The Asia Pacific Champions Tour (APCT) held its inaugural China event, the US$50,000 CPM China Classic 2012 at the magnificent Palm Island Golf Club in Hui Zhou City, Guang Dong Province, China over the last two days.
The 36 Hole Stroke Play professional Pro Am event was won by Taiwan Senior Professional legend Chung Chun Hsiang. This was Chung’s second APCT victory, after also capturing last week’s Taiwan Seniors PGA & APCT co-sanctioned Nan Pao APCT Senior Open 2012 in Taiwan.
After starting the day at four under and trailing overnight leader Ahmad Bateman of Canada by one shot Chung moved into cruise control over the last day with a back to back four under 68 for a two round 8 under par total of 136.
Ahmad was coming of a previous runner up position at the recent APCT Sri Lankan Airlines Masters and should breakthrough for his maiden APCT victory soon. Back in 3rd place only one shot behind was diminutive Indonesian Soewarno, whom despite his small stature is right up there in the scoring department with the big boys at the business end of his tournaments.
This event fielded over 64 pros from 15 countries at a venue which was truly most appreciated by all players, sponsors and the media alike.
Once again, in keeping with the tour tradition US$2,500 was passed by the tour players to the local Hui Yang Society Consolidated Welfare Centre orphanage. The Title Sponsor of the tournament CPM China also matched this amount which was passed this on to the societies representatives at the tournament prize giving. The Board of CPM China were very impressed by the golf course and standard of play and will look towards making this an annual tour stop in China.
