Bali Golf & Country Club Closes For Major Renovation

In a short period of time Bali Golf & Country Club will be celebrating the conclusion of 21 years of operations , having opened on March 4, 1991.
Anywhere in the world golf courses with such a heritage begin to require some redesign and modernization and Bali Golf & Country Club is not exempt from those needs.

As part of an overall redevelopment plan to rename the property as the Bali National Golf Resort, the first phase of the redevelopment plan will be major renovations to the golf course, which will be increased in length from the tournament tees to 7,200+ yards, together with new green's complexes on all holes and new club facilities, which will enhance the golfing experience for all resort guests.

These renovations mean the golf course must be closed for a period of time, so as to enable the upgrading of the golf course, together with the new clubhouse, which will result in Bali's best located and favorite golf resort, being of the 5 star standards expected of the best golf courses in both Asia and the World today.

Because of this effective February 16, 2012 Bali Golf & Country Club, Nusa Dua will be closed until further notice.

All golfers will be welcomed back on the greens and fairways of Bali National Golf Resort in early 2013.

Asia Pacific Golf Summit Heads To Oil-Rich Sultanate Of Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), January 26 - The 2012 Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS) will be staged in the oil-rich state of Brunei. European golfing legend Colin Montgomerie will be among the keynote speakers at the sixth edition of the Summit, now firmly established as one of the world’s leading business gatherings for the golf industry.

The luxurious, six-star Empire Hotel and Country Club will be the venue for the three-day Summit, from December 11-13. The facility, with its Jack Nicklaus-designed course, is a two-time winner of the Best Golf Resort in Asia Pacific category in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards.

The participation of Montgomerie, an eight-time European Tour Order of Merit champion and captain of Europe’s triumphant Ryder Cup team in 2010, is certain to add spice to the occasion.

Montgomerie will now join that illustrious list. ‘Monty’, as he is popularly known, has had a spectacular career, including a streak of seven consecutive Order of Merit successes from 1993 to 1999, and 31 European Tour victories, placing him fourth on the all-time list. His career high world ranking was second.

He’s enjoyed plenty of success in Asia with wins in the Macau Open, Hong Kong Open and Singapore Masters, among others. In recent years, he’s begun to make a name for himself as a promising course designer. Arguably his finest work has come at The Montgomerie Links in Danang, voted Best Course in Vietnam for the past two years in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards.

Moving to the Sultanate of Brunei, a new dimension will be added to the 2012 APGS as it will be staged in conjunction with the Royal Trophy, the inter-continental team match play challenge between eight-strong line-ups from Asia and Europe. Featuring teams captained by Japan’s Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki and Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal, the sixth Royal Trophy will take place from December 14-16, directly after the Summit.

Sebastian said: “By staging these two world-class events together, we are actually creating an unmatched golf spectacle of global proportions – the coming together of the best in a golf business event and a golf tournament.”

Jakarta, 26 January 2012 - The Indonesia Professional Golfers' Association / Persatuan Golfers Profesional Indonesia (Indonesia PGA/PGPI) held their annual Appreciation Night at Senayan Driving Range, Jakarta to celebrate the best players of 2011 as well as reward those who supported Indonesia PGA efforts during the 2011 season.

The evening was opened with the announcement and unveiling of a new name and logo, chosen to better reflect the mission and vision of the organization moving forward.

Next up were words of thanks to all who supported professional golf in Indonesia during 2011 and Appreciation Awards where given to key supporters in four categories.

Ian Woosnam And Michael Campbell Confirmed For Indonesian Masters

January 26, Jakarta: Ian Woosnam and Michael Campbell have confirmed their participation in Indonesia's most prestigious golf tournament, the Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS in April.

This announcement was made during a press conference held today at the Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta, the Official Hotel for the Indonesian Masters.

The early confirmation of Woosnam and Campbell is a huge boost for the Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS with Lee Westwood and Thongchai Jaidee also set to grace the fairways of Royale Jakarta Golf Club from April 19-22, 2012.

Westwood claimed a memorable victory in the inaugural edition on the Asian Tour last year which coincided with his 38^th birthday and a return to the world's number one position, albeit briefly.

SERIES BRINGS OPPORTUNITY TO INDONESIA FOR FIFTH YEAR

17 January 2012: Cahyo "Bobby" Adhitomo fired a brilliant four under par total of 140 over two rounds at the Damai Indah Golf BSD Course to win the fifth Faldo Series Indonesia Championship and qualify for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China.

"This was my third Faldo Series so I am thrilled to finally win it and book my trip to the Grand Final," said the champion from Jakarta who went into the final round as joint leader. "I was shaking with nerves this morning and double-bogeyed the first hole, so I'm proud of the way I turned it around to win."

With two rounds of 70, Adhitomo won by three shots from 17-year-old Kow Elki and by four from defending champion Fahmi Reza, 20, in the Boys' Under-21 division. Better known as Bobby, the 19-year-old will now travel to Mission Hills Golf Club in China for the sixth Grand Final, to be hosted by six-time Major winner Sir Nick Faldo on March 14-16.

The other age-group champions celebrating a place in the World Amateur Golf Ranking event at Mission Hills in Shenzhen were Elki (Boys' Under-18), Jordan Surya Irawan (Boys' Under-16), Gianti Mahardika (Girls' Under-21) and Victoria Chandra (Girls' Under-16).

50 of the country's top young golfers competed in the fifth edition of the Indonesia Championship in Jakarta, which also featured a seminar on sports psychology for players and parents. 50 younger children from the local community attended the tournament to receive free golf instruction and watch the competitors in action.

Established in 1996, 37 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 27 countries worldwide with more than 5,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

The Faldo Series Asia is supported by major partners ISPS, Mission Hills and The R&A, official golf wear partner UFL and official suppliers TaylorMade and Tricor. It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation (APGC).

Sanjay Sondhi, country director, Visit Indonesia Tourism Office pointed out that since the outbound market is growing from India and Indians are looking for new destinations, Indonesia is therefore a natural choice as it is a new destination in South East Asia. “Indonesia has over 17,508 Islands to offer to the Indian traveller. Hence there is a potential for Indonesia to be a repeat destination for Indian tourists. We are hoping for Garuda Indonesia to start direct flight from India as this will make accessibility much easier for the Indian outbound travellers,” said Sondhi. Indian travellers to Indonesia have been showing a year on year growth in numbers - in 2010 as many as 145,000 Indians had travelled to Indonesia and in 2011 the number is expected to touch 160,000. Visit Indonesia Tourism Office is doubling its promotional activities in India in 2012. It is also looking at targeting cites like Ahmedabad and Kolkata besides other tier II and tier III cities like Surat, Pune, etc. “Both the countries have two factors in common- culture and friendliness, hence Indonesia is a natural draw destination for the Indian traveller,” said Sondhi.

Indonesia has been traditionally a popular destination for honeymooners from India, but now Visit Indonesia Tourism Office is very focused on promoting the country as a MICE destination and the wedding tourism segment. “We have seen a good increase in the MICE segment this year and will continue to focus on this segment. Thousands Observe Tsunami At Seulawah Golf Club

Aceh Besar, 26 December 2011 - Thousands of people gathered at Seulawah Golf Club in the city of Lho'nga, Aceh Besar regency in Indonesia's Aceh to observe seven years of major tsunami disaster in the province that claimed hundreds of thousands lives.

People who observed the tsunami disaster incited by a 8.9 magnitude earthquake in the Indian ocean off Aceh province on December 26, 2004 solemnly delivered prayers for the victims of tsunami that reached more than 200,000 people.

Lho'nga was among several cities in Indonesia's northernmost province of Aceh hit the most by the tsunami. Eighty percent of the city's population perished in the tsunami, the Antara news service reported.

The observance ceremony on the golf course was attended by thousands of students, civil servants, the military as well as Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf.

Tourists and the scholars from Japan also took part in the observance. The scholars distributed yellow papers for those attending the observance, encouraged them to express their feeling on the deadly tsunami disaster.

OneAsia Raises The Bar Further With 2012 Schedule

Hong Kong, December 20: OneAsia's ascendency will continue in 2012 with an expanded schedule featuring at least 14 events, three of them new tournaments, and an overall purse of nearly US$16 million.

An impressive line-up of million dollar events, including five national Opens, will be staged starting with the US$1 million Indonesia Open, to be played from March 15 to 18.

OneAsia will also welcome on board for the first time, the China Classic, the Guangzhou Open and the PGA Championship of Malaysia.

The Guangzhou event will be the final tournament of the season and be staged from December 13 to 16.

Returning to the schedule having successfully been staged in 2011 are Korea's three leading events the Kolon Korea Open, the GS Caltex Maekyung Open and the SK Telecom Open.

The Nanshan China Masters, the Thailand Open and the Volvo China Open, joint sanctioned with The European Tour, will also be back in 2012.

OneAsia will once again head to Australia for the Emirates Australian Open and the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola.

The dates for the two Australian events, the Kolon Korea Open and the Nanshan tournament will be confirmed shortly.

The High 1 Resort Open in Korea, which had to be cancelled this year due to inclement weather, will also be held next season as will the Dongfeng Nissan Cup, a team event between Asia Pacific and China.

This exciting new team tournament was inaugurated at the weekend and saw Asia Pacific beat China by a single point at Tycoon Golf Club in Shenzhen.

"We have been able to increase our number of events and prize money in 2012 which is something we have done every season since we started OneAsia in 2009. We had five events in that first year, held 10 tournaments in 2010, and featured 11 this season. It has been a rapid growth which provides endless opportunities to our members," said Sang Y. Chun, Commissioner and Chairman, OneAsia.

Added Chun: "OneAsia was founded by the PGA of Australia, the China Golf Association, the Korea Golf Tour and the Korea Golf Association and we are delighted that our schedule features tournaments spread across all of the respective regions. The 2011 OneAsia season came to an exciting conclusion earlier this month when Australian Greg Chalmers won the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola. The lefthander also won the Emirates Australian Open to become the first player to win back-to-back titles on OneAsia.

American Tiger Woods competed in the Emirates Australian Open contributing to record television ratings and the attendance of nearly 70,000 spectators during the week.

Andre Stolz from Australia claimed the OneAsia Order of Merit title. He earned US$464,811 in nine events, including victories in the Indonesia PGA Championship and Thailand Open, with Korean Kim Kyung-tae in second place after banking US$327,178.

With an exciting and lucrative year of tournament golf ahead in 2012 the OneAsia Qualifying School has been inundated with entrants.

The Qualifying School's First Stages are taking place this month and in January in Melbourne, Australia, and in the States of Johor and Sabah, Malaysia.

