Enjoy Jakarta Re-launch Ladies Indonesia Open

Jakarta, September 26 -
Enjoy Jakarta will embark on an exciting new sponsorship initiative this year by backing the Ladies Indonesia Open for the first time.

Boasting prize money of US$200,000, the Enjoy Jakarta Ladies Indonesia Open will be played at Palm Hill Golf Club in Jakarta from October 18 to 20.

An all-star cast of many of the leading lady professional golfers from Asia and Europe will compete in the ninth tournament on the 2012 Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT).

Thailand’s Nontaya Srisawang and Tiranan Yoopan, both winners of the LAGT this season, and England’s Rebecca Hudson, who has claimed three titles on the Ladies European Tour, have all confirmed they will compete.

Nontaya claimed the Ladies Thailand Open in February while Tiranan triumphed in last month’s Technology Cup in Taiwan.

Indonesia’s Lydia Ivana Jaya will lead the local challenge along with the glamorous Inez Putri - the reigning Miss Indonesia World 2012 who is also a promising golfer.

Other welcome additions to the field will be Sahra Hassan, the young golfer from Wales who in May was named UK sportswoman of the year by the Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation at Wembley Stadium.

Australian Nikki Garrett, the 2006 Rookie of the Year on the Ladies European Tour who claimed back-to-back titles in 2007, is also a starter.

“The Jakarta Capital City Government believes sponsoring an international sporting tournament of this caliber will draw significant attention to Indonesia as a whole and Jakarta in particular. It is a tremendous honour for us as we hope to showcase our nation’s rich mosaic of diverse languages, cultures and customs,” said His Excellency Dr. Ing H. Fauzi Bowo, Governor of Jakarta.

Enjoy Jakarta have sponsored the men’s Indonesia Open since 2005 and therefore their sponsorship of the ladies national Open is an extension of their sponsorship program.

“The Enjoy Jakarta Ladies Indonesia Open will be a wonderful sporting occasion and we are particularly excited to be associating ourselves with ladies professional golf which has a huge following,” added Dr. Fauzi.

The tournament will benefit hugely from regional television coverage on ESPN Star Sports as three one-hour highlight shows will be produced.

A field of 83 players will compete over three rounds with no cut being made.

The Ladies Indonesia Open was first played in 1987 when Japan’s Fusako Nagata lifted the trophy. Well known winners of the event include Lisa Hackney from England in 1995 and Australian Corinne Dibnah in 1996.

The Indonesian Golf Association (PGI) are the guardians of Ladies Indonesia Open and are looking forward to the first staging of the event since 2010.

“Ladies golf continues to capture the imagination of the golfing world and so we are thrilled that our national Open returns to the schedule in 2012. A strong field has entered and we also looking forward to seeing amateurs from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines compete,” said Arifin Panigoro, President – PGI.

The tournament is set to be one of the showpiece events on the LAGT.

“We are delighted to welcome Enjoy Jakarta, a new sponsor, to the Ladies Asian Golf Tour. Our circuit features 13 events this season and everyone is looking forward to heading to the Enjoy Jakarta Ladies Indonesia Open,” said Koichi Kato, President & Commissioner, Ladies Asian Golf Tour.

The LAGT was launched in 2005, taking over where the previously known Kasaido Ladies Asian Golf Circuit left off in 2003.

“Indonesia deserves and needs international sporting events like the Enjoy Jakarta Ladies Indonesia Open and we at GolfLink Resorts take great pleasure in being able to facilitate this process,” said Suprapto Pegeng, Marketing Director, PT Intra GolfLink, the promoter of the event and owner of Palm Hill.

Located in the Sentul highlands and near the green city of Bogor, Palm Hill’s 18 holes course was designed by Tom Matteson and developed by Japan’s Taisei Corporation.

Like all the courses in the Bogor region, the course offers marvelous views particularly of the majestic Mount Salak.

A Proud Tradition In Golf History, Caddies Are Here To Stay In Asia

In yesterday's edition of The Jakarta Globe there is an interesting piece by John Russell on the history of caddies in the game of golf, which goes almost as far back as the history of the game itself. However Rani, Indonesia's most (in)famous caddy, is suspiciously absent from this story, something future historians may want to correct.

Nevertheless the article has many interesting facts that may you can use to open up a conversation with your own caddy next time you step on the course.

Woods And McIlroy Live In Action In South East Asia

Having witnessed Lee Westwood claim the number one spot in the world golf rankings in last year’s Indonesian Masters, Indonesian golf fans most likely will have to wait quite a long time for other (former) number one golfers like Luke Donald, Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy to come to Indonesia, if ever.

Although the aforementioned guys are not coming to Indonesia’s shores, at least they can be seen in action in our neighboring countries, Singapore and Malaysia. In the months to come, golfers and golf fans from Indonesia will be in a position to see the world’s best golfers live in action right on their doorstep, starting with former number one Tiger Woods at the Mines in KL during the CIMB Classic between October 25 and 28.

Two weeks later, from November 8 to 11, Rory McIlroy, the current number one in the world, will be playing in the Barclays Singapore Open. This 6 million US dollar event will take place at Sentosa Golf Club, and will send the winner home with a healthy check of exactly 1 million US dollars. Not bad for 4 days of labor. A total of 156 players will complete including 63 from the Asian Tour and 63 from the European Tour.

If you ever dreamed of seeing the world’s top golfers live in action, here’s your chance. Jot the dates down in your agenda.

3 Club Monte - Best Ball Tournament For Juniors At Bali Handara

The next tournament of the Bali Junior Golf Community (BJGC) will be held on Sunday 23rd September 2012 9am at their 'home course' at Bali Handara Golf & Country Club.

