Tirto And Sindy Champions In Indonesia Junior Open Golf Championship

14-year-old junior golfer Tirto Tamardi, from East Java province, came out as champion of the Boys Division in the Indonesia Junior Open Golf Championship.

This year the annual golf championship, which is on the PB PGI official calendar and where players can win points for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), took place from 10 to 13 June 2013 at the Emeralda Golf Club, in Cimanggis-Depok.

Playing from the black tees the 8th grade junior high school students recorded a total score of 284 strokes (69-74-72-69) or below 4 under Par over the four day tournament.

Tirto Tamardi played extraordinary on the first day with a 3-under par, followed by a 2-over-par on the second day, an even par on the third day and on the fourth and final day back again posted a score of 3-under par.

Tirto managed to stay ahead of his competitors like Kevin Caesario Akbar from Pengprov PGI West Java, Peter Noble from Ancora Sport and Fadhli Soetarso Rahman (winner of the 2012 Junior National Championship) from Pengprov PGI DKI Jakarta.

In the Girls Division, playing from the white tees, it was Sindy Fidelia, a 16-year-old athlete at the Student Training and Education Center (PPLP) of the Riau Department of Youth and Sports (DISPORA), who after scoring 5-over par on the first day, surprised with a second day score of 2-under par.

On the third and final day she was back again at 5-over par, which after three rounds was enough to be crowned champion with a total score 224 strokes (77-70-77) or 8-over par.

The success of Tirto and Sindy by winning the Indonesian Open Junior Championship 2013 is proof that the match format adopted by PB PGI is able to give birth to new champions.

At the closing ceremony on Thursday 13 June, PB PGI Secretary-General Sudrajat said in his speech that this time the match format for the Indonesian Open Junior Championship in 2013 only allowed golfers aged 13 to 17 years to compete, intending to create an equal chance for all participants to become champion, with the goal to have strong young golfers to follow in the footsteps of their seniors who already have reached the age of 18 years.