Competitors will head to the Final Stage which will be held at the prestigious Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

A total of 144 players will compete for over 20 OneAsia cards through four rounds of golf from January 10 to 13.

8 December 2011: Fahmi Reza will be targeting a successful defense of his title when the fifth Faldo Series Indonesia Championship returns to Damai Indah Golf’s BSD Course on January 16-17, 2012. The 20-year-old from Jakarta followed last year’s six-shot victory with a top-20 finish in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, the best performance by an Indonesian in the 80-strong field.

Reza will join more than 70 of his country’s leading golfers aged 12 to 21 in the 2012 Indonesia Championship at the BSD Course in Jakarta. With the field divided into five age-groups – three for boys and two for girls – the winner of each division over two rounds will join Sir Nick Faldo for the sixth Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in China on March 14-16, 2012.

In a bid to further support golf development in Indonesia, competitors will also receive expert advice from guest speakers during the tournament, while an audience of younger children from the local community will receive free golf instruction and then watch the competitors in action.

The 2011/2012 Faldo Series Asia schedule features 17 tournaments in 13 different countries including five in mainland China plus others in The Philippines, Vietnam, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Pakistan, Thailand and Indonesia.

For the past 12 years, through our website indogolf.com, Golf Promo Indonesia has been actively and globally promoting Indonesia’s fabulous world of golf and leisure, which also includes Indonesia’s hospitality and spa industry as well as its rich and diverse world of art and culture. Our website attracts more than 55,000 visitors a month.

Globally, golf tourism is a US$30 billion industry (2011 figures). In Asia, Thailand attracts roughly 200,000 foreign golfers each year, while Indonesia attracts no more than 5,000.

In Asia, Thailand is the undisputed leader, and earns more than $500 million in revenues from inbound golf tourism. Knowing all that, for the past 12 years we have attempted to create synergy and cooperation between us and the Ministry of Tourism, but these attempts have been unsuccessful so far.

Lately and ever since your appointment as Indonesia’s new minister for tourism, much has been said about boosting tourism in Indonesia and making it one of the main contributors to Indonesia’s economy.

In an article printed in The Jakarta Post on Nov. 22, 2011, on boosting tourism, it was stated that to support tourism development a total of $13.74 billion was needed. Given what we know about Thailand’s inbound golf industry, one important sector that could boost tourism (and hard currency income) could definitely be inbound golf travel to Indonesia.

Moreover, with perfect infrastructure in place, not much money has to be spent on the development of such and improving ways of getting foreign golfers to our fabulous courses.

For the past three weeks, daily and relentlessly, I have tried to contact your office in order to request an audience to discuss with you sustainable and affordable plans to promote Indonesia as one of the world’s best golf destinations.

Getting past your electronic telephone operator, however, has turned out to be utterly impossible and in the end, and after three weeks, I have had to give up. Therefore, allow me to (respectfully) approach you through this open letter.

With hard work, together we can do a lot in the coming three years. What we ask from you is to give us a chance to present to you our elaborate plans with respect to the promotion of Indonesia as the world’s next golf destination. Local Players Must Sell Themselves Better: Asian Tour Official

Indonesian golfers risk losing their wild cards into Asian Tour events if they don’t compete in at least 15 tournaments next season, an official said on Tuesday.

The Asian Tour began providing Indonesian golfers a wild card into its tournaments in 1995, adding a second one last year.

“[The Asian Tour] has 28 tournaments throughout the year, but we rarely see Indonesian players in those tournaments,” Irfan Hamid, Asian Tour senior manager for tour development, said on Tuesday at a news conference in Jakarta for the 2012 Indonesian Masters.

“We hope Indonesian golfers will play in at least 15 tournaments next season or we will consider not giving them two wild cards.”

The other path into Asian Tour-sanctioned events is by earning a tour card at Qualifying School, which takes place on Jan. 11 to 21 in Hua Hin, Thailand.

Rory Hie was the only Indonesian to compete in Asian Tour events this year. He finished ninth at the Indonesian Masters in April but then failed to make the cut at this month’s Singapore Open and Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia.

Rory, who won the Tangshan China PGA Championship in September to become the first Indonesian golfer to win an international tournament outside his home country, played in 13 Asian Tour events in 2010.

Hamid said the dearth of Indonesian golfers was because they struggled to find sponsors.

“The PGPI [Indonesian Professional Golfers Association] should help them find sponsors,” he said. “They don’t know how to sell themselves. No one guides them. There are a lot of sponsors out there. These guys need to find them and the PGPI needs to educate them because it’s all about the value of the players.”

PGPI chairman Syafei Asnap admitted that a lack of sponsors was a primary problem in Indonesia’s golf development.

“Players have tried to find sponsors by themselves. The PGPI will start being actively involved in helping the players, and I think we have a good chance because lots of PGPI officials are entrepreneurs,” he said.

“Now that the Asian Tour has given its warning, we’ll pay close attention to this matter. We don’t want to lose the wild cards.”

Indonesian Masters organizers confirmed on Tuesday that world No. 3 and defending champion Lee Westwood would play in the 2012 event, which will take place on April 19 to 23 at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Asian Tour star Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, the only player to win the tour’s Order of Merit title three times, and Rory also confirmed they would compete in the $750,000 tournament.

“I am excited to return to the Indonesian Masters. I came in second this year and I hope to walk away with the trophy next year. I will continue to play in as many Asian Tour events as I can as the Tour has helped me build my career to what it is today,” Thongchai said in a statement.

After keeping golf fans throughout Indonesia on edge for days, eventually the host golf team exceeded expectations at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia 2011, which ended on Thursday (17/11) on the New Course Jagorawi Golf & Country Club.

Indonesia's ladies golfer Tatiana came out as champion and won an individual gold medal after a play-off against Pinrath L from Thailand with a total score of 217 (74-74-69). Pinrath had to settle for a silver medal while Dottie Ardina (Philippines) got the bronze medal.

The hosts ladies golf team, consisting of Tatiana, Juriah and Ika Woro Palupi, also won the gold medal in ladies team event number with a total score of 439.

Meanwhile, the two gold medals in the men's division went to Thailand, with the men's individual's gold taken by Rattanon from Thailand, with a total score of 2 under (75-68-73-70), and the men's team gold medal for the Thai team consisting of Rattanon, Natiphong, Chanachok and Poom.S with a total score of 865. Individual silver medal was taken by Natipong S (Thailand) with a score of 290 (70-75-72-73) and bronze medals won by George Gandranata (Indonesia) with a score of 291 (70-81-70-70).

Indonesia's men's golf team consisting of George Gandranata, Ian Andrew, and Suprapto Rinaldi won the silver medal team event with a total score of 873.

Malaysia Leads After First Day Of SEA Games Ladies Golf

Jakarta, Indonesia — With rivals hell bent on dethroning them, the defending champion Philippines’ Chihiro Ikeda, Andrea Unson and Dottie Ardina found themselves trailing by five against current leader Malaysia in the opening round of women’s golf competition in the 26th Southeast Asian Games.

It’s a crowded top four with only single-digit leads separating the teams. Malaysia is off to a fine start with 142 followed by Thailand (143), Singapore (144), and the Philippines (147).

Ikeda and Ardina are no strangers to this kind of situation. Call it a déjà vu of sorts but this is the same story line that happened in the first day in the 2009 Laos SEAG in Vientiane. Eventually, they caught fire in the last two days to capture the gold team and individual medals.

In fact, the managers and coaches of Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and host Indonesia know too well that the Philippines have the strongest team coming here and are even more dangerous when their backs are against the wall, especially with high-caliber players like Ikeda and Ardina.

“I expect the ladies to bounce back in a big way on Wednesday. There will only be a few adjustments as they played decent rounds today," said national coach Bong Lopez.

Lopez’s major adjustment would focus on limiting mistakes on specific holes where the trio recorded a combined five double-bogeys at the narrow, tree-lined fairways of the Jagorawi Golf and Country Club’s New Course.

Ikeda paced with an even 72, highlighted by three birdies on Nos. 1, 3 and 10. She got into trouble on the 12th where she had a double bogey and on the 13th for her only bogey.

Unson, a first-time in the SEA Games, added a 75 in the three-to-play, two-to-count format as she accounted for the PHL’s 147 total. Dottie Ardina, the third member, managed a 76.

Malaysia, meanwhile, leaned on the two-under 70 of Kelly Tan and the 72 of Aretha Pan. Thailand’s Pinrath Loonboonruang also made a 70 and was backed up by Pannita’s 73. Koh Sock Hwee shot the day’s best of 69 while Amelia Yong added a 75 for Singapore.

In the men’s division, powerhouse Thailand overtook Indonesia for the lead after the second round even as the Philippines stayed in fourth place in the competition also played at Jagorawi.

Rupert Zaragosa, the many-time Junior World champion, churned out a one-under 71 to spearhead the Philippines campaign. Jobim Carlos and Art Arbole each returned with a 74 that gave the country a 219 for the day and 242 in 36 holes.

Filipino pint-sized golfer Rupert Zaragosa played steadily with an even 72 despite the New Course’s narrow fairways, fast greens and tall roughs for the Philippines, which finished third in the 2009 Laos SEA Games in Vientiane.

Jobim Carlos, who was expected to score heavily, struggled in the early holes, making a double bogey on the 13th and bogeys on 14th and 16th. He birdied the 17th then added three more on three of five holes at the turn that gave him a 74.

Art Arbole was actually on his way to a good round until he got busted with a horrible 9 on the par-5 eighth hole. His drive sliced to the right and went out-of-bounds then on his third shot, he missed on the ball completely on his chip but was still assessed as a stroke that added to his woes.

Still Arbole made it to the scoring column format (four-to-play, three-to-count) with a 77.

Thailand had a 218 on the 70 of Natipong Srithong, 73 of Poom Saksansin and 75 of Chanachock D. Malaysia was led by Low Khai Jei’s 70 followed by Kenneth de Silva’s 73 and Muhammad Arie’s 79.

Thai Golfers Target Three Of Four Golds In Jakarta

Thailand's golf chief aims to win three of the four gold medals that are available at the SEA Games.

The Thai squad are expected to win in the men's individual and team events and the women's individual competition. "I have confidence in three events particularly the men's competitions," Rungsrid Luxitanond, president of the Thailand Golf Association, said yesterday.

"Every man is in good form and can win gold if they can play to their standard during the tournament."

In the men's team, Thailand made a late change with Chanachoke Aphirattanamongkol replacing Nattawat Suvajanakorn who is injured.

The other three men are Poom Saksansin, Natipong Srithong and Rattanon Wannasrichan.

The women's team feature Pinrat Loomboonruang, Panitta Yusabai and Pavarisa Yoktuan.

