All Eyes On An In-Form Mardan

Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia, June 28 - An in-form Mardan Mamat of Singapore should be the man to beat at the inaugural Taman Dayu Championship on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) next week.

Mardan is in fine form this season as he won his third Asian Tour title at the ICTSI Philippine Open in February followed by his first ADT event at the PGM CCM Impian Masters in Malaysia in the following month.

Playing on an invite, the veteran Singaporean will provide a stern challenge to the ADT rising stars when they tee off at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Taman Dayu Golf Club and Resort in Surabaya from July 4 to 7 (Wednesday to Saturday).

Peter Richardson of England, who currently leads on the ADT Order of Merit, S. Siva Chandhran of Malaysia, a two-time ADT winner and No. 1 in 2010, Kim Gi-hwan of Korea, Lam Zhiqun of Singapore and Mithun Pererra of Sri Lanka will also feature in the US$75,000 event.

Mardan, who hopes to start a golf academy in the future, has been supportive of the ADT, which is running in its third year.

“It will benefit a lot of the younger players. We need this development tour to develop the young players. This is like a platform for them to build up their game to the next level. This is good for the young players,” said the 44-year-old, who will compete in the British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes later in July.

The highly rated Taman Dayu Golf Club and Resort is a new venue on the ADT and is located in the resort area of Prigen, East Java, which is within a one-hour drive from Surabaya.

The course is part of an integrated resort that covers 600 hectares of prime land including exclusive residential homes and villas, spa, waterpark and clubhouse facilities, which include 38 hotel rooms and luxurious villa accommodation along the golf course.

Among other players who will make their way to the latest ADT event include Singaporeans Quincy Quek and Koh Deng Shan, Gavin Flint of Australia and Kenneth De Silva of Malaysia.

The Taman Dayu Championship, which is promoted by the Asian Golf Group, will be the fifth stop on the 2012 ADT Schedule, which will boasts of a record 12 events this season. The top three players on the Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn Asian Tour cards for 2013.

Some Of Asia's Best Step Up To The Plate To Share Their Success Formulas

Never before has the club sector of the golf industry in Asia enjoyed so much prominence. The 2012 Asia Pacific Golf Summit is going to see to it that the golf club business is going to be really show-cased when the conference rolls into the Royal Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam in December.

The last thirty years have witnessed the construction of world class golf courses throughout the Asian continent. Many of these courses have now become legendary for a variety of reasons.

For the 2012 Summit, the organisers have pre-selected three golf clubs to be featured on the programme.

The three clubs are:
Each of these clubs has a distinct story to tell and a valuable experience to share with their peers in Asia. The success story of Black Mountain will be narrated by its general manager, Harald Elisson. Harald's course has played host to the Black Mountain Masters, one of the region's most successful professional tournaments and the 2010 Royal Trophy clash between Team Europe and Team Asia.

From Indonesia, we check out the highly successful and award-winning Royale Jakarta Golf Club, home to the prestigious Indonesian Masters. Come and meet the affable and personable golf-loving George Chandra, the club's chief operating officer. George will walk the Summit through what makes his club tick.

Finally, from the beautiful resort belt of northern Thailand, there is the exquisite Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort. It's success story will be told by Woranon Samakoses, the managing director of this sprawling facility.

"This is definitely a first for the Summit and for Asia - to have top flight club executives share their management practices and philosophies with their industry peers. We hope that this serves as a fore-runner to similar presentations from other Asian golf clubs in future," said Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, the owner and producer of the Summit.

Bayron And Siva Eye Success At Taman Dayu Championship

Pasuruan, East Java - Jay Bayron of the Philippines and Malaysian S. Siva Chandhran will be aiming for glory at the inaugural Taman Dayu Championship on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) next month.

Bayron and Siva, who have won a combined three ADT titles, will be among a strong line-up of players set for the US$75,000 event at the highly rated Taman Dayu Golf Club and Resort in Surabaya from July 4 to 7 (Wednesday to Saturday).

