Cast Of Champions Poised For CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters
Jakarta, April 14 - A champions-laden cast from the Asian Tour will be out to challenge title holder Lee Westwood of England at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS next week.
Asia’s history-maker Thongchai Jaidee, who holds an unprecedented three Order of Merit titles and 13 victories, will spearhead an elite field which will include no fewer than 40 winners at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 19 to 22.
World number three Westwood, fresh from his third place finish at the Masters Tournament, and Major champions Ian Woosnam of Wales and Michael Campbell of New Zealand will also headline the US$750,000 full-field Asian Tourevent.
Six of this season’s winners, Australia’s Scott Hend and Kieran Pratt, Indian duo Digvijay Singh and Anirban Lahiri, American David Lipsky and Singaporean veteran Mardan Mamat, will compete in the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS with the aim of securing a second victory of the season.
Other leading contenders from Asia will include sweet-swinging Thai Prayad Marksaeng, Lu Wei-chih of Chinese Taipei, 12-time Asian Tour winner Thaworn Wiratchant and Bangladeshi star Siddikur.
All eyes will also be on former world amateur number one Peter Ulhein of the United States, who has received a sponsor’s invitation to compete at Royale Jakarta, and Sri Lankan prospect Mithun Perera, who finished second in the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic last week.
The highly-decorated Thongchai finished second in last year’s Indonesian Masters, three shots behind Westwood. The veteran will be hoping to go one spot higher next week and will count on his belly putter to shoot him to a 14th career victory.
“My putting is getting better, I’ve got more confidence now with the belly putter,” said Thongchai, who opted for the longer stick at the start of the new season.
The Thai knows he needs to continue to work hard at his game and acknowledged that it was now getting tougher to challenge for honors especially with the rise of the new generation of Asian golfers.
Big-hitting Hend, winner in Singapore last week, will be hoping of extend his rich vein of form. The two-time Asian Tour winner hopes his booming drives will play to his advantage where he has averaged 316 yards off the tee this year.
“I went back to Florida and got myself a brand new set of clubs, new wedges and a brand new three-wood. Everything is brand new except for my putter and driver. I spend the past four weeks practicing and hitting like 400 to 500 balls a day,” said Hend.

Westwood Set To Defend Title At The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Presented By PNTS
Jakarta, 11 April 2012 - England’s Lee Westwood will fly in next week to play at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS in great form after finishing tied third at the Masters Tournament last Sunday.
Westwood, whose Indonesian Masters triumph was one of four victories last season, ended his week in the year’s first Major with a four-under-par 68, and an eight-under-par 280 total, two shots behind play-off duo Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen. Watson won the Masters at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off.
The Englishman, who is ranked third in the world, was disappointed to come so close again to his maiden victory, but will certainly be fired up when he plays at the US$750,000 full-field Asian Tour event at the prestigious Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 19-22.
“Keep plugging and working out. Don't give up. I don't feel like giving up just yet,” said Westwood of his Major quest.
He said his putter let him down in crucial moments especially in dropping two bogeys in his opening three holes.
“Yeah, the story of the week is you have got to putt well to win the Masters, and I haven't putted well. Came out and missed a two-footer on the third inexplicably, and that is not the kind of thing that will give you confidence for the rest of the round.”
“So I didn't really make that many putts. The longest I made was a 10 foot on 18. I made a good one at the right time, but that's not really good enough,” he said.
Westwood’s high finish at Augusta National on Sunday was his sixth top-three finish in a Major championship since 2008. He also came close in the Masters in 2010 when he finished second.
“I keep getting in it. It's a great place to be. It's an enjoyable place to be as a professional golfer. Especially to shoot four-under on the back nine. It's the kind of response you want from yourself,” said Westwood.
Last year, Westwood produced a sterling performance on his 38th birthday to win the 2011 Indonesian Masters by three shots with his 19-under-par 269 total. It was a memorable week as victory pushed him back into the world number one spot, albeit briefly.
He went on to secure victories in Korea, South Africa and Thailand.
As part of its initiative to be a part of the development of professional golf in Indonesia, PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk has signed on as the Title Sponsor of the Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS, Indonesia’s most prestigious international golf tournament, last month.
“We are looking forward to Westwood's return to Indonesia,” said Arwin Rasyid, President Director of PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk.
"His persistence will ensure that he is a competitor who is hard to beat, he will definitely turn this tournament into an event that everyone will look forward to. As for the Indonesian golfers, they will have the opportunity to watch this prestigious tournament to compare with their own skills against the world’s best," Arwin continued.
The event will see Major champions such as Ian Woosnam of Wales and Michael Campbell of New Zealand who both will be joining Westwood with other leading Asian Tour stars in the elite field.
Sponsors and partners of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters will enjoy widespread exposure via a strong local media platform and the Asian Tour’s global television platform, which reaches out to over 200 countries and 650 million households live of the highlights in TV programs such as Asian Tour Golf Show and Golfing World.