"In the women's event, Pinrat is one of the favourites to win the women's individual title," Rungsrid said.

"In the women's team competition, the Philippines and Indonesia are the teams to beat."

Thailand coach Gerry Norquist said his players were fit physically and mentally and that any of his men could win the individual title.

But he refused to predict how many gold medals his squad would win as this could put extra pressure on himself and the athletes.

Instead, he said he would try to motivate them to win in every event.

"Rungsrid's prediction will not put us under pressure," said the American who has been with the team since November 2009.

It is difficult to predict golf results because it is a battle between players and the course, he said.

Singpapore and the Philippines could be Thailand's toughest opponents in the men's and women's events respectively while Indonesia could be a surprise package thanks to home field advantage, Norquist said.

The golf tournament will be held at Jagorawi Country Club in Jakarta. The Thai team will fly to Indonesia on Friday.

Thailand swept all four gold medals at the 24th SEA Games on home soil in Nakhon Ratchasima in 2007 and took two golds and two silvers at the previous tournament in Laos in 2009.

Thai Wisut Wins Again, Rory Finishes 4th At Sabah Masters

KOTA KINABALU: Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat claimed the US$60,000 Sabah Masters yesterday to become the first player to win four times on the Asean PGA Tour and also the first golfer to claim back-to-back titles.

Wisut recorded a one-stroke victory over Filipino Anthony Fernando and Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung at the Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club to add to his success in last month’s Palembang Musi Championship in Indonesia.

The 30-year-old fired a four-under 66 for a two-under 278 total. He had started the final round three shots behind leader Fernando but stormed into the lead with a brilliant front nine of four-under 32, which included birdies on the first two holes.

Fernando carded a 70 while Fung, who started with a costly double bogey seven, came in with a 69. Indonesian Rory Hie and Thai Tanatchan Puaktes shared fourth place.

“I’m delighted and very excited after winning my first back-to-back titles as a professional. Everything came together for me today, every part of my game worked well and I stayed calm and focused,” said Wisut, who won US$9,750.

He moved to the top of the Order of Merit with earnings of US$23,092

“It is definitely a confident booster ahead of my trip to Australia next week for the Australian Open. A world class field will gather there and after these two wins, I believe that I can get a good result Down Under,” said Wisut.

The Ministry of Tourism & Creative Economy for the Republic of Indonesia reports that during the first six months of 2011, U.S. visitors to the country increased 7.4 percent from 85,385 to 91,569 over the same period last year.

CIMB To Send Budding Juniors For Stint In America

Kuala Lumpur, 29 October 2011: The CIMB Foundation will send eight of the region’s top junior golfers for an overseas training stint in the United States in December.

This is part of the CIMB junior golf development programme in the ongoing CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia.

The juniors – four boys and four girls – will be from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

They are Paul San and Sarfina Seretharan (Malaysia); Putri Aisyah Amani and Joshua Andrew Wirawan (Indonesia); Puwit Anupansuebsai and Savitree Thavong (Thailand); and Caleb Ng and Rachel Cheang (Singapore).

Westwood To Defend Indonesia Title

World number two Lee Westwood has confirmed he will return to defend his title at the Indonesian Masters held at Royale Jakarta Golf Club next April.

The Englishman claimed a memorable victory in the inaugural edition on the Asian Tour earlier this year which coincided with his 38th birthday and a return to the world's number one position, albeit briefly.

His early confirmation is a huge boost for the Indonesian Masters which is growing immensely following its launch this year. The second edition of the tournament will be held from April 19 to 22, 2012.

"I am delighted to confirm that I will be back to Royale Jakarta to defend my Indonesian Masters presented by PNTS title," said Westwood, who holds 34 international victories in his illustrious career.

Wisut Cruises To Palembang Win

Palembang, Indonesia, October 16: Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat handled the pressure of leading going into the final round of the US$75,000 Palembang Musi Championship today with consummate ease by strolling to a five stroke victory.

Ahead by one at the start of the day he proved to be uncatchable as he fired a bogey free six-under-par 66 at Palembang Golf Club.

He finished with an impressive four-round aggregate of 17-under-par 271.

Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung took second place after shooting a 69 while a stroke further back were Jay Bayron from the Philippines and Thailand’s Supravee Phatam.

Bayron stormed through with a 64 while Supravee returned 67.

It is Wisut’s third victory on the ASEAN PGA Tour and the US$12,111 winners’ cheque moved him up to third on the Order of Merit from 43rd. The huge leap also puts him into prime position to qualify for the US$6 million Barclays Singapore Open as the top seven from the Merit list as of November 6 make it through.

“I felt relaxed and just focused on what I had to do and nothing else. This win puts me on track to be able to work towards playing like this in the big events in the region. I am really happy,” said Wisut.

He made six birdies including on 17 and 18. The only real concern during his round came on the par-four 17th where after a stray tee shot he had to chip sideways into the fairway. Remarkably he then holed his third shot from the fairway to put one hand firmly on the trophy.

“I didn’t panic on 17. I deliberately chipped out so that I only had 50 yards left which is a distance I am very comfortable with. Holing it was a bit of luck though,” added the 29 year old from Bangkok.

On the par-four 18th he finished off in style after nailing his second shot to four feet.

Wisut is a proven winner having won the Thailand PGA Championship last year and in 2008 he won the Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam and the Mercedes-Benz Masters Philippines on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

He turned professional in 2006 after enjoying a distinguished amateur career which saw him claim the individual and team titles in the 2005 Putra Cup.

Playing partner Fung tried valiantly to catch Wisut and was two shots behind at the turn.

However it was not to be and a bogey on the final hole saw him slip further behind.

“I wasn’t feeling well at the start of the week. I had a stomach upset and nearly pulled out so I really am happy to finish second,” said Fung who won US$8,346.
Indonesian veteran Ilyassak, the halfway leader who was one shot behind Wisut after round three, carded a 72. The 46 year old from Aceh ended in sole possession of fifth place to be the leading local player.

The next event on the ASEAN PGA Tour is the US$60,000 Sabah Masters which will be played at Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club from November 3 to 6.

Wisut Takes Control In Palembang

Palembang, Indonesia, October 15: Wisut Artjanawat, the highly-rated Thai golfer who many believe has the ability to succeed at the highest level, took the third round lead in the US$75,000 Palembang Musi Championship today.

He carded a six-under-par 66 at Palembang Golf Club giving him an opportunity to win his third title on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

Wisut leads the tournament on 11-under-par 205 by one shot from overnight leader Ilyassak from Indonesia, who fired a 69.

Young Malaysian star Nicholas Fung carded a 65, the lowest round of the week, to move into sole possession of third place two shots behind the leader.

“I have been struggling with my short game for a while but the greens here are a little slower which I prefer. I am holing a lot of putts,” said Wisut.

The 29 year old carded a bogey free round and twice made three birdies in a row from the seventh and later from the 15th.

Wisut is a proven winner having won the Thailand PGA Championship last year and in 2008 he won the Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam and the Mercedes-Benz Masters Philippines on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

He turned professional in 2006 after enjoying a distinguished amateur career which saw him claim the individual and team titles in the 2005 Putra Cup.

In an attempt to take his golf to the next level he re-invented his approach to the game this year.

“I have been working very hard with a mental and physical coach in Thailand. I am improving my fitness so that I don’t get tired so easily. I was getting tired after three rounds and did not have enough energy to finish off a tournament properly. Also I am working on my level of concentration so that I can stay focused and not clutter my mind with too many thoughts,” added the Thai.

Veteran Ilyassak, aged 46, led for most of the day but found water on the par four 17th and made a double bogey.

“That was a careless mistake which I am disappointed about. However, I feel a bit more comfortable going into the final round one shot off the lead,” said the strapping golfer for Aceh.

A five time winner on the local Indonesian circuit he is looking for his first victory on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

Fung, who recently claimed back to back titles on the Malaysian Tour, catapulted himself into contention with a brilliant round.

He dropped a shot on the third but then nailed eight birdies despite nursing an upset tummy.

“I have been practicing really hard and it showed today as I hit a lot of shots close and had many short birdies putts. This week has been a bit of a struggle as I have not been feeling that well. I played in the Korea Open last week on OneAsia and I think going from the food there to the food here has upset my stomach. I am feeling better now and looking forward to the final round,” said the 21 year old.

Thailand’s Tanatchan Puaktes returned a 70 and is four back.

Indonesia’s top golfer Rory Hie fired a 71 and is six behind Wisut to give him an outside chance of claiming the title.

Ilyassak Takes Halfway Lead

Palembang, Indonesia, October 14: Veteran Ilyassak loving the local layout but battling from an overdose of coffee moved into the lead in the US$75,000 Palembang Musi Championship today.

He shot a three-under-par 69 at Palembang Golf Club for a two round total of seven-under-par 137.

The 46 year old Indonesian leads by one stroke from compatriot Jamel Ondo.

Ondo shot a 66 in the fifth event of the season on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat and Tanutchan Puaktes are a stroke further behind after carding rounds of 68 and 71 respectively.

Ilyassak comes from Aceh where he says his local course is very similar to Palembang.

“The speed of the greens and the course conditions are just like Aceh. I am very comfortable playing here. I am a bit tired though as I have not slept well the past two nights. I have been drinking too much coffee. Last night was really bad as the waiter at the hotel mistakenly gave me an extra strong cup. I couldn’t sleep and felt hungry in the middle of the night,” said Ilyassak.

He has won five times on the local Indonesian circuit during a long career. A win this week would be his most significant so far and judging by the way he played today he has every chance.

The Indonesian fired an eagle, four birdies, a double bogey and a bogey to take command.

“The front nine was very good but I made some mistakes on the back nine. I teed up my ball too high on the par-three 11th and hit a bad tee shot into trouble. I took a double there,” added Ilyassak.

Ondo has been a professional for 10 years and is looking for his first victory.

He played like a winner on the outward half making birdies on one, three, four, seven, eight and nine. A level par back nine ensured he was very much in the hunt.

“My iron play was great and I hit it close on a lot of holes. All my birdie putts where short. I am a teaching professional at Royale Jakarta Golf Club so I love having the opportunity to play in tournaments on the ASEAN PGA Tour,” said Ondo.

Indonesia’s top golfer Rory Hie carded a 67 and is just three behind the leader along with first round leader Somsak Khaoprathum from Thailand who fired 74.

Malaysian Nicholas Fung is five back after coming in with a 73.

The halfway cut was made at six over par meaning that Singaporean amateur Choo Tze Huang surprisingly missed the cut.

Choo, the region’s top amateur having won the individual and team titles in last month’s Putra Cup, shot rounds of 72 and 79 to miss by one. A quadruple bogey eight on the 18th, which was his ninth hole of the day, did most of the damage.

