The Countdown For APGS 2013 Has Started – It’s A Paradigm Shift

The 2013 Asia Pacific Golf Summit, the seventh in the series, is taking shape and promises to deliver a three-day conference that will take a long, hard look at the golf industry in Asia and what it needs to do to stay relevant in the rapidly changing business and recreational landscape of the new millennium.

The venue for APGS 2013 is a nation that is itself experiencing change and growth at a mind-numbing pace. Indonesia and its capital city of Jakarta will play host to this year’s conference and it will help set the tempo and mood for the event.

There is no other country in Southeast Asia that reflects the 21st Century better than Indonesia. In a nutshell, this sprawling archipelago leads the region with the following credentials:
  • Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
  • Southeast Asia’s largest population.
  • A member of the prestigious G20 group of nations.
  • Projected to be the fifth wealthiest nation on the planet by 2030.
What better setting could APGS 2013 ask for? Besides being the most dynamic country in the region, Indonesia also has a tremendous passion for golf. A passion that perhaps is only unique to this country. With more than 150 golf courses and home to some truly world class golfing facilities, the number of courses is expected to witness at least 50 new golf courses commissioned in the coming years. This is a very encouraging outlook especially when viewed against a backdrop where golf is on the decline in most of the developed world.

Given this positive outlook of the projected growth of golf in Indonesia, APGS 2013 will be assembling a line-up of world class speakers who will discuss various aspects of how the region should prepare itself to meet the challenges of the future and how to keep golf relevant and help it grow in a constantly changing environment.

The conference will kick off with a special keynote address from one of the world’s most fascinating and dynamic game-changers in business – Tony Fernandes, founder of the region’s fastest growing airline, Air Asia.

In the coming weeks and months leading to APGS 2013, new business partners and speakers will be announced and everything points to the event being different, refreshing and knowledge-driven.

Indonesia Ladies Pro Golfer Lidya Ivana Jaya Passes Away

This week the Indonesian golf community was shocked by the sad news of the passing away of Lidya Ivana Jaya. She was an outstanding golfer, underlined with her getting a tour card for the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour in 2009.

Besides her career as a ladies pro golfer she was also passionate about teaching golf to juniors, most notably at the Lydia Golf Academy in Surabaya she founded with her father.

We wish her family and friends strength to cope with this loss, and hope that her legacy will live on in all the juniors she has coached over the years.

Top Ten Finish For Rory Hie At PGM-ASEAN PGA Penang Classic

Penang, June 15 - Shaaban Hussin will celebrate his birthday tomorrow in fine style. The 33-year-old came from behind to win the PGM-ASEAN PGA Penang Classic today and did so with three strokes to spare.

With a performance that matched his career best score, the Malaysian international was bogey-free on the final day as he finished the tournament on 18-under 270. He started the fourth round at Penang Golf Resort in Bertam two shots off the lead and fired a final round seven-under 65.

The low round of the event was equaled by Mars Pucay, however, it was not enough for the Filipino, who was left to settle for a tie of second with Malaysia’s R. Nachimuthu. The latter himself closed with a 69.

In fourth spot was third round leader, Michael Tran from Vietnam. He could only muster an even-par 72, which left him a stroke further back on 14-under 274.

Arie Fauzi (68) was fifth on 276, while the Thailand duo of Atthakorn Rodrangka (67) and Nakarintra Ratanakul (71) were tied for sixth on 10-under-par.

Malaysians S. Murthy (69) and Mohd Rizal Amin (70) were joint eighth, alongside Rory Hie (70) of Indonesia on 280, one ahead of Kurnia Hershandy also from Indonesia.

Speaking after his victory, Shaaban said he felt that everything just fell into place in the final round and that he used the momentum to carry him through to the end.

Shaaban had seven birdies in all – five of them on the back nine, as he put the squeeze on to close out the tournament – and said: “I drove the ball well today and my irons were also in good shape, which gave me a lot more opportunities at birdies.

“My putting, too, was good, which meant that I buried the chances I got. I am just very happy to win it today, more so as I was two strokes back when we started the last round,” added Shaaban, who received a cheque worth RM30,000.

Nachimuthu, likewise, said he was pleased with his performance, despite not being on the winner’s podium.

