Westwood Set To Defend Title At The CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters Presented By PNTS
Jakarta, 11 April 2012 - England’s Lee Westwood will fly in next week to play at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS in great form after finishing tied third at the Masters Tournament last Sunday.
Westwood, whose Indonesian Masters triumph was one of four victories last season, ended his week in the year’s first Major with a four-under-par 68, and an eight-under-par 280 total, two shots behind play-off duo Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen. Watson won the Masters at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off.
The Englishman, who is ranked third in the world, was disappointed to come so close again to his maiden victory, but will certainly be fired up when he plays at the US$750,000 full-field Asian Tour event at the prestigious Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 19-22.
“Keep plugging and working out. Don't give up. I don't feel like giving up just yet,” said Westwood of his Major quest.
He said his putter let him down in crucial moments especially in dropping two bogeys in his opening three holes.
“Yeah, the story of the week is you have got to putt well to win the Masters, and I haven't putted well. Came out and missed a two-footer on the third inexplicably, and that is not the kind of thing that will give you confidence for the rest of the round.”
“So I didn't really make that many putts. The longest I made was a 10 foot on 18. I made a good one at the right time, but that's not really good enough,” he said.
Westwood’s high finish at Augusta National on Sunday was his sixth top-three finish in a Major championship since 2008. He also came close in the Masters in 2010 when he finished second.
“I keep getting in it. It's a great place to be. It's an enjoyable place to be as a professional golfer. Especially to shoot four-under on the back nine. It's the kind of response you want from yourself,” said Westwood.
Last year, Westwood produced a sterling performance on his 38th birthday to win the 2011 Indonesian Masters by three shots with his 19-under-par 269 total. It was a memorable week as victory pushed him back into the world number one spot, albeit briefly.
He went on to secure victories in Korea, South Africa and Thailand.