Somsak Shines In Palembang

Palembang, Indonesia, October 13: Thailand’s Somsak Khaoprathum experienced the thrill of leading a tournament for the first time in his fledgling career today when he fired a six-under-par 66 on the opening day of the US$75,000 Palembang Musi Championship.

A brilliant five-under-par back nine, which included four birdies in a row from the 14th, at Palembang Golf Club saw him shine in the fifth event of the season on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

Ilyassak, the elder statesman of Indonesian golf, rolled back the years and carded a 68 to tie for second place with Thailand’s Tanutchan Puaktes.

Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung and Anthony Fernando from the Philippines are a stroke further behind.

“It is my best round as a professional. I felt very relaxed and holed a lot of putts from about 20 feet. I wasn’t thinking about my score too much and so when I finished it was only then I realized that I was leading,” said Somsak.

The 24 year old from Bangkok made the turn in one under before bursting into life on the homeward stretch.

“I have mainly been playing on the local Tour in Thailand this year so it feels great to be able to play overseas for a change. It is exciting and definitely lifted my game today,” added Somsak, who turned professional in 2008.

In contrast to the young Thai leader, Ilyassak has over two decades of experience of playing in tournaments around the region. He has long been one of the most recognizable golfers from his country with his thick distinctive moustache and tall frame.

“This is an old style golf course which I am very used to playing. It gives me a bit of an advantage although it will difficult to keep this going against all these young players,” said the man from Aceh who has won multiple titles in Indonesia.

Ilyassak made five birdies and dropped one stroke.

Fung, one of the pre-tournament favourites having won back to back events on the PGM Tour of Malaysia last month was content with his opening salvo.

“It is a tricky course that requires a sharp short game. It is not a very long course but requires a lot of concentration. It was a good start for me,” said Fung, who claimed last year/s Mercedes-Benz Masters Vietnam on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

Singapore amateur Choo Tze Huang, winner of the individual and team titles in last month’s Putra Cup, made a solid start after carding a 72 and lies joint 10th with 14 other players.

Indonesia’s Rory Hie, the country’s top golfer, came in with a 73.

The former US college star is another of the favourties this week having finished second this year in the Indonesia PGA Championship and Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta, both of which are on OneAsia.

Bali World Cup Charity Golf Tournament 2011

New Kuta Golf has hosted the “Bali World Cup Charity Golf Tournament 2011” on Saturday, 30 July 2011, participated in by 160 players while more than 250 people attended the Gala Dinner.

The tournament was organized in association with the ROLF Foundation to raise funds for the needy of the Bukit and Southern Bali. The tournament was an Inter-Nation team event with each team comprising of 5 players. The Indonesian Team became the winner of the event.

Bali Junior Championship Cup Tournament Results

Back to where it all started

An exciting PGI Bali Junior Golf Tournament Series Championship Cup was held on Sunday 25th September at New Kuta Golf.

New Kuta Golf was where we started with the Series 1 tournament so it was a fitting end to a wonderful series of golf for the juniors in Bali. The support of New Kuta Golf for the juniors was once again turned on.

During the 5 Series which lead up to the Championship Cup the junior players played at all 5 courses in Bali.

At times home course knowledge proved to be an advantage but with many of the juniors experiencing the courses for the very first time they still manage to showed just how quickly they adapted to the new surroundings.

Once again 48 junior players displayed great ethics by arriving early, following the rules and also having fun.

The Boys Championship Cup was decided by an exciting playoff with Ananda Pidada and Andrew Mulyadi tied for first place.

The two players headed back to hole 9 deciding on who would go first by an unconventional “dum dum sut” (rock paper scissors). Ananda tees off first followed by Andrew whose ball looks like its out of bounds so he hits a provisional ball. Ananda who is known to have the coolest head on the course putted for the win. In his victory speech he said “it was his lucky day today!”

There was a nerve racking wait for the mixed championship players Meva Schmit and Jose Massana as a computer glitch forced the tournament officials to recheck the scores manually.

Both player told to prepare for a possible playoff. Ten year old Meva, obviously exhausted, was emotional but within minutes one of the officials came out to declare Meva the winner therefore avoiding the playoff.

The girls champion Yeyen Safitri wins with an amazing score of 77.

The divisional tournament players all did well with a few players playing in their very first tournament.

The inaugural series championship cup also saw the presentation of The Kang Dharma Wijaya Players of the Year Trophies, awarded to players who met the criteria set by the Committee. These players were Andrew Mulyadi, Aldo Ryanata and Jose Massana.

Third Places For Indonesian Juniors At 100Plus Malaysian Junior Open

Kuala Lumpur, Sept 15 -- Malaysia's Muhammad Azry Asyraf Noor Azam and Dottie Ardina of the Philippines claimed the 2011 100Plus Malaysian Junior Open titles today at the Saujana Golf and Country Club in Subang.

Although the final round was once again disrupted by dark clouds and rain, Muhammad Azry, 17, kept his cool to sink a birdie on the second hole play-off at the par-5 18th hole to clinch his first Malaysian Junior Open crown.

After completing the final round, Muhammad Azry and fellow Malaysian Low Khai Jei were tied with identical scores of four-over 220.

"I didn't expect to win this tournament but felt good coming into the final round. I was quite nervous when playing in the play-off and when we were tied after the first play-off hole, I told myself to keep calm in the second.

"I managed to control the game and win it," said the form four student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Hi-Tech Kulim in Kedah who hopes to be selected for the SEA Games.

With their strong performances at this year's competition, both Muhammad Azry and Khai Jei claimed the Boy's Under-16 title while overnight leader, Jeremiah Kim, shared third place with Indonesia's Joshua Andrew Wirawan on six-over-par 222 total.

Her team mate and defending champion, Sarah Ababa shared third placing with Malaysia's Loy Hee Ying with score of 11-over 227.

In the team (mixed) event the title went to India, with a score 301, 17 strokes ahead of the second placed Indonesian team of Kow Eiki and Putri Aisyah Aman (318). Third place went to Taiwan with a score of 332.

2 Indonesian Juniors Challenge For Lead At 100Plus Malaysian Junior Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia’s Joshua Andrew Wirawan shot a par 72 to take second place in the Boy’s Under-18 and overall categories of the 100Plus Malaysian Junior Open held at the Saujana Golf and Country Club in Subang, yesterday. He's three shots behind Malaysia's Jeremiah Kim, who shot an impressive three-under-par 69, and another three strokes ahead of another Indonesian player, Kow Eiki.

In the Girl’s category, Dottie Ardina of the Philippines fired a sizzling five-under-par 67 to lead the Girl’s Under-18 and overall competitions.

In the team event, India led with a score of 150 points while Malaysia and Indonesia are in second and third position with 152 and 158 points respectively.

Malaysia make up the largest contingent at this year’s competition with 72 participants, followed by Singapore (18), Indonesia (9), Philippines (6), India (5), Bangladesh (3), Taiwan (3), Sri Lanka (2), South Korea (2), Mynmar (2), England (1) and Japan (1).

Indonesia Third In Putra Cup And Lion City Cup

Indonesia finished third at the 51st Putra Cup at the Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club in Hong Kong yesterday, with George Gandranata finishing third in the individual ranking with a total of 284.

The title went to Singapore (846), whose four members will take part in the SEA Games in Indonesia in November. Hong Kong (851) and Indonesia (860) came in second and third respectively.

In the individual event, the winner was Tze Huang Choo of Singapore who carded a 281, two shots ahead of Shinichi Mizuno of Hong Kong. George Gandranata and Shun Yat Hak of Hong Kong were joint third.

Established in 1961, the Putra Cup is one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the region.

Equaling the men's national performance in the Putra Cup, the Indonesian junior team also placed third at the 5th Lion City Cup held simultaneously.

The Thai team of Chanachok Dejpiratanamongkol, Pariwat Pinsawat, Somprat Rattanasuwan and Aussarassakorn Voramate posted a 869 total to beat Malaysia (873) and Indonesia (888). The individual event was won by Malaysian Low Khai Jei (286), where Jordan Irawan had the best individual score for the Indonesians with a joined fifth place and a total tally of 293.

The Thai women also triumphed in the 3rd Santi Cup on 852, one stroke better than the Philippines led by Dottie Ardina. Malaysia was a distant third with a score of 877, with Indonesia placed sixth and last with a score of 916. Thailand's Pinrat Loomboonruang (276) claimed the individual crown, while best individual result for Indonesia was a 14th place 300 by Juriah.

Indian Golfers New Target For Indonesia Tourism Board

With improvement in air connectivity between India and Indonesia looking likely, Indonesia Tourism has decided to enhance their engagement in the India market in the coming months. According to Sapta Nirwandar, Director General - Tourism Marketing, Indonesia Tourism, the tourism board has decided to more than double their investments in the Indian market to attract more visitors to Indonesia.

When asked about their marketing strategies, Nirwandar said that they will be employing a “horizontal approach” rather than a “vertical approach.” He said that the promotional activities will be targeted at their target segments such as Wedding, Adventure Sports, Golf and Honeymooners, rather than big budget advertising in international media.

“India is one of the top 10 source markets for Indonesia, but the inbound figures are still low compared to the potential of the market,” stated Nirwandar. About 142,000 Indians visited Indonesia in 2010. The tourism board has set a target of 160,000 arrivals from India this year.

He said that the new air agreement signed between the two countries enables Indian and Indonesian carriers to ply to four cities in each other’s countries. He hoped for some airline companies to come forward and offer increased connectivity between the two countries. He said that there were talks going on between Indonesia’s national carrier Garuda and Jet Airways for some code sharing partnerships for destinations like Jakarta and Bali. Although there is no direct connectivity, Nirwandar said that Thai Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Air Asia, etc. offer good connectivity to some of the important Indonesian cities.

Speaking about Indonesia’s tourism offerings, the Director General said that Indonesia has a lot of attractions beyond Jakarta and Bali, the two most popular and visited destinations by Indian travelers. “Indonesia is truly a value for money destination for Indian travelers not just because of its unique nature, culture, food and hospitable people, but also the strong exchange value of the Indian Rupee compared to Indonesian Rupiah,” he added.