Current ADT Order of Merit leader Peter Richardson of England and Luke Bleumink of Australia, both winners on the ADT this season, will also be in the field with the aim of moving closer to an Asian Tour card, which is awarded to the top-three finishers on the Order of Merit at the end of the season.

The Taman Dayu Golf Club and Resort is located in the resort area of Prigen, East Java, which is within a one‐hour drive from Surabaya.

The championship course is most impressive and is a creation of golfing great, Jack Nicklaus. The course is part of an integrated resort that covers 600 hectares of prime land including exclusive residential homes and villas, spa, waterpark and clubhouse facilities, which include 38 hotel rooms and luxurious villa accommodation along the golf course.

Bayron claimed his first ADT title last season with an emphatic home triumph at the Aboitiz Invitational. He currently lies in tied 15th place on the Merit list, courtesy of a tied fifth place at the PGM CCM Impian Masters in Malaysia.

The slightly‐built Siva has enjoyed great success since the ADT’s inauguration in 2010 where he won the inaugural Order of Merit.

He is a two‐time ADT winner, claiming victories in 2010 and 2011, and he will be hoping to notch a third title at the Taman Dayu Championship.

He said winning the Order of Merit has given him the opportunity to expand his career. “I had more opportunities to play in the bigger events which gave me an entire different experience by playing on different courses around the region. I also gained a lot more confidence that has helped my game,” said the Malaysian.

The ADT was created in 2010 as a platform for young talents to enhance their game.

This year the ADT will host a total of 10 events, with another two more expected to join the fledging Tour in the coming months.

The top three players on the Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn Asian Tour cards for 2013.

The Golf Club Experience... Has It Gone AWOL?

Club management and the delivery of the club experience will come under scrutiny at the 2012 Asia Pacific Golf Summit to be held in the oil-rich Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam on December 11-13.

This is an issue that has been widely talked about, discussed and hotly debated by patrons of golf clubs and club owners and operational personnel. If one is to look back over the years, the so-called "glory days" of golf in Asia, quality of service was of paramount importance. The delivery of service was also a matter that many golf clubs took great pride in. However, based on feedback, these once hallowed standards of service seem to have been in a state of decline. It must be pointed out though that there are still many golf clubs in Asia who strive for very high standards, although there are many who don't share these same ideals.

In an environment where efforts are on-going to grow the game of golf, how important is service and its role in delivering the club experience?

This matter will be cross-examined by a high-powered panel of experts led by Kurt Michelsen, General Manager of Cengkareng Golf Club and the former Asia Pacific Vice President for Troon Golf.

The panel will be made up of:
RISHI NARAIN – Managing Director, Rishi Narain Golf Management (India)
PETER DOWNIE – General Manager, Sentosa Golf Club (Singapore)
NEIL COULSON – Director of Operations, IMG Golf Course Services (China)
CLIVE CARPENTER – Managing Director, Golf Today Network (London)

"We are asking some very pointed questions of the industry. By and large, the club spirit, experience and camaraderie that golf was once known to uphold seems to be in a state of decline especially in clubs in Asia," explained Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, owner and product of the Summit.

If you are a golf club owner, operator, general manager or a business executive involved in growing the club experience, make sure that you block out the dates now! December 11 - 13, 2012.

The Sultanate of Brunei will roll out the red carpet to welcome you to a truly peaceful abode!

Maybank Commits To New ADT Event In Indonesia

Kuala Lumpur, June 22 - Maybank, Malaysia’s regional financial leader, has taken on title sponsorship of a new Asian Development Tour (ADT) tournament in Indonesia. The move is part of the Bank’s commitment in supporting the development of sports across the region where it operates.

The BII Maybank ADT Challenge will be launched at Imperial Klub Golf in Jakarta from July 12 to 14, 2012 with a total prize fund of US$50,000. It will be the first time Maybank is sponsoring a tournament on the burgeoning ADT, which was introduced in 2010 as a secondary circuit in Asia to provide playing opportunities for rising stars to hone their skills before they feature on the elite Asian Tour.