“My congratulations go to Shaaban who played exceptionally well today,” Nachimuthu said graciously afterwards. “But so far as my own game goes, I am pleased with how I played this week. I could not do better than three-under in the final round, but on another day it might have been good enough to win. All the same, I am confident with the way I’m striking the ball and I’m looking forward to the Selangor Masters next week.”

Tun Ahmad Sarji, chairman of the PGM Tour, said they were delighted with the way the tournament turned out, in terms of organisation and the way it was received by the local golf community of Penang and the players.

“This event was full of positives for the PGM Tour,” said Tun Sarji. “It had a huge international field and the quality of golf was of a high standard, partly so because of the Asean PGA’s (Professional Golf Association) involvement.

“We are happy to work alongside the Asean PGA, as these tournaments go a long way to helping us develop the sport in Malaysia.

“And we are cognizant of the fact that these events are now being held around the country, as opposed to just the Klang Valley,” added Tun Sarji.

The next stop on the PGM Tour is the Satellite Tournament at Penang Golf Resort from June 17-19, followed by the RM200,000 PGM UMW Templer Park Masters (ADT) at Templer Park Country Club in Rawang, Selangor from June 26-29.

Tirto And Sindy Champions In Indonesia Junior Open Golf Championship

14-year-old junior golfer Tirto Tamardi, from East Java province, came out as champion of the Boys Division in the Indonesia Junior Open Golf Championship.

This year the annual golf championship, which is on the PB PGI official calendar and where players can win points for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), took place from 10 to 13 June 2013 at the Emeralda Golf Club, in Cimanggis-Depok.

Playing from the black tees the 8th grade junior high school students recorded a total score of 284 strokes (69-74-72-69) or below 4 under Par over the four day tournament.

Tirto Tamardi played extraordinary on the first day with a 3-under par, followed by a 2-over-par on the second day, an even par on the third day and on the fourth and final day back again posted a score of 3-under par.

Tirto managed to stay ahead of his competitors like Kevin Caesario Akbar from Pengprov PGI West Java, Peter Noble from Ancora Sport and Fadhli Soetarso Rahman (winner of the 2012 Junior National Championship) from Pengprov PGI DKI Jakarta.

Newly crowned Indonesia Junior Golf Champions Sindy Fidela (L) and Tirto Tamardi (R).

In the Girls Division, playing from the white tees, it was Sindy Fidelia, a 16-year-old athlete at the Student Training and Education Center (PPLP) of the Riau Department of Youth and Sports (DISPORA), who after scoring 5-over par on the first day, surprised with a second day score of 2-under par.

On the third and final day she was back again at 5-over par, which after three rounds was enough to be crowned champion with a total score 224 strokes (77-70-77) or 8-over par.

The success of Tirto and Sindy by winning the Indonesian Open Junior Championship 2013 is proof that the match format adopted by PB PGI is able to give birth to new champions.

At the closing ceremony on Thursday 13 June, PB PGI Secretary-General Sudrajat said in his speech that this time the match format for the Indonesian Open Junior Championship in 2013 only allowed golfers aged 13 to 17 years to compete, intending to create an equal chance for all participants to become champion, with the goal to have strong young golfers to follow in the footsteps of their seniors who already have reached the age of 18 years.

Rizal Arya, head of the junior coaching program at PB PGI sees that the opportunities to meet these targets are wide open. "We are optimistic this could happen because we are strengthened at this eventwith golfers that are already quite mature. Some of them are athletes that participated in the SEA Games," said Arya in Jakarta, Tuesday (04/06/2013).

Those predicted to achieve the best results are Joshua Andrew Wirawan (defending champion), Jordan Surya Irawan (winner 2012) and Kevin Akbar (class A Boys), as well as Tirto Tamardi, Jason Martin and Theodore Rahardja (class B).

In the Girls Division the names are Victoria Chandra and Gavrilla Christina Arya (class A Girls). Gavrilla recently won the 2013 Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open in the Girls' division.

Meanwhile a formidable opponent for the Indonesian team are the Thais, who several times have won the individual and team events at the arena. This championship has 142 participants from 19 countries, being Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, Brunei Darussalam, Guam, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, Japan, United Arab Emirates, United States, Philippines, Kazhakstan, and Hong Kong.

PB PGI Chairman Arifin Panigoro hopes that young Indonesian athletes will emerge from this championship who will shine on the world stage. "This event is not the end of their achievement. I appreciate this tournament because it is international class and this year Indonesia will face tough opponents," said Arifin.