Singapore Charges To Lead In Putra Cup

The third day of the South East Asia Amateur Golf Team Championship, held at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong, saw the men loose a place and the ladies and juniors maintain their position.
In the Putra Cup the Indonesian men's team saw the Singaporean team jump from 4th to 1st as a result of a strong team performance, when all players shot rounds in the 60's, for a total team score of 630, before yesterday leader Hong Kong (632) and now third place Indonesia (641).
The Indonesian ladies are still in 6th place in the Santi Cup, scoring 226 for the day for a combined total of 683. First and second place are unchanged for Philippines (629) and Thailand (632), with Malaysia (654) now overtaking Hong Kong (659) for third.
The Lion City Cup didn't see any changes in the top, with Thailand still in the lead with a total team score of 649, followed by Malaysia (653). The Indonesian junior team is still in 3rd place, with a team score of 662.
Tomorrow will be the last day of the championship, when both the Indonesian men's and junior's team will have to score good to maintain their position, as the differences with the numbers four are very small.

Indonesia In Second Place After 2 Rounds In Putra Cup

After leading the board after the first day, the Indonesian men's team of Rinaldi Adiyandono (70 73), Ian Andrew (71 74), George Gandranata (69 71) and Suprapto (72 71) dropped to a preliminary second place with a team score of 425 after the second round of the Putra Cup at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong, SAR. A stellar performance of Shun Yat Hak, who shot 65 on the second day, propelled the Hong Kong team into the lead with a one shot lead total of 424. Third place for the moment goes to Malaysia, who were at 4th after the first round, but managed to overtake Singapore with a team score of 427.
In the Santi Cup the Indonesian ladies team was less fortunate, where after 2 rounds they are in 6th and last place with a team score of 457. The lead here is for the team from the Philippines with a total of 416, followed by Thailand (418) and Hong Kong (430) in third place.
The midway lead in the Lion City Cup is for Thailand with 505, followed by Malaysia with 517 and joint third place for Singapore and Indonesia junior team with 518.

PGI Sends 12 Players To Hong Kong

The Executive Board of the Indonesian Golf Association has sent twelve golfers to the 51st South East Asia Amateur Golf Team Championship (51st Putra Cup, 5th Lion City Cup and 3rd Santi Cup), that is being held at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, Hong Kong from 6 to 9 September 2011.

These golfers are Suprapto, Rinaldi Adiyandono, Ian Andrew and George Gandranata who will play for the Putra Cup, Agnes Retno Sudjasmin, Juriah, Inez and Nanda Winet Princess Soraya who will play for the Santi Cup, and Jordan Irawan, Aditya Novanto, Elki Kow and Adrian Halimi, who will play for the Lion Cup.

JGCC Member Beats Age With Jagorawi New Course Record 63

Jagorawi Golf & Country Club member Mr. Dukki Kim, Director at SAMSUNG Electronics Indonesia, shot an amazing course record of 63 on the New Course on Saturday, August 6th, 2011.

Hereunder follows a hole-by-hole description of the round, played from the White Tees, in the words of Mr. Dukki Kim:

On the Front Nine I shot 32 with 1 “Eagle”, 4 “Birdies” and 2 “Bogeys”.

Hole 1, I made an “Eagle” after my second shot landed at the greens edge, I managed to hole out my third 8 iron.
Hole 2, I made a “Birdie” after sinking 10 putt.
Hole 3, I made an atrocious “Bogey” when I duffed my 125 meter approach shot into the water hazard, after taking a penalty, I managed to knock my 4th shot to 3 feet and sank the putt.
Hole 4, was a comfortable “Par” after a 2 putt from 20 feet.
Hole 5, was another silly “Bogey” when I duffed my 54 degree pitching wedge from the green edge and had 2 putts.
Hole 6, finally saw some form come back with a solid “Birdie” after rolling in an 8 footer.
Hole 7, “Birdie” after sinking a 20 foot snake of a putt.
Hole 8, “Birdie” time has arrived! Knocked my approach dead and sank the 4 foot putt.
Hole 9: let a 15 foot putt slip past to make a “Par”.

On the Back Nine I shot 31 with 5 “Birdies”.

Hole 10, this “Birdie” came easy with a great 3rd shot approach and rolled in a 5 foot putt.
Hole 11, nerves are starting to twitch and I had to pinch myself to check that this wasn’t a dream with another “Birdie” sinking a 10 footer.
Hole 12, I made an easy “Par” with 2 putts from 20 feet.
Hole 13, I made another smooth “Par” after leaving my second shot short, I hit my 60 degree wedge from 10 yards out to 6 feet from the pin and sank the putt.
Hole 14, two solid shots coming up the hill, sinking a simple 6 footer for “Birdie”.
Hole 15, everyone knows this hole can be “make-or break” so a “Par” with 2 putts from 20 feet was a relief.
Hole 16, Closing hole jitters? No way! I played this tough hole with 3 solid shots and sank a 5 foot putt for “Birdie”.
Hole 17, Clubhouse in sight, I knew I couldn’t let myself down, I was happy to 2 putt from 15 feet for “Par”.
Hole 18, This is a tough closing hole, I managed to make “Birdie” after pushing my approach 5 yards right of the green and then chipping in with a cool flop shot from my 60 degree wedge.

I ended the round with a 63 which comprised of 1 “Eagle”, 9 “Birdies”, 6 “Pars and 2 “Bogeys”. I suppose that I will never play this good again, but mostly I am happy to say this broke my life best score from 67 which I made 28 years ago and tied just 3 weeks ago, I had a personal most birdies in one round, and most of all became an “age shooter” at 64 (my target was 73).

Congratulations go to Mr. Dukki Kim on such a magnificent round of golf and reaching a true golfers lifetime goal of becoming an "age shooter". The great Sam Snead holds the PGA Tour record, and he was already 67 before becoming one, so this is truly a great achievement.

Bali Junior Golf Championship Cup

Bali August 19th 2011 - Before the Bali Junior Golf Community (BJGC) was first founded in late 2010, I asked why are there so few children playing golf in Bali? Depending on who I spoke to I would receive a different range of answers: not many kids like to play, too expensive, too hot for the children ; so after loitering at the some of the courses here in Bali ( which I would most likely be arrested for doing this in a developed country) I began to approach some adult golfers whom I knew had children, the coaches, the kids themselves and found that there in fact there were some children who played.
I think I totaled about 12 names after the first week. Having two children myself I know what a great social network and grapevine they have so I asked my husband Agoes for his support and started to think if we could put some well run tournaments/programs together the kids would find us and the word would spread.

At the time PGI in Bali had no program or structure in place for the kids that I was aware of and it seemed like it was the same four or five juniors I would see at the course or at the driving range.
It was very difficult to get any information from PGI Headquaters Jakarta, whose website leaves a lot to be desired and who obviously are struggling with their own issues. Calls never returned, emails not answered so I knew I was on my own.
Luckily for me my husband had some good contacts as and so we launched the Bali Junior Golf Community Tournament 5 Series & Championship Cup with support from his old school friend Eddy Panca who also was on the PGI Bali Board and Yuda Putra.

Owning an IT company came in really handy so Agoes set up the website, Facebook site as well as the other online systems which we would require to help us run the membership database and tournaments.

As far as I knew about the junior golf in Bali really had no history and the 5 courses on the island had never worked together to grow and support the juniors as one. So I went knocking on the doors of the General Managers of all five courses- Was it easy? - no - Did I get their co-operation? - you bet! Did I ever feel like giving up? - you bet! Did I give up? - never! Did I have the support of the parents - you bet I did! I networked away calling on my clients, peers, friends and family and other parents who had kids who played golf - some who thought I had gone crazy - let you in on a little secret here I DONT PLAY GOLF!

BJGC's aim was to grow the number of children taking up golf in Bali and to promote sound honest play and good judgment based on international tournament standards for juniors. We wanted to provide a positive experience for all concerned and to allow our juniors to grow as a player and a person and of course to have a fun. Did we succeed – You make up your own mind up…..just read on.

Fast forward to August 2011 and Bali Junior Golf's 5th Series is to be held at Bali Handara Koisaido Country Club. We had our biggest field of players - 50 juniors that would be starting - now remember those early numbers of juniors just over a year ago 4, 5,12.

Many juniors and their parents drove up the hill from the south and stayed the weekend. Practice day there was a TaylorMade demo organized by the Energizer Bunny a.k.a. Mr Mark Isley the new General Manager of Bali Handara Kosiado Country Club (BHKCC).
One of the junior parents and recreational golfer Benny Raj who runs Bali Catering Company organized the amazing BBQ & Bonfire for Saturday night, where the junior golf community came together like never before – remember it’s all about the kids and supporting them. Mark and his great team ran the Putting and Chipping competition. Prizes were donated by Golf House, BHKCC and Ruci Golf. The guys that run Ruci Sport & Golf who are aged in their twenties are great ambassadors for junior golfers as well as good role models. Unfortunately - some of the better junior golfers who are on the national team were no-where to be seen!

Sunday morning - tournament day, juniors turned up collected their player badges just as the fog was rolling up the 18th fairway which was a stunning site, they were briefed by Mr Eddy Panca our Rules Official and off they went to face tee placements and pins positions which would prove a challenge during the day. Once again the field's pace of play was great and the juniors did not hold up any of the regular members and guests who were out there playing. Fifty juniors out there playing golf on a spectacular course showing good sportsmanship and discipline and most importantly having fun.

Another successful day - you bet! We now have 77 juniors on our database – so we hope PGI will now take note. These juniors do not expect goodie bags and lucky door prizes they just want to play golf and have fun in a safe and nurturing environment with a people who care.

The 2011 Championship Cup will be held back at New Kuta Golf on Sunday 25th September where we will crown our inaugural Boys Champion (A & B) , Girls Champion (A & B) and Mixed Champion (C & D) as well as player of the series.

Jakarta’s Golf, Rowing Venues Remain Concerns

With 22 sports to host at the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in November, Jakarta is still struggling to find funding to renovate the Jagorawi golf course, as well as to complete work on the rowing venue at Cipule Lake in Karawang, West Java.

“We have proposed the renovation fund for the golf venue, which costs up to Rp 2 billion (US$234,000), to Youth and Sports Ministry, but we haven’t received it yet,” Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Commitee (INASOC) deputy for venues Djoko Pramono said Wednesday.

The renovation would cover maintenance of the golf course and toilet facilities, among other things, he added.

“As for rowing, the reconstruction of the lake has begun,” said Djoko, adding that the cost of the work on the lake had reached Rp 4.5 billion.

Organizers have also started repairing Rawamangun Velodrome, after repair work delays at the venue sparked concern from Indonesian national team, Djoko said. “As far as I know, the workers are currently fixing the broken track,” he added.

Asked about the renovation and construction projects of some venues in Jakarta, the city’s youth and sports office head Ratiyono said that the velodrome would be ready for use by the end of this month.

“As for Cipule Lake, the rowing venue will possibly be finished and ready for practice early next month,” he added.

Ratiyono said work on the golf venue had initially been delayed because it had not been budgeted.