Maybank is already involved with professional golf at the highest level in Asia through its successful title sponsorship of the US$2.5 million Maybank Malaysian Open, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

Mohd Adam Wee Abdullah, Chief Marketing Officer, Maybank said: “We are proud to begin a new association with the ADT as we share the same goals with the Asian Tour to grow the game across the region.

“Following the success of the Maybank Malaysian Open, which we began the title sponsorship in 2006, we felt the timing was right to invest in the game at the development level, hence the birth of our new ADT event in Indonesia.

“Our extensive business presence across Southeast Asia presents a wonderful opportunity for Maybank to further expand our golf sponsorship programme and we are excited at the prospect of being involved in grooming new champions on the ADT.”

At the end of every season, the ADT rewards the top-three finishers on the Order of Merit with cards on the Asian Tour in the following year. In the inaugural year, five tournaments were staged while eight were played in 2011.

With the addition of the Maybank event, which will be held over three rounds, this season’s ADT calendar will rise to an all-time high of 12 tournaments.

Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han welcomed Maybank’s commitment to the ADT.

“On behalf of the Asian Tour, I would like to welcome Maybank as our newest title sponsor on the Asian Development Tour. Maybank’s strong involvement and support has been tremendous over the years and we are truly delighted that it will also now support the ADT,” said Han.

“The ADT plays a crucial role in the development of golfers in Asia and the addition of a new tournament in Indonesia will be welcomed by the Indonesian players as it will give them greater opportunities to compete in our events.”

A total of three ADT events have been held so far this season with newcomer Peter Richardson of England, winner of the PGM ADT Masters at A’Famosa in Malaysia earlier this month, leading the Order of Merit.

Indonesia Claims Boys Title At Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship

Jakarta, 9 June 2012 - The Indonesian contingent is quite satisfied with winning the individual title in the Boys division, while Thailand took the Boys Team title in the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship at Damai Indah Golf, Pantai Indah Kapuk course, Jakarta, Friday.

Indonesia's Joshua Andrew Wirawan won the Boys individual class at the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship 2012 (EJWJGC), finishing one stroke ahead of Thailand's Dantha Boonma.

Joshua recorded a total of 287 strokes, or one under par (74-76-67-69), during the four-day EJWJGC 2012 .

Meanwhile Danthai scored an even par 288 (71-77-71-69), and had to settle for second place.

"I am pleased to win this championship for the first time," said Joshua after the EJWJGC 2012 closing ceremony at Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, Friday.

"Previously I would not expect to win in this championship, given our competitors from Thailand and Australia are strong enough," he said.

"I played freely, not influenced by having to win, just wanted to play well," he added.

But overall, Thailand remains the king of the junior tournaments in Indonesia. They collected the Boys Team title with partners Danthai Boonma Putra and Sarit Suwannarut, and in addition brought home five titles in Boys' Class A, B, C and D and Girls' Class C competitions.

Meanwhile Japan won two titles, as Yu Okamura and I Aono brought home the Girls' Team title, while Yu Okamura also took the Girls' Class A title.

Girls' Class B was won by Cheng Chia Ssu from China Taipei, and Class D by Malaysia's Natasha Andrea Oon.

In Boys Class B, Sarit Suwannarut was unstoppable, leading from the first day. The Thai golfer finished the tournament with the title in age group 13-14 years. Although he closed the final day with a score of two over par (74), Sarin's position was not challenged, totaling a score of 290 (73, 73, 70, 74) or two over par.

Meanwhile, Yuwa Kosaihira of Japan had to settle for second place. Despite some impressive play by scoring four strokes under par on Thursday (7/6) and potentially displacing Sarin, on the final day Yuwa only scored 75, and collected 292 total points (74, 75, 68, 75), or two strokes behind Sarin.

The third place was taken by Malaysia's Rosidin Emilio Solomon who suddenly thrust into third place, displacing Cao Sen of Taiwan. Solomon finished with a total score of 301 (81, 77, 71, 72).