This time it will be a 3 Club Monte - Best ball team event. Each team must consist of one junior and one Handara caddy/staff as a player. If you don’t have a caddy from Handara that you know, one will be allocated for you.

Each player must choose just three clubs plus putter to play with. Players are able to use their putter, but other than that they must stick to the other 3 clubs they choose for the entire round. This format is designed to make the game more challenging, but also to help players practice difficult shots, learn new skills, and build up their existing skills. By restricting their club choices, players can’t rely on the perfect club for a particular shot. Instead, they must made do with the clubs they’ve chosen and figure out how to use their other abilities to sink that less-than-ideal shot.

You must register for this event if you want to play. You can do this online at http://www.balijuniorgolf.com/tournament/schedule/ or call BJGC office on (0361) 462 705.

Griffin Wins In Korea On OneAsia, Rory Hie Finishes 18th

GOHAN, Korea, Sept. 9 - Australian Matthew Griffin scored the biggest win of his professional career on Sunday with a one-stroke victory at the 2012 Charity High1 Resort Open in Korea's Gangwon-do province.

The 29-year-old from Melbourne led by two overnight but held his nerve in a topsy-turvy final round for an even-par 72 that gave him a nine-under total of 279 and the winner's cheque of around U.S. $178,000.

Kang Kyung-nam (68) and Park Sang-Hyun (71), both of Korea, pushed Griffin all the way around the hilly 6,542 metre (7,148 yard) High1 Resort Country Club course, which at 1,137 metres ( 3,730 feet) is the highest golf course in Korea.

Kim Bi-o, winner of two events on the OneAsia circuit already this year, was a shot further back. His hopes of an unprecedented third OneAsia title on home soil came unstuck with two wayward shots on the par-five 13th, although he salvaged bogey with a breathtaking 60-foot putt.

"I am really, really thrilled," Griffin said after his victory. "This is what I have worked for all my life, so it is absolutely amazing to finally get there."

Griffin, once ranked the third-best amateur in the world, was a relative latecomer to the professional ranks and only scored his first four-round victory at the romantically named South Pacific Open in New Caledonia last year.

The win here propels him up the OneAsia Order of Merit and gives him a two-year exemption, but equally gives him a confidence boost to tackle Q-School on the U.S. PGA Tour at the end of the year.

"This is immense," said Griffin, a natural left hander who plays golf right-handed. "It gives me a lot of security and it also repays the faith that my supporters and sponsors have shown in me over the years."

He dedicated his victory to Peter Beck, a friend and mentor who caddied for him occasionally in his amateur and professional days, and who died in 2010.

Park, meanwhile, was left ruing another missed opportunity.

"Very disappointed, that's the only thing I feel right now," he said. "I sort of think that somehow I was meant to be second in this tournament."

Park has held or shared the final-round lead in all three Korean OneAsia events this year, but has finished second twice and fourth.

The one billion won (around U.S.$900,000) tournament - worth three times more than any other regional tour event played this week - was the sixth leg on the OneAsia calendar and the second time it has been played in Gangwon-do, which will host the 2018 Winter Olympic games.

Indonesia's best golfer Rory Hie finished on 286 for the tournament. After opening with a round of 73, two rounds of 70 got him to a share of eleventh after the third day, but a final round of 73 meant he lost a few places to finish in a shared 18th place.

The round of the day and week belonged to Q-School graduate Garrett Sapp, who fired eight birdies and an eagle - as well as a bogey and double-bogey - for a 65 that propelled him to sixth place, three shots behind the winner, and the biggest payday of his career.

The next event on OneAsia is the Nanshan China Masters from October 11-14. Kim Bi-o is the defending champion.

Scores (after round 4, par 72, 6,542-metre (7, 148-yard)):

278 - Matthew GRIFFIN (AUS) 67-70-69-72.

279 - KANG Kyung-nam (KOR) 74-70-67-68, PARK Sang-hyun (KOR) 69-71-68-71.

280 - CHOI Ho-sung (KOR) 71-68-71-70, KIM Bi-o (KOR) 72-70-67-71.

281 - Garrett SAPP (USA) 74-72-70-65, PARK Jae-kyung (KOR) 72-71-71-67, Aaron TOWNSEND (AUS) 70-69-70-72.

West Sulawesi To Have Golf Resort By 2014

Jakarta, 31 August 2012 - West Sulawesi province is going to have a luxury resort located on the island of Karang Puang that will somewhat resemble Sentosa Island in Singapore.

This was revealed by the Director of Investment and Business Development of the Sulawesi Regional Development Coordination Board, Harry Warganegara Aaron at the Indonesia International Infrastructure event held in the Jakarta Convention Center last Thursday.

"In West Sulawesi, more precisely on Karang Puang island, some 100 km from Mamuju, there will be a resort, that we propose to be a kind of Sentosa Island in Singapore," said Harry.

He added that the resort development is expected to occupy a land area of 2000 hectares, but for the early stages just 200 acres of land will be used for a hotel, golf course and water park.

"We calculated that there is around 2,000 hectares available. We will start with 200 hectares first for a hotel, a water park and golf course. It will be developed in phases," he added.

The target is the first stage of the resort will begin construction by the end of this year, with completion expected in 2014. "We hope that before 2014 everything will be ready, after groundbreaking later this year," he added.

Regarding capital, Harry mentioned that the initial investment of the project is valued at Rp 200 billion, from a consortium of foreign investors and local private companies.

"First phase is Rp 200 billion. The funding will be private. A local government-owned enterprise has the land, where the private sector will do the construction. This private investor is a consortium with a foreign partner from China and the local partner is Timbarin. The local partner wants a majority share, but that's still under negotiation," he concluded.