“But I’ve sent a letter to the Youth and Sports Ministry, in the hopes that it will allocate some funds for the venue from the state budget,” said Ratiyono, adding that the renovations would be minor. There is great pressure on the Games organizers to finish the venues as soon as possible, as they will also be used for warm-up events before the Games, especially by local athletes.

Despite major delays afflicting construction work on some of the venues, especially in the other host city of Palembang in South Sumatera, Indonesia has so far organized warm-up events for 12 sports — including basketball at Britama Arena sports mall in North Jakarta, and volleyball at Sriwijaya sports hall in Palembang.

N. Zealand, Singapore, Korea Qualify For World Cup Golf

PETALING JAYA, Malaysia (AFP) — New Zealand powered to a superb closing round of 67 on Saturday to qualify for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup, with Singapore and Korea also securing their place alongside the elite.

The Kiwi pairing of Michael Hendry and Gareth Paddison capped a perfect day by holing out from a greenside bunker to birdie the last at the Seri Selangor Golf Club to tie Singapore's 13-under-par total of 271.

Singapore's Lam Chih-Bing and Mardan Mamat shot 72 on the last day but they conceded to New Zealand without playing any extra holes as both had qualified for the event proper at Hainan Island in China between November 24-27.

Hendry and Paddison were both dressed in black, New Zealand's national colours, and beamed with pride at the prospect of joining the world's top golfers at the 28-nation biennial event.

"We worked really hard on our games... It is great to represent our country in the World Cup and hopefully go on to make the country proud," said Hendry.

Paddison, a left-hander, who sank the bunker shot at the 18th, was delighted to win the qualifying after a final round of five birdies, one eagle and three bogeys.

"We combined very well. It has been a great week and we came here with the goal to qualify and it is a fantastic feeling. Somehow being left handed with a right handed partner worked for us on this course," said Paddison.

Lam and Mardan, who have teamed up together in four previous World Cups, said they were delighted at the prospect of doing so again.

"We came here with the goal of finishing in the top three and we did just that," said Lam, who also played in the British Open this year.

"It didn't matter if we finished in first, second or third, just as long as we qualified for the World Cup. That's why we conceded in the play-off," he added.

Korea's Kim Hyung-Sung and Park Sung-Joon claimed the third and final ticket for the finals after closest rivals Gaganjeet Bhullar and Anirban Lahiri of India scored a disastrous eight on the par four 18th for a final round of 80.

The Indonesian pair of Burhan Bora and Hardjito finished 27 strokes behind the leaders at 11th place, closing with a disappointing 82 in the final round.

Tiger Confirmed For 2011 Aussie Open

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell today announced Tiger Woods as the latest big name heading to Sydney in November to play the Australian Open to begin one of the greatest years ever for Australian golf.

Woods will join defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, Presidents Cup captains Greg Norman and Fred Couples, world number 13 Bubba Watson and world number 7 Dustin Johnson to contest the time-honoured Stonehaven Cup.

The Open will take place from 10-13 November at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney, immediately preceding the President’s Cup.

Mr O’Farrell said Sydney is synonymous with the Australian Open, hosting the inaugural championship in 1904, on 35 occasions overall and continuously since 2006.

“The Open’s tradition, heritage and history is reflected in its honour roll of some of world golf’s greatest players and all Australia’s leading golfers regard winning the Stonehaven Cup as a career highlight.

“Tiger Woods’ participation is great news for the Open and comes as a result of a lot of hard work to secure the coveted lead-in dates to the President’s Cup.”

Mr O’Farrell said strengthening major events like the Australian Open forms a key part of the NSW Government’s strategy to rebuild the NSW economy.

“We are focused on having the strongest and most compelling events calendar in the country and sport obviously plays a key role in that calendar.

“We have created Destination NSW as a new statutory authority to market and promote NSW as a tourism and major events destination.

“With Tiger in town the eyes of the world will again be on Australia’s global events city.

“We caught the Shark and now we have snared the Tiger to give him the chance to join the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Greg Norman, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer and Peter Thomson on the Open’s honour roll,” he said.

Tiger Woods today confirmed he was very much looking forward to playing in the Australian Open in Sydney.

“I’m very excited to be competing in the Australian Open,” said Tiger Woods. “I haven’t played in the tournament since 1996, and I’m anxious to return. I have a great affinity for playing golf in Australia and I’m looking forward to competing against an outstanding field at The Lakes in Sydney.”

Golf Australia CEO Stephen Pitt said this announcement is another important part of the strategy to build the Open as a pre-eminent event on the burgeoning OneAsia tour.

“OneAsia continues to grow each year with the 2011 schedule involving tournaments in China, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia – including the Australian Open.

“OneAsia is an extremely important development for Australian golf and additionally it helps our strategic partnership with Destination NSW to grow the Australian Open and it aligns particularly well with NSW’s key trade and tourism markets,” Mr Pitt said.

Golf Australia is delighted with the progression of the Australian Open during its partnership with the NSW Government and is very excited about how the 2011 Australian Open is shaping up.

“There is no doubt whatsoever, it will be one of the best fields ever assembled for an Australian Open Championship and there are still major player announcements to be made over the coming weeks,” Mr Pitt said.

Thaworn Triumphs After Titanic Battle In Indonesia Open

Jakarta, July 17: Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant proved indomitable once again as he recorded a brilliant victory in the US$1 million Indonesia Open presented Enjoy Jakarta.

The veteran 44-year-old prevailed by one stroke from Indonesia’s rising star Rory Hie, defending champion Michael Hendry from New Zealand, and Korean Choi Jin-ho after a gripping finish.

Thaworn lifted his first title on OneAsia after making a battling par on the 18th at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course.

The Thai star had led by three at the start of the day and closed with a 73 while Hie shot 70, Hendry carded 71 and Choi a 69.

The victory also marked his second success in the event as he triumphed in 2005 and is the 15th big win of his illustrious career.

He led by one shot playing the final hole and a sudden-death play-off beckoned after his tee shot found an awkward lie on the edge of a bunker on the par four closing hole.

He had to play that shot with his feet in the trap and he splashed it out to 10 yards short of the green. Handling the pressure with the experience of a true champion he chipped to a foot to secure the crucial par.

Hendry, who was paired with Thaworn, had a 35 foot birdie putt to draw level but he just missed.

Moments earlier playing in the group ahead, Hie missed a similar length par putt to stay level with Thaworn. Hie had found a water hazard off the tee and had to take a penalty drop.

“I am very happy to win even though I didn’t play well. It was an uphill battle. The past two days have been a struggle. After I bogeyed nine and 11 I didn’t think I could do it. I felt I must make that up and down on the last as I was too tired for a play-off. I had to work a lot harder to win this Indonesia Open compared with the last time I won it,” said Thaworn, who finished with a four round aggregate of 13-under-par 275.

Thaworn and Hie tied for the lead on 13 under at the turn and Hie was in control for much of the back nine before he dropped shots on 15 and 18.

“There is no secret to my success. I just work very hard on my game and make sure I look after myself and eat the right food. Ever since I was trying to get into the national amateur team I have been this way. It’s like a nine to five job although my day normally starts a lot earlier,” added Thaworn.

Thaworn won a cheque for US$180,000 while second place was worth US$72,500.

Hie was bidding to become only the second Indonesian to win the title after Kasiadi in 1989.

The 22 year old also finished second behind Australia’s Andre Stolz in the Indonesia PGA Championship in March, which was the season-opening event on OneAsia.

“It hurts, of course, being this close to winning, but sometimes, you have to fall before rising to the top. I have learned my lesson and I will work harder to win the tournament on my home soil. I was unlucky on hole 18. The ball should have stopped before the hazard, but it didn’t. Actually, I made a good recovery by hitting it onto the green. Overall, I played well today, though I was confused on some holes. My putter also didn't work well. I really hope it's just a matter of time before winning a tournament,” said Hie.

Hendry won this event by seven shots at the same venue last year and produced a fine defence.

He caught Thaworn on 14 under after a fast start with three birdies in the first five holes but then proceeded to self-destruct. He went in the water off the tee on the par-three seventh for a double bogey.

The Kiwi then found water again with his second shot on the par-four ninth and made a seven. However, he then rallied superbly and played the back in three under.

“Complete rollercoaster of a round. I made some costly mistakes on a few holes. It could have been so different,” said Henry.

Unheralded Choi made birdies on 15, 16 and 17 to come close to snatching a surprise win.

Australian Kim Felton was also in the hunt but dropped shots on the closing holes to end with a 72 and finish three behind the winner in a tie with compatriot Ashley Hall, Korean Han Chang-won and Thailand’s Chawalit Plaphol.

OneAsia moves from one prestigious national Open to another next when it heads to the US$1 million Thailand Open.

To be held from August 11 to 14, the tournament will be played at Suwan Golf and Country Club, just outside Bangkok.

Thaworn will headline a magnificent line-up of players from Thailand while also playing is former US Open champion Michael Campbell from New Zealand and Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama.

OneAsia boasts a total of 13 tournaments on its schedule in 2011 and includes the national Opens of Indonesia, Thailand, China, Korea and Australia.

Steel Minded Thaworn On Threshold Of Second Victory In Indonesia Open

Jakarta, July 16: Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant flashed some of the brilliance that has seen him win a record number of titles in the region to take the third round lead today in the US$1 million Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta.

The veteran, who won this event in 2005, fired a six-under-par 66 to open up a three shot lead over compatriot Chawalit Plaphol and defending champion Michael Hendry from New Zealand.

Chawalit shot 65 while Hendry came in with 69 at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course.

It was an excellent day for golfers from Thailand as Wisut Artjanwat also moved into contention with a 67 to lie a stroke further back. He is tied with Indonesia’s Rory Hie, Kim Felton from Australia, and Korean Han Chang-won.

Thaworn has a three round total of 14-under-par 202 in the seventh event of the season on OneAsia.

“It was a great result but it was hard work at times because I had some trouble with my driver. I was hitting it fine on the driving range but on the front nine I started hooking it. I didn’t know what to do so I corrected it by working on a slight cut for the rest of the round. I am mentally exhausted,” said Thaworn.

He made an eagle, five birdies and dropped just one shot. Despite some shaky tee shots he toured the front nine in five-under-par 31. He then took a firm grip of the tournament with birdies on 11 and 13 but made his only bogey on 15.

“I was quite lucky today but that’s golf. I have a great chance to win. It would mean a lot to me to win on OneAsia. My goal is to win on as many Tours as possible,” added Thaworn, who is 44.

Thaworn won this event in 2005 at Cengkareng Golf Club, during a season when he tasted victory four times en route to becoming Asia’s number one.

