Selangor, Shah Alam, 27 May 2012 - After phenomenal second and third rounds Gavin Kyle Green, 19, of Malaysia managed to do it all over again in the final round of the 110th Malaysian Amateur Open. His final-round 68 gave him a tournament total 14-under-par 274 and a 6-stroke victory ending the drought. The last win by a Malaysian was in 1997 by R. Nachimuthu.
Conducted by the Malaysian Golf Association, the 110th Malaysian Amateur Open at Glenmarie was a 72-hole stroke play event being played on the par-72, 6,412-metre Valley Championship Course at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club. The 125-player field featured players from Australia (3), Bahrain (5), Bangladesh (2), Brunei (2), Hong Kong (1), Indonesia (3), India (5), Korea (1), Lebanon (1), Philippines (2), Pakistan (2), Singapore (10), Sri Lanka (2), Thailand (2), Taiwan (3), UK (1) and Malaysia (79). In all, 17 foreign countries were represented.
The tournament began in 1894 at Penang Golf Club, making it one of the oldest amateur events in the world. That consistency has helped create a tournament steeped in tradition and has helped produced many champions who have graduated to paid rank like Mardan Mamat, Tongchai Jaidee and Mike Campbell to name a few.
"My short game was really good all week," Gavin said. "My game feels really good right now. I'm just going to try and keep it up and get ready for the next tournament."
"I always want to do well for my country," Gavin explained. "To be able to win this event after 15 years is awesome."
Poom Saksansin who won the individual title of the Putra Cup in 2010 at the Royal Selangor Golf Club and who is currently ranked first in Thailand, entered Sunday 3 strokes back of the leader, Gavin. His round of 1-under-par 71 included four birdies and 3 bogeys.
"Gavin was on fire today so I knew he was not going to fall back to me," the Chantakburi native said. "I was trying to catch up and go after him but I was running out of holes."
"He deserved the win,' Poom said. "I am sure I am going to meet him in other events."
Jordan Surya Irawan of Indonesia surged up the leaderboard to finish third after carding a superb 3-under-par 69 for 5-under-par 283 tournament total.
MGA's overseas based player, Arie Fauzi carded even-par 72 for 4-under-par 284 tournament total to finish fourth.
Rinaldi Adiyandono of Indonesia and Oliver Goss of Australia carded 71 and 72 respectively to bring their tournament totals to 286, which puts them in a tie for fifth place.
