapuk course, designed by the world renowned Robert Trent Jones Jr, has successfully hosted Asian Tour tournaments in the past and earlier this month staged the World Junior Golf Championship.

The Persatuan Golf Indonesia (PGI), Asian Tour and IMPL signed a three-year agreement last December to hold the Indonesia Open from 2013 onwards where the main objectives are to elevate the stature of the Indonesia Open, assist in the development of junior golf and promote Indonesia golf in view of the sport making a return to the Olympics in 2016.

Officials believe the Indonesia Open will also help ensure the country becomes the focal point of world golf as the championship will be beamed live to over 180 countries and 650 million homes around the world on the Asian Tour’s television platform.

The top stars of the Asian Tour, whose membership includes players from over 30 different nationalities, will head full speed to the Indonesia Open, which will receive Official World Golf Ranking points.

The Persatuan Golf Indonesia (PGI) Chairman Arifin Panigoro said: “We are very excited that the 2013 Indonesia Open is shaping up into one of the best ever championships. We are confident our partnership with the Asian Tour and IMPL will provide the impetus to grow the Indonesia Open into one of the leading tournaments in Asia.

“I am hopeful the Indonesian players will benefit immensely by competing against the stars from the Asian Tour. It is our aim to unearth many more Indonesian winners in the near future as we want to establish champions in the mould of Kasiadi who remains as the only Indonesian to win our National Open in 1989.

“We are also delighted to announce the Pantai Indah Kapuk course will host this year’s Indonesia Open with a prize fund of US$750,000. The PGI is excited about the long-term future of our Open as we will also celebrate the 40th edition in 2014 which will be a significant milestone for the PGI.”

Asian Tour CEO Mike Kerr said: “We are confident the 2013 Indonesia Open will be a great success. Pantai Indah Kapuk course is a wonderful venue which has successfully hosted Asian Tour tournaments in the past and our players will enjoy returning to the golf course.

“This championship has a colorful history where great players have won the title. It is also our intention to work closely with the PGI to develop golf in this country in view of golf becoming an Olympic sport again in 2016.

“As a full member of the International Federation of PGA Tours, all Asian Tour tournaments receive Official World Golf Ranking points which will be used to determine the 60-man field at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and also the World Cup of Golf.

“This will boost the stature and importance of the Indonesia Open and provide the springboard for Indonesian players to play more regularly on the Asian Tour.”

Grant Slack, Senior Vice President, IMPL Golf said: “Through the close collaboration with all parties, the Indonesia Open will be one of the main highlights of the Asian Tour’s calendar in 2013.

“IMPL will work very closely with the PGI and Asian Tour to ensure the success and growth of the Indonesia Open which will receive widespread and high-quality live television coverage across the globe.

“Indonesia is a wonderful country and a growing golfing destination with so much to offer visitors and golfers of all abilities including the professionals. We believe this tournament will promote Indonesia as a wonderful destination.”

Established in 1974, the Indonesia Open’s roll of honor include prominent names such as the late American Payne Stewart, Frank Nobilo of New Zealand, Filipino legend Frankie Minoza, Australia’s Craig Parry, Chinese Taipei’s Lu Chien-soon, Myanmar’s Mya Aye and Thai duo Thongchai Jaidee and Thaworn Wiratchant, who are both Asian Tour Order of Merit champions.