“The weather here is very similar to Thailand so I always enjoy playing here and tend to play well,” he said.

He also made an impression on the leader board in last year’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta finishing in a tie for fifth place at the same venue.

The Thai star has an incredible haul of 14 tournament victories in the region.

Chawalit shot the lowest round of the day and the joint lowest round of the week so far. He didn’t drop a shot and made five birdies going out and two on the return side.

The 36 year old burst back to prominence after a period in the doldrums with victory in the Queen’s Cup on home soil last month, his first big win since lifting the Bangkok Airways Open in 2006.

“I knew I could shoot a low round on this course. I made some mistakes on the first two days but today I had no problems. I have a very good chance tomorrow. I just need to play my own game,” said Chawalit.

The Thai star first signaled his return to peak form last year when he claimed two titles on the ASEAN PGA Tour.

Hendry took the title by seven shots in 2010 but for much of the day it looked like the 31 year old’s chances were slipping away. He played the front nine in one over while others were storming up the leader board making birdie after birdie.

However, he rallied over the latter stages and birdied the 13th and then made birdie on the last three holes.

“Yesterday my putting was really poor and today my driving was really bad. I have quite a bit of work to do on the range but I still have a great chance,” said Hendry.

Hie is bidding to become only the second Indonesian to win his national Open after former caddie Kasiadi triumphed in 1989.

The 22 year old dropped his only shot of the day on the par-four 18th but is in a very strong position.

“I couldn’t ask for a lot more. There is everything to play for tomorrow. It’s very close with a lot of players in with a chance. It is exactly where I want to be,” said Hie.

He finished second in the Indonesian PGA Championship in March, which was the season opening event on OneAsia, and will no doubt use that experience to prevail tomorrow.

Han, the 19 year old who won this year’s OneAsia Qualifying School, made a disappointing double bogey on the last.

He said: “I couldn’t concentrate today. I hit a bad shot and I lost my tempo and confidence after that. I will just try to calm down for tomorrow’s game. I am not expecting to win. I will go to the driving range later, fix my tempo, and just try to do my best tomorrow.”

China’s Liang Wenchong, the reigning OneAsia Order of Merit champion, fired a 71. He finished runner-up here last year and is five under for the tournament nine behind the leader.

Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat carded the same score and is tied with Liang.

Han Holds Halfway Lead In Indonesia Open

Jakarta, July 15: Teen titan Han Chang-won from Korea took the halfway lead in the US$1 million Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta today on OneAsia.

The 19 year old star in the making fired a five-under-par 67 at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course.

He moved to nine under par for the tournament and a one stroke lead over defending champion Michael Hendry from New Zealand, Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, Hideto Tanihara from Japan and Australian Michael Wright.

Hendry was in control for much of the day before a poor stretch on the back nine saw him return a 71 while Thaworn, who won this event in 2005, shot a 68.

Tanihara, a nine-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour Organization, came in with a 69 and Wright returned a 67.

Indonesia’s top golfer Rory Hie birdied the final three holes to card a 70 and lies three shots off the lead along with Australians Kim Felton and Rohan Blizard.

Han is one of the most exciting young prospects on OneAsia having claimed the Qualifying School by six strokes in January in China.

“I had a chance to win the Volvo China Open earlier in the year but I played badly on Sunday. This weekend I hope I can learn from that experience and try and handle the pressure much better. I am playing well and feel I can shoot some low scores in the last two rounds,” said Han

He made six birdies and one bogey to put himself in a strong position to claim the US$180,000 winners’ cheque.

“I holed a lot of putts today as I got a feel for the greens. If I can maintain that feeling I won’t be far away come Sunday,” added Han.

The Korean claimed the 2009 Asian Amateur Championship and part of his reward for winning was a prized spot in the field at last year’s US Masters and although he missed the cut at Augusta his rounds of 79 and 76 saw him tie with former champion Sandy Lyle of Scotland.

The youngster made his professional tournament debut at Indonesia PGA Championship, the season opening event on OneAsia in March, where he finished tied for 17th place.

Thaworn won the Indonesia Open by five strokes in 2005 at Cengkareng Golf Club, during a season when he tasted victory four times en route to becoming Asia’s number one.

“I feel I can do well here. It’s not all about hitting it long off the tee. You need to control the ball and work it around the course which suits me. I am in a good position heading into the weekend and want to push on from here,” said Thaworn.

He also made an impression on the leader board in last year’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta finishing in a tie for fifth place at the same venue.

The Thai star has an incredible haul of 14 tournament victories in the region and at the age of 44 he is still knocking on the door for more trophies.

He also played in the Indonesia PGA Championship and finished in sole possession of fifth position.

First round leader Hendry, winner of this event by seven strokes last year, birdied the 12th and eagled the par-five 13th to take the lead on 10 under.

However, unexpectedly he proceeded to bogey the next three holes.

“I couldn’t get a feel for the greens and was a bit unsettled at times. I need to work on that. I am still very much in the hunt and hopefully that will be my only bad run of holes this week,” said Hendry.

Hie, the 22 year old who was second in the Indonesia PGA Championship, went out in three-over-par 38 and looked to be out of the running until his inspired finish.

“I never gave up. I always thought I could make some birdies and get back on track. It means a lot to me and I am passionate about playing well this week in my national Open. Anything can happen from here on in,” said the Indonesian, who is trying to become only the second Indonesian to win the national Open since Kasiadi in 1989.

The halfway cut was made at even par with a total of seven Indonesians making the cut.

Indonesia’s Andik Mauludin is also bidding for honours. He came in with a 69 and is four off the lead. The 29 year old is a multiple winner as an amateur and professional in Indonesia.

Jordan Irawan, a 15 year old Indonesian amateur, fired a 71 and is a stroke further behind Mauludin. The youngster, whose caddie is also 15, won the Enjoy Jakarta World Junior Golf Championship at the same venue in June.

Jakarta, July 14: New Zealand’s Michael Hendry showed that he fully intends to hold onto the Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta trophy by taking the first round lead at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course.

He won the title by seven shots last year at the same venue with a final round seven-under-par 65 and began his defense today with the same score.

He recorded a brilliant bogey free round in the seventh event of the season on OneAsia.

Japanese star Hideto Tanihara and Australians David Bransdon, Steve Collins and Leigh McKechnie, who made a hole in one on 15, all shot 67 in the US$1 million tournament.

Hendry said: “I don’t think the course has changed that much since last year so I have a bit of an advantage over the rest of the field having won here last time. I set a goal for myself this week to make sure I am in contention come Sunday and I have made a great start. I am just playing it as another tournament and not putting any pressure on myself.”

The 31-year-old started his round on the back nine and made birdies on 11, 14 and 18. On his homeward stretch he birdied three, four, six and seven.

“Perhaps I could have driven the ball a little better today but I played really well and missed a bunch of short putts that could have seen me shoot much lower,” he added.

He has not tasted victory since winning in Indonesia last year but he has had a couple of opportunities to win and looks like being the man to beat this week.

Hendry won with a four round score of 19-under-par 269 last July.

Tanihara is a nine-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour Organization with his most recent victory coming in the 2010 Vana H Cup KBC Augusta.

The 32-year-old was in trouble off the tee on the final hole and made a bogey five to fall back into a tie for second.

“It was disappointing to finish like that as it was my only bogey but I played very well and feel I have a good chance this week. Tomorrow I will get to play in the morning when there should be less wind so I hope to make a move then,” said Tanihara.

There was plenty to cheer about for the local fans as the country’s top player Rory Hie carded a 68 to tie for sixth with Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, winner of this event in 2005, Koreans Han Chang-won and Han Min-kyu, Japan’s Takuya Taniguchi, and Australians Kim Felton and Rohan Blizard.

“It was not too bad. I am a little upset with my last hole, the ninth. It should have been a birdie. It was only a two metre putt, but I missed it. Obviously, I don’t want to disappoint the Indonesian fans so I am really focused this week,” said Hie.

The ultra-talented 22-year-old finished second in OneAsia’s season-opening Indonesia PGA Championship and has been enjoying a fine season.

His father normally caddies for him but this week he has a Malaysian caddie.

He said: “There is no technical or special reason for this. I’m responsible for all the decisions on the course. My caddie is only helping me with occasional advice. My dad is getting a bit old and I don’t want him to get too tired caddying for me.”

Malaysia’s Danny Chia came in with a 71 along with Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

China’s Liang Wenchong, the reigning OneAsia Order of Merit champion and runner up here last year, carded a 72.

Ireland’s Ryder Cup star Paul McGinley returned a 74.

Jakarta, July 13: New Zealand’s Michael Hendry is on the brink of discovering top form as he bids to defend his title at this week’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta.

He recorded a magnificent seven stroke victory over China’s Liang Wenchong last year at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course and although he has not triumphed since then he returns to the same venue full of hope.

“My game is not far away from coming together. It is very close to the point where every part of my game is working in unison. I am driving the ball really well and I feel the rest of my game is not far off,” said Hendry.

The 31-year-old’s win last year was the first big victory of his career and as well as the financial reward it gave him a huge confidence lift.

“It certainly was a breakthrough that has allowed me to play with a new level of confidence. The fact that I have not won since then doesn’t worry me. I have come close to winning a few times and I am sure there will be many more chances. I don’t feel nervous being here as defending champion. I am relaxed and in the right frame of mind,” added the Kiwi.

The Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta is the seventh event on OneAsia this year and boasts prize money of US$1 million.

An all-star line-up is competing including Liang, Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama, Irishman Paul McGinley, Danny Chia from Malaysia, Korea’s Han Chang-won, and Indonesian number one Rory Hie.

Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, Chawalit Plaphol and Kiradech Aphibarnrat are also playing.

Hendry relived last year’s victory while playing a practice round today.

He said: “On many of the holes I played the same shots as last year. The memories are very strong and should help me this week. At home recently I also watched some of the coverage last year as I have a copy and that has been fun.”

Hendry played with Liang in the final group last year and when the Chinese player was asked how he rated the New Zealander’s victory he joked: “I want to know if Michael will drive as long and straight this week and hole all the putts.”

The man from North Harbour started his sporting career in cricket. He played cricket for New Zealand’s under-19 cricket team and later represented Auckland before opting to focus on golf in his early 20s. He turned professional in 2004.

This week marks the first time that Maruyama has competed in Jakarta and the 42-year-old Japanese star is looking forward to the challenge.

“It feels great to be here. I am recovering from a calf injury I got after playing basketball with my son at home in February. I didn’t play for well over a month so I have gradually been working my way back,” said Maruyama.

The Japanese star, nicknamed the “Smiling’ Assassin”, has won three times on the US PGA Tour and has amassed 10 more titles globally, including the 2002 World Cup with Toshi Izawa in Mexico.

He made golf history when he triumphed at the Greater Milwaukee Open in 2001 becoming the first Japanese player to win a US PGA Tour event on the mainland (Isao Aoki captured the 1983 Hawaiian Open).

This week marks his second appearance on OneAsia as he competed in last year’s Luxehills Chengdu Open.

Hendry has been paired with Chawalit and Takuya Taniguchi from Japan in the first two rounds while Maruyama will play with Liang and Australian Kim Felton.

NZ Herald, 13 July 2011: Mike Hendry hopes familiar surrounds will work in his favour as he defends the Indonesian Open golf title this week.

The New Zealander posted a breakthrough victory in the same OneAsia Tour event 12 months ago and he would like nothing more than to hold on to the title.

Hendry propelled his name into the spotlight a year ago with an emphatic seven-stroke victory in the Open but has yet to replicate that sort of form in 2012.

He is presently 18th on the tour's moneylist with tournament income of US$49,495 ($63,917), well short of the US$273,707 banked by Korea's Kim Kyung-tae and behind two other New Zealanders in Michael Long, eighth with US$81,190, and Gareth Paddison, 12th with US$67,718.

Paddison will join Hendry in Jakarta for the first round on Thursday week but the Perth-based Long is elsewhere, holidaying with family in France.

Hendry said his victory in Indonesia last year had raised his own expectations.

"I am putting extra pressure on myself to perform," the 31-year-old said.

"I need to get some perspective and remember that I am playing as well as I was last year but it is different because I expect better results now.

"My results aren't that bad I am in the top 20 on the OneAsia order of merit. I have only missed one cut in the past three years so I can't complain too much."

Hendry has nothing but fond memories of his last visit to the Damai Indah Golf Club near Jakarta and said he felt no extra pressure as the defending champion.

"It is just another event and there is no more pressure than any other event. The only pressure I feel is from myself and meeting my expectations.

"I am happy to go back there and try to defend it but realistically we all know how hard it is to win a golf tournament and it is unrealistic to target one in particular."

Hie energized the country’s golf fans with second place behind Australia’s Andre Stolz in the Indonesia PGA Championship, the season-opening event on OneAsia.

The ultra-talented 22 year old led going into the final round before Stolz pipped him for the title by a stroke.

The rising star finished in a tie for ninth at the Negeri Sembilan Masters Invitational on Sunday on the ASEAN PGA Tour and is in confident frame of mind.

“I feel like I can hit all the fairways and greens in regulation. Of course it doesn’t always happen that way but at least that is how I feel which is a very positive sign. It has been a very good year so far. Much better than last year’s scenario when I struggled,” he added.

He faces a big challenge as the tournament has attracted a stellar field, including a posse of proven winners.

Defending champion Michael Hendry of New Zealand, OneAsia number one Liang Wenchong of China, Japanese legend Shigeki Maruyama, Irishman Paul McGinley, fresh from a top-15 finish in the Barclays Scottish Open, and multiple winner Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand are among the favourites.

The Thai duo of Chawalit Plaphol and Kiradech Aphibarnat, both winners in Asia this season, and leading Malaysian Danny Chia will also tee it up from July 14-17.

Hie knows that there is a lot of expectation for him to perform well in his home Open and he hopes to deliver a victory.

Jakarta, July 11: Top Thai duo Chawalit Plaphol and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, both winners this season, will bring their considerable talent to OneAsia for this week’s US$1 million Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta.

They join a strong field for the seventh tournament of the season on OneAsia at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course.

Defending champion Michael Hendry of New Zealand, OneAsia number one Liang Wenchong of China, Japanese legend Shigeki Maruyama, Irishman Paul McGinley and multiple winner Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand will challenge for the title from July 14-17.

Chawalit burst back to prominence after a period in the doldrums with victory in the Queen’s Cup on home soil last month, his first big win since lifting the Bangkok Airways Open in 2006.

“I am playing really well at the moment and I want to compete in as many tournaments as possible while my form is hot,” said the 36-year-old Chawalit, who possesses one of the sweetest swings in Asian golf.

“This will be the first time I have played a OneAsia event outside of Thailand and I know the competition will be tough.”

The big-htting Kiradech, dubbed “Asia’s John Daly” because of his grip-it-and-rip-it style, underlined his huge potential with victory in the SAIL Open in India earlier this year.

Kiradech showed immense promise in the amateur ranks and was the World Junior champion in both 2003 and 2004.

He turned professional at the E-San Open in 2007 and immediately made his mark with a final round 61 to finish sixth.

Kiradech, 21, shot another 61 on his way to victory in the 2009 Singha Pattaya Open on the ASEAN PGA Tour to underscore his ability to shoot low scores.

Hendry propelled his name into the spotlight last year with an emphatic seven-stroke victory in the Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta.

The 30-year-old from North Harbour started the day with a one-stroke lead and fired a flawless final round seven-under-par 65 at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course to finish comfortably ahead of second-placed Liang.

Adding colour to his winning moment, several of Hendry’s fellow professionals, including Josh Carmichael and Brendan Stuart, performed the Haka – the traditional Maori dance made famous by the All Blacks rugby team – as he walked off the 18th green.

Liang has won a record three titles on OneAsia and topped the moneylist last year with winnings of US$560,736. The Chinese number one showed he can hold his own with the world’s best by finishing eighth in last year’s US PGA Championship, thanks largely to a course record 64 in the third round at Whistling Straits.

The evergreen Thaworn, one of Asia’s most decorated players with a dozen titles to his name, placed fifth in OneAsia’s season-opening Indonesia PGA Championship and is eying another high finish.

McGinley, the golfer whose name is synonymous with Ryder Cup glory, will be a popular addition to the tournament.

An Academic All-Big Ten and U-M Athletic Achievement recipient, Sitompul started eight of the nine events in 2010-11. She ended her second season dropping nearly four strokes from her prior best, posting a 78.61 per-round average this season. She recorded career bests in virtually every statistical category, including single-round tally (73), 54-hole tournament total (225) and 72-hole tournament total (319). She helped the Wolverines to nine top-10 finishes and an NCAA Central regional selection -- the program's ninth postseason appearance (team and individual) in the last 11 years.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average is 3.50, and student-athletes must have competed in at least 66 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

New Zealander Hendry, Chinese Liang To Rematch In Indonesia Open

Jakarta, 30 June 2011: New Zealand's Michael Hendry will return to defend his title at the Indonesia Open golf tournament next month along with China's Liang Wenchong, who finished runner up last year on his way to winning the OneAsia Order of Merit title, a press statement said here on Thursday.

The 1 million U.S. dollar-OneAsia event will tee-off at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course (PIK) from July 14 to 17.

It is the seventh leg of the season on OneAsia and will also feature Japanese legend Shigeki Maruyama, Irishman Paul McGinley, Europe's Ryder Cup hero, and Thai star Thaworn Wiratchant, winner of this event in 2005.

Hendry propelled his name into the spotlight with an emphatic seven shot victory in 2010 at PIK.

The man from North Harbour started the day with a one stroke lead and fired a flawless final round seven-under-par 65 to finish comfortably ahead of Liang.

Unheralded Hendry killed off the challenge of his nearest competitors with a brilliant run of seven birdies on six, eight, nine, 11, 12, 13 and 14.

He finished with a four-round aggregate of 19-under-par 269 and earned a check for 180,000 dollars.

Liang was the leader at the halfway mark by two shots last year before Hendry took control.

However, it was another fine week for Liang that saw him receive a check for 102,000 dollars.

He lifted last year's OneAsia Order of Merit crown, with earnings of 560,736 dollars, thanks to victories in the Luxehills Chengdu Open in China and the Thailand Open.

Jakarta, June 22: Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant and Prayad Marksaeng, two of the regions’ finest players, will star in next month’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta.

The US$1 million OneAsia event tees-off at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course from July 14 to 17.

Thaworn won the Indonesia Open by five strokes in 2005 at Cengkareng Golf Club, during a season when he tasted victory four times en route to becoming Asia’s number one.

He also made an impression on the leader board in last year’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta finishing in a tie for fifth place.

The Thai star has an incredible haul of 14 tournament victories in the region and at the age of 44 he is still knocking on the door for more trophies.

Thaworn competed in OneAsia’s season opening Indonesia PGA Championship and finished in sole possession of fifth position.

He currently sits in 20th position on the 2011 OneAsia Order of Merit.

The smooth-swinging Prayad has lifted 10 major trophies in the region and enjoyed a magnificent year in 2008 with three victories on the Japan Tour resulting in a third place finish on the Money List.

He triumphed in the Dunlop Phoenix, the Mizuno Open and the Mitsubishi Diamond Cup in that brilliant 2008 season.

Prayad has struggled with injuries for a couple of years and embarked on a new fitness regimen at the start of the year to prepare himself for the 2011 campaign.

Jakarta, June 15: The Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta will once again draw a high calibre field of winners next month including Japanese legend Shigeki Maruyama and Irishman Paul McGinley, Europe’s Ryder Cup hero.

The US$1 million tournament tees-off at Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course from July 14 to 17 and is the seventh stop on OneAsia in 2011.

Maruyama, one of the most popular figures in world golf, will be making his debut appearance in the Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta.

The Japanese star, nicknamed the “Smiling’ Assassin”, has won three times on the US PGA Tour and has amassed 10 more titles globally, including the 2002 World Cup with Toshi Izawa in Mexico.

He has also featured for the International team in the Presidents Cup and starred in the 1998 tournament with a 5-0 record.

Maruyama made golf history when he triumphed at the Greater Milwaukee Open in 2001 becoming the first Japanese player to win a US PGA Tour event on the mainland (Isao Aoki captured the 1983 Hawaiian Open).

His other wins in the United States came at the 2002 Verizon Byron Nelson Classic and the following year’s Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.

McGinley, the golfer whose name is synonymous with Ryder Cup glory, will be a popular addition to the tournament.

He is most famous for holing the winning putt for the European team in the 2002 Ryder Cup. It was the start of a remarkable stretch for the Dubliner as he was part of the winning team in 2004 and 2006.

Last season he was one of the non-playing vice captains and played an important role in marshalling Europe to another victory.

McGinley has triumphed four times on The European Tour with his best season coming in 2005 when he claimed the Volvo Masters and finished third on the Order of Merit.

The Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta will also mark McGinley’s maiden appearance on OneAsia, which boasts 13 events in 2011. Maruyama competed in last year’s Luxehills Chengdu Open.

The tournament became part of OneAsia for the first time last year, when victory went to New Zealand’s Michael Hendry.
